Gandalf's staff

Why does Gandalf get a new staff? I thought in the book he kept his old one.

In the first movie when Gandalf was on the tower after being tortured by Sarauman and he didnt have his staff how did he get it back???? At Rivendell when Frodo woke up their was good ole' Gandalf with his staff. How did that happen??? Does anyone know????

They are differnet staffs, look at the top of the staff, they are shaped different.
