Hey there fellow members of the Entmoot. Just out of curiousity, I was wondering which character is the best portrayed in the movies in terms of how the character was described in the book. My vote goes to either Andy Serkis as Gollum or Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins. Both were almost exactly how I pictured them.

Gullom and Bilbo where both played very well!

My vote goes for Gandalf...simply perfect. A close second goes to Boromir.

Aragorn and Legolas are also excellant, just not how I pictured them from the books.

in my opinion every character was portrayed to the exact picture in my mind.for me gimli and aragorn were best.

You saw Gimli as an idiot? No, not another BB....

Anyway, I thought Samwise was portrayed very well in the movie. He seemed to me to be the same, simple, loyal, devoted servant he was in the books.

I'd say Gandalf & Sam.....

i thought the sackville-bagginses were well-portrayed. in the EE. seriously though, i'd have to say samwise's character was perfectly replicated in the films, as was gollum/smeagol's.

and at the expense of sounding cheesy, i would say the character best portrayed on the big screen was middle earth.

I think they were all potrayes really really well. Everyone was exactly how I pictured them, except maybe Arwen and Gimli. I didn't picture Gimli so funny/stupid, and I pictured Arwen less warrior like. But other then that they were all great.

i agree, i think everyone in the movies were portrayed very well, except merry and pippin are a little...well...dumber, in the movies. but i think that adds a bit more humor to the films, its great nonetheless.

What about Aragorn? And of couse Faramir?

I thought Aragorn was good. But Faramir, what'd they do to him? I think they got him confused with Boromir. But all in all everyone was portrayed good I think.

Aragorn's "frightened of his lineage" bit was not in any of Tolkien's works, I believe. Other than all that, I thought he was good.

Sean Bean found real depth in Boromir.

I have recently found out that the guy who plays Faramir is a rugby league fan, so I'd just like to disown my previous thoughts and say what a fine job he did!

No, they didn't confuse 'em, PJ isn't as interested in preserving Lord of the Rings as he is in making money and turning into how he thinks it should have been. :)

I think that the wraiths were done well, and Butterbur at the Prancing Pony.

Bilbo! Some of the characters I liked more than in the book, (is that an improvement!? I think so) Boromir, Gandalf, Wormtounge, Eowyn, Legolas. Even though Merry, Pippen, and Gimli were given "comedy" that was out of character, the actors pleased me with their physical presence. I liked Galadriel, except the psyco bit. I loved Aragorn, though the character is slightly different, Viggo's hard work surpasses my bookish imagination! Frodo, didn't have as much depth as in the book, but I like the movie Frodo also. I find little not to like, but Bilbo is the best!

I think Arwen, Aragorn and Faramir were most closely portrayed...only joking. :D Not many characters were portrayed exactly the same as in the books. Even Gandalf, who acted a little silly and not at all like a maiar at times. I think Sam and Bilbo were perfect, I can't think of an instance where they acted differently from the books. In TTT Gollum acted a little wiser than I imagined him to be. Galadriel came across as slightly mean. Frodo acted a bit wimpy. Merry, Pippin and Gimli acted like idiots sometimes. It seemed like Saruman acts on behalf of Sauron (or maybe thats what they want in the movies). Treebeard was too hasty. Haldir wasn't portrayed well, unfortunately for him. ;)

Arwen, no doubt. I mean the "If you want him, come and claim him." line steals the show.

Hehe, that just made me think of Arwen as a quote "pervy hobbit fancier" unquote. Most amusing! :D

EW: "Please, please, there's enough of me for Elfmaidens and Ringwraith's alike!" ;)

i think Boromir was the best potrayed closely followed by Aragorn, Gandalf and Gimli... i cant comment now because it has been too long and they have grown on me now... Faramir was one of my least favorites in the book so i wasnt really dissapointed with David Wenham... but sean bean honestly what a legend

The challenge with this film is making the audience believe that the Ring has a hold over people's minds. Boromir's scene in the snow on Caradhras made the most significant contribution of all the characters in getting that across. Also, the look he gave Aragorn in the Council was worth the admission price on its own.

However, they were all great. Except Frodo (ducks) who needs a wider range facial expressions.

I thought that McKellen was better in TTT than in FOTR, and would've stolen the show if only they'd given him more screen time.

Sean Bean as Boromir was fantastic ;) . Yeah, he did subtle really well in a film where almost everything is screamed out to you. Anywho...after him, I think Sean Astin as Sam. Hes totally got the loving servant down, and the only reason I cant wait for Rotk is to see how they do Sam's scenes.

I can't choose... everyone was wonderfully casted and played their part expertly. I guess I might say Gollum, but Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir . . . all quite accurate and very compelling characters. Perhaps the only ones who didn't 'do it for me' would be Elrond, Arwen, Merry and Pip, and Aragorn to a lesser degree (I like his character in the movie too, but it's different from the book Aragorn).

