Ents are the oldest creatures in Middle Earth. They are tree-people that inhabit the Fangorn Forrest and their leader is Treebeard, the Ent who helped Merry and Pippin and destroyed Isengard. That's what happens when you mess with trees. (Saruman was cutting them down :( ) Hope this helps...read TTT to get more on how they fit into the story...then go see the movie.:) (They don't put in everything that the Ents do)

The ents are said to be tree herders . Does anyone here know what is meant with this? Do they just sit in the grass and watch the trees (which cannot move) all day?

The movies forum isn't really the place for this. I think most of us would suggest reading the chapter "Treebeard" from LotR. If you prefer, do a search of the LotR books forum, or perhaps the Middle Earth forum, using the word "ents." You'll find some info that way, too.
