I know this! I read it! But it is fromthe Silmarilion. Aule made dwarves, but Iluvator wanted to make his elves the first borns so Aule got upset, and started to pund on the dwarves to try and kill them. The just shrunk a bit, instead of dying, then Iluvator came down and told Aule to stop, and just make the dwarves sleep until he made his first borns come alive. The story is actually much longer, that is just a modified version, and it probab;y isn't even right.

Um...not quite right... ;)

Actually they were made by Aule. And he didn't actually pound them with his hammer; he took up his hammer to crush them, but they cowered before them, something they would not have done except that Iluvatar gave his approval by giving them life.

They were short because Aule's memory of the Children was rather vague, and His Children were not as the Children of Iluvatar as a result.

AH, that sucks! And I thought that that was the one sence that I actually understood in the book. Well not any more. Oh well, it is bound to get easier as it goes on right?
