He was born in 1894, I think, in South Africa, Blomfoentein. He died at 81 in 1973.

Actually I think it was Bloemfontein which is, now that I think of it, a perfect place for the creator of Middle-earth to be born. In Dutch the name means 'Flowerfountain'. Very poethic. :)

I'll take your word for it. Still I think it's a pretty name even if the actual place is somewhat less so.

Well, it's a better name than Medicine Hat....

I don't know. But I sure as hell would love to! "Where do you live?" "Medicine hat."

One of my favorite highway signs in southern Saskatchewan shows three arrows:
straight ahead to Swift Current
Turn left to Medicine Hat
Turn right to Moose Jaw

The other one is for Forget Saskatchewan- which the locals hasten to inform you is pronounced 'forjay'

Well, not to promote this going off topic or anything, my Grandpa, a professional photographer and travelling enthusiast, took a picture of a road sign. I'll find it right now, as I just inherited a bunch of his photo albums.

Well, I don't have the original picture, but here's one taken by someone else:

It looks like this weathered, peeling sign has seen some bad days since my grandpa first photographed a clean, freshly pained one. But the undeniable logic remains. :D
