Hey Eowyn. Just saw your thread. I can't answer your question directly, but somehow it is related to the thread and therefore I'll start:
I don't like any other fantasy books (or movies).

Shannara is probably my favorite besides LOTR.
Have you read Song in the Silence and The Lesser Kindred by Elizabeth Kerner. They are about dragons and I loved them.

This really belongs in the Fantasy and Sci-Fi Forum, I expect. :)
Next to Tolkien, my favorite is Edding's Belgariad and Malloreon.

Next to Tolkien, I'd say Brian Jacques.

I tried one of David Eddings's once and didn't finish reading it, and didn't like it much. That doesn't make very much sense though, because I do really like Terry Brooks and most of the other authors people that like Eddings applaud. So maybe I'll give one of his books a try again.
The ones I really like are The Wheel of Time :D. If you haven't read them, Gwaimir, you should read the first to find out if you are interested. Because luckily for you, if you do like them, there's a lot of them to read. The first one is called "Eye of the World."

I started to read them; read the first, part of the second, then it was banned by the parents (cos of "channeling"); I'm sure mom wouldn't mind now, but I just don't get into it.

Well, then, sorry mr. Gwaimir. i didn't realize that. But this was in the General Literature thread, isn't it? So it could go there too. D'ya see what i mean?

Unleashed, Broken Sword, hardly anything, but I love James Tonks, (he's my cousin...)

I haven't recommended them to my younger siblings yet because of the violence, sex and language. Those would be understandable reasons for a younger person not to read them. Very understandable. But the channeling I think is a wrong reason to cut someone off from it, for it isn't worse than most other fantasy.

I'm with GW. Edding's is my favorite after Tolkien.

I see what you mean, but I disagree. :) By your logic, then absolutely anything could go in the General Messages board. Not that I'm saying that it's necessarily wrong, but that's the way it's run here, I believe. :)

I like most fantasy. I have read the Shadow War trilogy (Written by George Lucas and Chris Claremont), the Dark Elf trilogy (Written by R.A. Salvatore), and the Everworld series(Written by K.A. Applegate) which are short but cool. Oh, and Harry Potter :D More of a kids book, but I enjoy it.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman:
The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass
The Dark Is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper:
Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark Is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree
My favorite Arthurian book is The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Great book, but very long (876 pages).
Right now, I'm reading an animal-fantasy book called The Sight by David Clement-Davies. It's very interesting and well written.

I haven't read any of those last two books, but the "His Dark Materials" trilogy and "The Dark is Rising" series I really enjoyed a lot. My favorite of "The Dark is Rising" series is Greenwitch, and my second to favorite "The Grey King." The one I had the most trouble with actually was book 2. In book 2, there was wonderful description in the first chapter. Really great tension, anticipation and fear build-up, but then after that I found the book quite a bit less understandable. It's my sister's favorite of those though, so maybe I just have to reread it. I did enjoy it, just not as much as the others.

Actually I enjoyed The Dark Is Rising more than the others that I read. I think I liked it more because it seemed darker, and had more wizardry in it. Not the first time I read it, but later, when I read it again is whenI understood it. It's a lot more understandable on the second time.

I've tried the Prydain chronicles, but they felt too childish or something to me for some reason... I stopped reading in the middle of the second book.
