View Full Version : A different type of name game
Bullroarer

O.K.
This is hard to explain.
First you type in the meaning of the word and a different person has to tell the Elvish (Quenta or Sindarin) name of it. Then the get the honor of doing the next one.
Example:
Lover of the sea
-----------------------------------------------
Next post would say:
Earendil

Ok lets start

WHAT IS IT?!?!?!?!
anduin
07-17-2000, 02:59 AM
Bullroarer...Lord of the Trees can also be Aragorn....if you're curious. :)
ar(a)=high, noble, royal
g-augmentive prefix
orn=tree
The only thing I can come up for "Old Spider" is Ungoliar. Is that right?
Bullroarer
07-17-2000, 11:01 AM
I'm guessing Ungoliant, but that means Great Spider or Dark or whatever.
Ah what the heck.
UNGOLIANT!!!!!!!!!!
Eruve
07-17-2000, 04:26 PM
it's Ungoliant! Ungol=spider (as in Cirith Ungol; I know this is translated as Shelob's lair somewhere, but it really means "spider pass")
Actually, I just looked up the elements in Sil. and I realized "iant" means bridge, not old, as I had always thought! Looks like I got the elements of Iant Iaur mixed up a long time ago and it just stuck in my head that way! I'd always had it in my head that Ungoliant meant "old spider". Sorry about that; no wonder everyone was confused. As etherealunicorn would say, another brain fart. It seems to get gassier up there as I get older.
So what's next?

Eruve
07-18-2000, 12:08 PM
I think Angband was referred to as hell at one point and it's name is translated as iron prison or hell of iron in the index to Sil... So that's not so far off. I think FM was going for Utumno.
Sharp Glance is Maeglin.
Next: Blood stained
Fat middle

yep, i was referring to Udûn, that is the Sindarin word for Utumno. I know that somewhere it´s translated as "hell".
BTW, i think that Maeglin means also "son of the twilight", but i can be wrong.

nope, i don't know that. i'm just retaking this thread because of this sentence of Eruve Ungol=spider (as in Cirith Ungol; I know this is translated as Shelob's lair somewhere, but it really means "spider pass")
it has been bugging in my head from the time i read it. Today i've seen what i was looking for: Torech Ungol, that is Shelob's Lair. Cirith Ungol is as you said Pass of the Spider.
It is at the begining of the Shelob's Lair chapter :p
and now: Warrior...

I'll give you a hint. It's the personal name of a very minor character, one who brought some bad news to a woman.
