View Full Version : What Fingolfin looked like during his rage...

in riding to battle Morgoth. After reading about that some months ago, and growing to like Fingolfin the best of all Elf's, I realized just now that there is an image in my mind of what he could have looked liked. I remember playing this game called Warcraft III last year and there is a character who is an elvish priest with flaming eyes of blue, and so I wanted to post this to show everyone what that character looks like, to me I picture it being a copy of Fingolfin during his rage...
Here is the link to that image:

Dear lord, don't tell me you really think the princes of the Noldor were sword-ear elves???

I didn't say that it looked exactly like him, however the flaming eyes and the golden hair resemble him, plus the picture looks angry, thus during his rage...:D

You've played Warcraft 3 too? I'm not the only computer-gamer here then...
Sorry, off topic..

NoloFinwe's aura shown so brightly through from the spirt world during that ride that it made many of the enemy believe that it was one of the Valar.

O.O
That's impressive. But I thought it was Finwe NoloFinwe?
OT: I play a few computer games, but not many new ones. I mostly like 'classics', like LOMSE and Majesty. But I do know a few WC3 players; one of them I think has a temple to Blizzard in his room.

Anke Eissman's art has me convinced. Fingolfin had long, gold hair.

I think that long golden hair is the more common conception, but that in some volume (maybe Silmarillion, but probably one I haven't read yet) he is probably described as dark-haired.

I've been trying to find the passage all day and I can't but I remember reading that he had golden-hair.
Also, countless reknowned Tolkien Artists have painted Fingolfin with golden hair as well. If John Howe has him with Golden hair than the probability that he was written in with having golden hair is usually right on...

Since some of the VERY learned Tolkien scholars have said he had dark hair, I presume that this is the fact. We'll just have to wait till one of them can give us a quote. :)

BAH! I am so disappointed now, lol, I like thinking he has golden hair better. I think I found where my confusion was, this is a quote regarding Finarfin, his brother:
"Alone among the Noldorin princes he and his descendants had golden hair, derived from his mother Indis, who was a Vanyarin Elf."
Well anyway, back to the picture I posted, it's all in the eyes :D
I still could have sworn I read about Fingolfin with golden hair though :(

Anywho, I just want to go on record as saying that I object to the likening (to any great degree) of your typical Warcraft/DND/DragonLance/WHATEVER Elf to the Eldar of Middle-earth. They just ain't the same.

Yes, in the sense that all modern fantasy is. But do you think that the green Orcs are the same? The noble, shamanistic race, who was tricked and deceived into acting evil?
The elves of modern fantasy are, in many ways, much more like humans than the Eldar.

Finarfin and his decendents had the golden hair... says so in The Sil, I believe.
My brother is a D&D & RPG kinda guy (Akirapryde) and he has no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to Tolkien's Elves, Orcs, Men, Istari, etc. He is totally lost. It is fun b/c I feed him Quenya or Sindarin and he had no idea what it is (I've named him "Tithen Cabor"). I find it hard to believe that there are any similarities. But then again, I have no knowlege of D&D & RPG at all. Therefore, I am no expert on the subject in any way.

Could be, but for some reason when I think of Fingolfin's rage I think of that pic, mainly the eyes and the angered look on his face :p

I don't think anyone can really use any sort of picture for any character, because different characters look different in different people's minds.
People picture different qualities and associate them with different physical features... Quite odd, in my opinion...
Then again, I never pictured any sort of elf as a pixillized character. :p

I totally agree...I am illustrating some characters from the Sil, and I wouldn't expect everyone to think that Feanor, (my avatar) for instance, looks like how I picture him. What would have been really cool was if Tolkien drew pictures of his characters or places or things. That way everyone would know that this is what the charac ter, place, or thing, really looked like.

Fingolfin can't be dark haired, the only noldor with dark hair were the house of Finarfin.

I think you're a bit mixed up. I believe they had dark hair, except for the "golden house of Finarfin". :)

The only ROYAL Eldarin house (i.e of Finwean descent) to have fully golden hair in their house was the Finarfians. An example of non-Finarfians who had golden hair were, Glorfindel and Idril had golden hair as well.
I always thought Findis had Golden hair, for some reason.

I'm actually glad he didn't draw them, because now we can imagine them the way we want to with certain attributes from their descriptions and whatnot. It gives more depth to the stories in my opinion :D

From HoME 12, The Peoples of Middle Earth: from The Shibboleth of Fëanor
Fingolfin was his father's son, tall, dark, and proud, as were most of the Ñoldor...
*sigh* - I like Fingolfin, and I like dark hair!
From the Sil:from Of The Ruin of Beleriand
...and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar......Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old. The Orcs made no boast of that duel at the gate; neither do the Elves sing of it, for their sorrow is too deep. :(
