Well, for completed stories, I would suggest the Silmarillion, which chronicles the First and Second Ages. There are no completed stories for the Fourth Age of the Sun. If you are still interested after the Silmarillion there are the following books (In Order):
Unfinished Tales
Book of Lost Tales One
Book of Lost Tales Two
The Lays of Beleriand
The Shaping of Middle-Earth
The Lost Road
The Return of the Shadow
The Treason of Isengard
The War of the Ring
Sauron Defeated
Morgoth's Ring
The War of the Jewels
Peoples of Middle-Earth
Adventures of Tom Bombadil

Also Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Inklings and Biography of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Non Middle-Earth:
Farmer Giles of Ham
Leaf By Niggle
Sir Gwain and the Green Knight

Not by J.R.R.T.:
Complete Guide to Middle-Earth by Robert Foster
The Tolkien Family Album

"Complete Guide to Middle-Earth by Robert Foster" Is that generally considered better (more complete?) than "The Tolkien Companion" by J. E.A. Tyler?

For a complete (and I mean complete) bibliography of prof. Tolkiens writings, I recommend A Chronological Bibliography of the Writings of J.R.R. Tolkien (http://www.forodrim.org/arda/tbchron.html) by by Åke Bertenstam.

I don't have the guide you mentioned, so I can't tell you. I will say this though. The Foster guide is miles better than the David Day ones.

Do not even mention the evil book of lies ;)

Roverrandom is fun, though it's not about Middle Earth.

I agree with your opinion of the David Day books. They do have one redeeming feature though, which is most of the artwork. I almost never sell my books on JRRT, but I tossed one of the David Day's in the for sale box last month.

MM has mentioned Day before. Who is he?? What did he write and why is it so terrible?
