Some super important treasure: The Silmarrils, The Arkenstone, and the One Ring
Many Heroes: I'll let you guess this one ;)
Difficult Quest: Stop Melkor and all that, Get to dragon/kill dragon/kill army of goblins or ocrs, get to Mordor/throw One Ring into Mordor/escape Mordor
Multiple Adverseries: I gave up counting the ones in The Silmarrilion, trolls/goblins/spiders (of the giant variety)/Smaug the semi-invincible dragon/even more goblins, Sauron/Sauromon/the Balrog/an uncountable amount of monsters and orcs and trolls
Can you think of any more?

Yeah, and nearly every fantasy book after Tolkien copied these motifs as well!

Mulitple Adverseries: Wargs
Can't forget the wargs! They were the scariest thing I read in The Hobbit. I hated them because I have raised a few wolves, it was very hard to imagine them being nasty creatures.

Welcome Starwards! Nice name, do you have the haunting of the Land of Gift as well?
I found the spiders most frightening in The Hobbit, hands down. You've raised wolves??

You know my name! Pretty cool - Thanks. Yeah, I know It's not a hard one to find.
I know the land of gift is obviously Numenor, but what is with this haunting thing? I admit am a relatively new Tolkien fan and the Unfinished tales remain rather Unfinished to me.
I love Numenor however. It is very magical and mythical. It captured me with it's spirit and wisdom and power. The Numenoreans and the later descendants the Dunedain have been my biggest obsession. ~sob~ but I have found very little information on the Dunedain at all. Just brief lil tid bits here and there. Tis a shame ~ One could never have too much Numenor.
Yes Wolves. Actually they were mixed breed. I had a 50/50 wolf/husky mix whose name was Tosha. She was a beautiful very strong girl. The next was a big 80/20 wolf/malamute. His name was Nannook (no not lost boys). Sadly I lost him tragically to a car. My poor baby. He always smelled like fresh dirt, Oh how I loved to nuzzle my face in the thick fur of his neck. Our other boy was Zorro, more fondly know as Bubba. He was 96/4 wolf/malamute. He was a big black baby with white circles around his eyes. He is the sweetest dog to ever live.
The most wonderful thing about them was howling with them. It gives one a whole new perspective on the moon. You remember in the book how Tolkien mentions the Wargs having there own speech? That is what was really so freaky to me about the wargs. Wolves really do that talking thing Tolkien described in the Hobbit. Of course he gave all the animals a language of their own, the wargs just really poked out at me, because of my own experiences with them.

Hello Merry!
Wolves of Time? I've not read that, maybe I will check it out.
Dingoes - I think we relate Dingoes to Coyotes here. Not very pretty and not very friendly. Of course, there is alot of room to be wrong since I have never met either one.
My favorite wolf book, hands down, would have to be; The Silver Wolf by Alice Borchardt. It is a mess of politics, fantasy and shape shifters. It has an excellent plot and lots of intruiging characters.
Those are actually a few of my many reasons for loving LotR and the rest of Tolkiens works so much. They not only pull you in, but they make you stay there as well.
