View Full Version : Fantasy Writer's Forum Petition:

Gwaimir Windgem
03-19-2003, 11:53 PM
Hail, and well met! To all of the Entmooters who have an interest in original fantasy writing. The suggestion has been posed that we petition the Administrators for a forum on Entmoot designed for people to post stories, a forum dedicated to fantasy writing. If you are in favour of such a forum, please post your name below. :) I will edit this post to include the names of those who sign the petition. They have one for Harry Potter and RP's, why not writing! :D

Sincerely,
Gwaimir Windgem

The Petition:
Dear administrators and moderators of our beloved Entmoot;
Due to the opening of a particular thread, it has become apparent that many of the people of Entmoot have an interest in writing works of fantasy. The thought has been put forth that possibly a forum designated for discussion of fantasy writing and the sharing of fantasy works and ideas, and especially the constructive critiquing thereof, may be a good addition to this online community which so many call home. We, the undersigned, would greatly appreciate it if you kindly consider the creation of such a forum.

Sincerely,
Gwaimir Windgem

You can put my name on it. However, I think that we should agree upon a certain number of people having had their signature there before we let it fly. Perhaps we should have at least ten people interested or something before we feel free to send it. After we ten people have signed in we could still have it linger for a while, collecting more support, but I think we should have a minimum number in favor before we feel free to release it.

Gwaimir Windgem

Yes, that sounds like a good idea. But I really have no idea what number would be good, so ten is fine with me. :)

I'm not a signatory, but I'd just like to post here and let you know that your proposal is being considered by the moderators at present.

However, what are your thoughts on a Writer's forum that is not necessarily limited to Fantasy? Is it absolutely necessary that this specifically be a Fantasy Writer's Forum? That's just a question of clarification I have personally.

We welcome your feedback.

Sounds good to me; count me in. Anything supporting writing is good by me.

Gwaimir Windgem
03-20-2003, 07:41 PM
Naturally, it wouldn't be restricted to fantasy, though I would certainly think it would be more fantasy oriented.

I honestly don't think there's enough interest here to warrant a whole forum. But good luck! :)

However, what are your thoughts on a Writer's forum that is not necessarily limited to Fantasy?

That's an even better idea- even more people can participate, and we could discuss writing techniques and exercises too.

I think in the forum people could post short stories, plot ideas, or discuss their writing techniques. It needn't be limited to fantasy writing. None of the short stories I've written so far are fantasy, actually, except one. And I don't think I'll post it either, though I might reconsider eventually :). It's a comedy romance, so I might be embarrassed :D.

So, it looks like we're only one person away from our minimum number already :D. Looking good :).

Yup! :) :D

Gwaimir Windgem

Though I don't think it really matters, as the mods and admins are already debating the matter.

Starr Polish

Put my name there, but perhaps it would be easier to push if it were a general writing forum.

Gwaimir Windgem
03-22-2003, 02:58 AM
Your name is added. :)

And I agree, 'twould be best to alter it to a general writing forum.

ArwenEvenstar
03-22-2003, 02:17 PM
a general forum would be a lot better then just strictly fantasy

Lief Erikson
03-22-2003, 05:35 PM
We're all in agreement on that point :).

elvendrummer87
03-24-2003, 07:32 PM
general writing would prbably get it through faster; people could post poems and short stories and everything. and i think there are enough people interested in that kinda thing; how many supporters would be "enough",do you think? i'd say we have plenty.

Lief Erikson
03-27-2003, 11:08 AM
We have ten people here, and we haven't really advertised. If I posted about it on the RPG forum, where there are lots of people trying to become better writers, there'd be a chance more people would want to get involved. And probably most of the people involved will be posting short stories and poems, and critiquing or applauding each others. (Gets a dreamy expression) Ah, that'd be nice :).

I haven't heard anything from the moderators for a while. Have they discarded our request?

elvendrummer87
03-27-2003, 01:44 PM
hey that's a good idea! never thought of that. advertising... i'm thinking a big banner draped across the forum home... j/k lol :D

edit: the history major in me just can't help pointing out that this is my 1066th post, and I'd like to take a moment to dedicate it to William the Conqueror. ;)

I urge you guys not to openly advertise the idea on other forums yet. If we create this forum, we will be putting up board-wide announcements regarding the change. If you really feel a need to get some more people in the RPG forum and such involved in this, please do it by PM.

I'm sorry if I sounded impatient; I was just thinking out loud. Carry on with your considering :).

Linaewen

If it's not too late, could you put my name down as well?
Will it include poetry (like your Weavers of Legend site) as well?
I like poetry: can't write it, but i appreciate it!

BTW, Gwaimir, I'm not happy with the fact that noone voted for the Silm in your Tolkien poll. Or that guests can't vote.

Gwaimir Windgem
03-28-2003, 11:22 AM
Certainly could. :)

Hmm? I could have sworn I'd voted for it! Silly me. :(

Indeed, I have no doubt it would. :)

Ironparrot, I'm sorry, but I'm getting impatient again. I wouldn't be if I could see progress being made, but I'm not on the end of discussion that you are. Are there any new developments among mods or admins in discussion of the Writer's Forum?

Gwaimir Windgem
04-05-2003, 04:31 PM
I've been wondering the same thing. Are you sure you didn't decide not to, and forget to tell me?

crickhollow
04-05-2003, 05:12 PM
the idea got shelved while we were plotting our Grand Scheme for April 1st. The topic has now been picked up again, and is still under discussion.