---Characters who I thought were portrayed very close to the book (personality-wise, not story-wise):

1.) Gandalf - Best
2.) Sam
3.) Bilbo
3.) Eomer
4.) Eowyn
5.) Legolas
6.) Boromir
7.) Ringwraiths
8.) Gollum
9.) Saruman
10.) Wormtongue
11.) Butterbur
12.) Galadriel & Celeborn - Much closer in Extended Version
13.) Arwen (Even though they changed her storyline alot, I thought they captured Arwen's personality very well from the book.)

---Characters who deviated from the book but I still enjoyed:

1.) Aragorn - (Only minor gripe is that he is portrayed as being relunctant to be king in the film.)
2.) Frodo - (They captured his strength of will and heart but I think they made him less intelligent and heroic in the film.)
3.) Gimli - (They made him a bit stupid and more funny, but I still couldn't help laughing.)

---Characters who deviated from the book that I haven't fully made my mind on yet if I liked it or not!

1.) Faramir - (Except for being tempted by the ring, was well portrayed - I think he will follow book much closer in ROTK.)
2.) Theoden - They made him pessimestic and less heroic.
3.) Merry & Pippin - (They started out as comic relief and very different in first film (especially Merry), but they got closer to the book in TTT. I am waiting to see if continue to improve in ROTK.)
4.) Elrond - (I thought they made him a bit too angry and doubtful toward men.)

---These comments are not about the quality of acting which I though was pretty superb throughout.

i like the way wormtounge was portrayed. im not sure who the actor is but he did a good job in his evilness. yeah.

im looking forward to seeing the captain that comes to greet gandalf, aragorn, ect. in the fields right before they assaulted mordor. i also wanna see the..... um....... what are they called again?

(runs downstairs, grabs tatterd ROTK book, runs back upstairs, crawls halfway into dogs crate to scratch her ears, sits down at computer, flips through pages, screans AHA!, procedes to type extremely quickly.....)

ghan-buri-ghan, headman of the wild men! thats it! okay, yeah. wanna see if pj gets them right, or ill be a wee bit pissed off. okay, maybe alot a bit pissed off.

I wont deny that Elijah looks very nice as Frodo, but (to me) the only facial expressions he has is slightly pained and a cheesy grin. :)

i like the way wormtounge was portrayed. im not sure who the actor is but he did a good job in his evilness. yeah. Um that's Brad Dourif. He plays the voice of the evil doll Chuckie in Childs Play...Never seen it...just looked up his filmography. He also played a doctor in a movie with Brad Pitt.
I think that in FOTR I liked Gandalf the most...he had a sense of power and authority only an istari wizard can have, yet he also had a kindly grandfatherly air about him, Ian McKellen should've gotten that Oscar cause I dont think he did as well in TTT as he did in FOTR. Maybe it was because he wasn't as prominent. As for TTT my favorites go in this order: Sam, Gollum, Wormtongue, and Frodo.
I also liked Eomer, Eowyn (what a GREAT actress...perfect for the part. I loved her dresses), and Faramir. Yes after I got over the initial shock I began realizing that he did exactly what he did in the books and was as self sacraficial as he was in the books by letting Frodo and Sam go even though his life was forfeit. Oh and I LOVED all of the horses.
Cheers,
Sam

Oh grr definitely NOT Arwen. Her part was so inflated for the movie! Gollum was done excellently; in a survey at school I said Andy Serkis was my favorite actor. The movie made me dislike Boromir, and in the books I thought he was okay. Also I loved Gandalf even more in the movie than I did in the books, if that's possible! Ian McKellan didn't even let on that he was gay. I think everyone was portrayed well, though, except that Elijah Wood and whoever played Pippin (I know his name I just can't think of it right now...ooh it's not Dominic Monagan! It's...Is it Billy Boyd? I think so) didn't look very hobbit-like. They just looked like gawky teenagers. But they did a great job of acting!

I find most of my gripes related to PJ's rendering, and/or the compression neccessary for the film format....visually - all were cast very well - excellent visual representations imho.

While Gandalf was fantastic, the part where he frantically grabs Frodo in the dark and asks "is it secret, is it safe!?!!?!" was over the top - Gandalf never lost his wits!

The Good: I echo most that Bilbo and Boromir were stand-outs. Golumm was without equal. Eomer, Eowyn, Theoden - all great.

The Bad (and Ugly): Elrond (barf), Arwen (in the ford scene primarily, otherwise not too shabby), Faramir (horrible representation). Also, I was/am dissapointed w/Sam (mostly because Astin's accent is never convincing) and not enough of his country-bumpkin humour comes through, I think.

I love Viggo as Aragorn, but again the miserable ford scene, and constant allusions to his hesitancy to claim the throne severly cheapened Aragorn's character as opposed to the books. Gosh, if only I hadn't read the books! It's like trying to listen listening to Creed when you were raised on Pearl Jam :D
