I noticed when watching TTT last night that when legolas (i think?) shouts "ladders!" in elvish at helms deep, gimli responds by saying "good!" in the common tongue.

However, throughout the first 2 movies I don't recall gimli ever speaking or responding to elvish before, and aragorn and legolas have several conversations in which gimli just stands and watches as though he doesn't know what they're saying.

Is he meant to understand elvish? I can't remember from the book whether he did or not

Well I think Dwarves do know a bit of Elvish, as the Elves and Dwarves had many dealings with trade and building things for one another when their main cities thrived. I would think that common everyday words such as "good" would be of the words that a dwarf would know in elvish....