Lief Erikson

Thanks for the update :).

Aralyn
04-06-2003, 05:54 PM
You can put my name too. Did you tell people in the thread, "Do you do any fantasy writing?" I know you want it to be more than fantasy but if those people like to write they might sign the petition.

Gwaimir Windgem
04-06-2003, 06:12 PM
The idea came from there, and as it's in the same forum, I expect they can find it. :)

Actually, I'd rather a specialised one, but that might be viewed as rather selfish... Not to mention, a general Writer's forum would no doubt go over better.:)

TheWhiteRider

Ninquelote

You didn't think I wouldn't join in, didja? I have my Canayen story you like so much.

Agalayth
04-07-2003, 07:23 PM
Hehe, me too.

Don't forget, the Weavers of Legend is also a great place to write your fantasy stories, poems, or anything like that. We also have a private forum so only registered members can get in. There isn't much in it though.

Gwaimir Windgem
04-07-2003, 07:51 PM
Unfortunately not. :( That's why I started this petition, wot with the great number of 'Mooters.

TheWhiteRider, Ninquelote, Agalayth, will add. :)

I've received confirmation from numerous sources that the Writer's Forum has been approved. Hurrah! :D Though, of course, it will take a little while to do, and I haven't received information about specifics regarding time...but it's approved! :D

Lief Erikson
04-20-2003, 12:56 AM
Hurrah! (Lief claps Gwaimir on the back in joy :D. He pours the champagne, only to remember a moment later that he doesn't like it particularly much, and takes an Easter candy bar instead) Hurrah!

(Takes cymbals and starts clanging them, wild with joy)

Mmm, of course, I already knew that that happened from your email ;). However, doesn't prevent me from being joyful (Even in public :o)on this one occasion! :D:D:D:cool:

Now I just have to get busy and work on that story I'm writing. (Frowns intently) I'm writing a comedy story for myself and my sister (Who reads my stories and loves them :D), and I'm planning to post it in the new forum. I'm eight pages into it now, and I suspect it'll be around thirty pages long by its end. I don't want to post it piece by piece much, for I'm afraid doing that might eliminate my motivation to finish it. That'll be a fun one to post, when finished.

This new forum is probably the thing I've gotten most excited about in all my time on Entmoot (Even though I've put a lot more thought into certain other things).

Linaewen
04-20-2003, 07:47 AM
Fantastic! Yeah! Looking forward to reading all your stories (I won't posting any stories seeing as I don't write any)

I think posting it piece by piece may INCREASE your motivation. Every time you post, there will be messages going 'Great!' 'LOL!' and 'Add more, Lief, more!'.

Such as the thread I started but never post in. It is far too complex for me to even pretend to know what's going on in it.

What? :( Surely you can write one or two before then. They don't have to be perfect for me to enjoy them :). Are you just writing novels now, then, or are you not actively doing any fiction writing?

Glad you'll enjoy reading my stories though, anyway :).

Yes, you and Aralyn are right. I will post it in pieces- I just hope my motivation doesn't die because I'm already getting feedback. I'll work at it though; probably I'll write some more of it today.

Congratulations, all. You've just participated in what is perhaps the first successful petition I've ever seen in my entire life. :p

I'm going to be leaving this thread open for a little while longer, so you can celebrate and revel in revelry or whatever, and after that I will likely be shunting it over to the Archives.

You could post thoughts on story writing, or character development, or essays and writing assignments, or especially fiction writing. How long have you been writing fiction?

Coney

Hmm, I haven't done any serious writing for several months (Uni being it's usual awkward self, demanding essay's, research etc :( ) but I'll defo be viewing this forum with interest.:)

Well done ladies and gentlemoots..........it goes to show, if ya keep chipping at the admin block yer'll eventually crack it :D ;)

The story I've posted so far I wrote about two years ago. Around the time Starr Polish wrote the two stories she's posted; I'll post the date on my soon, probably.

Alas, we couldn't find any common ground. The question was what we thought of good and evil. Some people didn't think that good and evil didn't exist, so we had to retreat to the basis of their theories. That's where the argument has been circulating; myself arguing against genetics being responsible for everything and Insidious Rex arguing that genetics is responsible for everything.

My first writing works were pretty pathetic. I've been looking for them actually, just for the purpose of laughing at them :D. You can edit your stuff to make it less . . . cruddy, as you put it. Revision and editing is something I just about never did in the past.

Besides, as Gwaimir pointed out, it doesn't have to be wonderful to be enjoyable for people to read. I ALWAYS enjoy getting new people posting in my RPGs, and reading their posts, even if their writing ability hasn't had as long to develop as mine and some of the other RPGers has.

Yes, you should have seen my first two stories. Positively crap...:o But I, erhem, "eliminated the evidence"...;)

Of course, my family thought they were wonderful... I'm still using the BASIC basic storyline from the second, which I think may have been the same as the first, but I don't remember. Well, I'm GOING to, that is, but that story has been relegated to the end of a trilogy.

You shouldn't have done that. It's good to keep your old stories, if for no other reason than just to keep track of your progress. I was cleaning out some old papers the other day and found a story I had started on a few years ago. It was really bad, but it was good for me to see how far I had come- just in basic writing style.
