Did you know...

1) That the Folk of Bor were friendly with the Dwarves? (Source: THE WAR OF THE JEWELS, p. 60)

2) That the Folk of Bor were farmers who tilled the lands north of Himring? (Source: THE WAR OF THE JEWELS, p. 61)

3) That the Folk of Bor and the Folk of Ulfang came around the norhern end of the Ered Luin, and left behind clans of related Men who became the most ancient inhabitants of northern Eriador in the Second Age? (Source: THE WAR OF THE JEWELS, p. 60)

4) That the Beorians (first house of the Edain) numbered around 2,000 men and their families when they entered Beleriand? (Source: THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH, p. 307)

5) That the Folk of Haleth (second house of the Edain) numbered around 2,000 men and their families when they entered Beleriand?

6) That the Marachians (third house of the Edain) numbered around 6,000 men and their families when they entered Beleriand? (Source: THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH, p. 307)

7) That the Folk of Haleth held 301 Folkmoots in Brethil from the time of their arrival until the end of the Line of Haldad? (years circa 375 - 500) (Source: THE WAR OF THE JEWELS, p. 283)

 That the Marachians brought "many horses, some asses and small flocks of sheep and goats" with them into Beleriand, whereas the Beorians had no beasts of burden? (Source: THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH, p. 307)

9) That the Folk of Haleth had warrior women? (Sources: UNFINISHED TALES, p. 377; THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH, p. 309)

10) There were wild animals (wolves and ravens) living in Araman when the Noldor passed through that land in the early years of their exile? (Source: "Lay of Leithian", line 2200)

11) That Saeros (originally named Orgof) was doomed to spend 3,000 years in Mandos because of his cruel taunting of Turin? (Source: "Lay of the Children of Hurin", line 547)

No, I did not. But I do now. And I'm sure the Sil forgot a lot more than that! For instance, did you know that the elves were fanatical pizza addicts? Apparently the author forgot to mention this. Sad how Tolkien can mess things up, isn't it?

Oh, by the way, I'm taking note to be careful to make all my lists in the 1), 2), 3) format, so number 8 will come out  !

Hi Martinez. Related work on Eriador: gofree.indigo.ie/~warrenl...gmar.html (http://gofree.indigo.ie/~warrenl/Tolkien/Angmar/Angmar.html )- Folk of Angmar, by Warren Lawless.

While you're at it, could you give some background on Beorn and the Beornings?

There's so much that the Sil doesn't say. That's one reason I'm readying BOLT, though at the rate I'm going I'll be finished in a few years ;)

I don't have time to dwell on the Beornings, right now, but I did write an article on them at Suite101 called "Beorning Questions", if that helps.

I thought I'd put the link on here, but I didn't. www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/tolkien (http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/tolkien)

My main problem would have to be the almost non existent version of the building of Valinor in the Silmarillion. The version in BOLT is so much more complete and satisfying. I love the description of the growth of the two trees and of all the halls. This was sorely missed in the Sil.

Beorn got married sometime after the Battle of Five Armies.

Gosh, it must have been a brave woman!! Wonder what she was like? probably an animal-lover or Beorn would find her unacceptable. And Beorn was the last person I expect to get married.

Darth T. :You are dead on re: detail in Lost Tales that is usually missing in Silm and even in the later HoME 10 and 11 versions.
To remedy this on a small scale we [at the barrowdowns] have a project going on wherein we take UT/ Book of

Lost Tales and the last versions of what was written and edit together [w/out adding any writing only updating old names] afuller version of the Silmarillion. trying to be careful to not include contradictionsinherent in the many versions.
We have so far finished a couple of sections of the Darkening of Valinor -which includes additional detail from the Lost Tales version of the procession of the Eldar to Valimar.
A couple of other versions in which Lost tales details will figure prominently are :The fall of gondolin[which will also incorporate the UT version 'of Tuor and his coming to G'] and the above mentioned of the Coming of the Valar and the Building of Valinor. Feel free to come check our versions out and let us know what you think. It is an extremely large project in a very early stage and doors are wide open for newcomers to the project, although a fair bit of background work is necessary to jump in. They Darkening of Valinor Texts are still in draft stages till we get all sections completed .
