The Nirnath Arnoediad, perhaps...and the story about Tuor and Gondolin and the story of Turin.

But my absolute favorite part is probably the one concerning Fëanor.

The Akallabêth would have to be my favorite part of the silmarillion. Everything about Númenórë has fascinated me.

When Fëanor defies the Valar, that was so cooooool. And also this part:
The Children of Ilúvatar have accomplished the impossible! Morgoth has been vanquished by his mortal foes. The Valar humbly acknowledge the courage, dignity, and power of the peoples they had forsaken and abandoned to the Power of the North. The Ñoldor and the Sons of Fëanor are forgiven and invited to return to the Blessed Land.
No wait, that was just a game. :(
My favorite part is also in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad
But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men lifted their voices in wonder and joy. For unsummoned and unlocked for Turgon had opened the leaguer of Gondolin, and was come with an army ten thousand strong, with bright mail and long swords and spears like a forest. Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The night is passing!'
I truly believed at that time that they would win the battle.:(

I'm another Numenorean freak, so the Akabelleth gets half my vote. The other goes to the history of Turin and his cursed life.

The Ainulindalë, because of the whole creation story, and that music, the command "Behold your Music!" and the wonder of the Valar, and the "gotcha" at the end of the chapter, that the vision was just that, and that upon entering Eä they had to labor to create what they had seen.

I might as well list every chapter! The book as a whole is my favorite part.

Upon first reading my favorite parts were Finrod's discovery and first meeting with men, Tears Unnumbered, the awakening of the elves, Fingolfin's battle with Morgoth, and Beleg's death... among other parts.

During my second reading The Flight of the Noldor had become another favorite. There are so many great moments in the book, I could not list them all, but there is something that I love and I never see anyone else mention:

As three great jewels they were in form. But not until the End, when Feanor shall return who perished ere the Sun was made, and sits now in the Halls of Awaiting and comes no more among his kin; not until the Sun passes and the Moon falls, shall it be known of what substance they were made.
I just love that about Feanor "who perished ere the Sun was made"... and not until "the Sun passes and the Moon falls"...

I would even go as far as saying that the loss of those words would be the greatest of losses if one were to apply the Sun and Moon idea told in Myth's Transformed.

Lúthien and Beren, I LOVED that part! I liked reading it after when knowing that Tolkien described himself, though he more resembled Bilbo, to be Beren, and his wife Lúthien.

I really liked the Ainulindalë as well.

I liked the whole book! Even though I didn't understand alot of it.

My favorite part? Chapters 1 through 24, the Ainulindale, Valaquenta, Akallabeth, Of The Rings Of Power And The Third Age. The Tables were good also, as were the Note on Pronunciation and Indices and Appendix. Oh gosh! How could I forget!! The Map... good also. Sheesh!! How could I forget the Forward and Preface... what was I thinking!!!

The houses of Hurin and Huor were awesome. And I like Huor's last lines to TUrgon during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad . . .

. . .This I say to you, lord, with the eyes of death: though we part here for ever, and I shall not look on your white walls again, from you and from me a new star shall arise. Farewell!

I loved it all- it's my favorite of all Tolkien's works so far as I've read. I love the Two Trees, the Ainulindale, Akallabeth, the tree of the Elves in the back of the book, and of course- Feanor. But there really is too much to mention...

In general I'd say anything having to do with Gondolin or the houses of Hurin and Huor. Also the story of Earendil and the ancestry of Elrond and Elros, which ties in here as well.

My favorite part is the Valaquenta, The Flight of the Noldor, and The Fall of Gondolin. I also like the Lay of Leithian. I had intended to skim it but I read the first 22 lines and I was fixated. I kept reading some lines over and over just because it sounded so good and the imagery was incredible. I lost myself in it.

My favourite part is the story of Turin, followed closely by Beren and Luthien - but I prefer the UT version, and the lay version (HoME 3) to the sil versions respectively.

Best bit in the Silmarillion would have to be Of the Sindar - it is perhaps the only chapter that really gives the reader a glimpse of what Beleriand was like before the return of the Noldor and and the arsing of the sun and moon.

It would have been nice to understand better what life must have been like for the Elves and Dwarves in ME during the long years "under the stars". In my opinion, it must have been very daunting.

In terms of a normal "story", I would say that the story of Turin would have to be my favourite. It is filled with tragedy and speaks of a flawed hero. It is also the one story that is treated with some depth (although still not nearly as enough) by Tolkien. Beren and Luthien is nice but it sort of whizzes past the reader and you don't really get to appreciate the many adventures and hardships that the couple must have gone through; it is doesn't really create a sense of actually "being there" (if that makes any sense). It lacks (to me at least) emotional impact.

I agree with everyone about Beren and Lúthien, but not about Fëanor. He was obsessive and withdrawn and he led others in doings of evil, this might make him more interesting but I guess I just like good characters.

I don't think anyone's said this, but I think my personal favorite is Melian and Thingol. I love the character of Melian, and even though Thingol didn't always come across as the best guy, you could still forgive his faults.

My favourite part and most saddest part of the book is when Fingolfin and Morgoth do single battle.
Unnumbered tears is good, so is The story of turin.
