Aragaon, it has to be. look at him such a great king (although crwonless) . A dunedain, the heir to the thrown of minas tirith.
But look at his eyes( or imagine them) . Those eyes of a King. percieve the simplicity, the embedded pride, and the determination of a displaced king. Amazing!
His every move, is graceful, honest, and powerful.
A true King.
I believe he is the most sensational charachter in all of Tolkien's world.
Absolutely marvelous!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, don't close it.
I love many characters Tolkien wrote about.
LotR
- Faramir
- Eowyn
- Legolas
Silmarillion and other books
- Nienor
- Varda
only to name a few

It should be closed, bercause there is already one like it.

The only one I saw was the one Earniel linked to, which was closed by CBG, who said people could look at members' profiles to see their favorite characters. I don't see the harm in allowing this to stay open if it is favorite characters from LotR, since I think looking at each profile would be laborious. I'm assuming Crickhollow agrees since she too let this remain open. If nothing else, this will allow us to have a place to show newbies when they open a thread like it that we then have to close.:D

I think that there are so many g&b characters because tolkien makes a very sharp distinction.

As I'm not native english I don't understand your talking about closing or not. Are you closing it or not?

it seems like they're not. If they do, you just won't be able to post on it, so you'll know.

Ah, okay, thank you for that information.
I think that there are so many g&b characters because tolkien makes a very sharp distinction.
So you don't prefer any character to another?

ok. its surprizing they haven't closed this one yet. I would surely brake the record for maximum shut-downs.
Any way, the thread is taking a turn. We have hopped on to good and bad charachters.
So who's the nastiest? and the best?
and again the favorite ( i have ta ask that, to keep in harmony the subject of the thread)

I have quite an unusual favourite character. Fatty Bolger! He is like the "fifth" hobbit! Just like Sam, Merry and Pippin, he knew about Frodo's ring and if he was more adventurous, he would probably have joined the hobbits on their journey.

mmmmm i hate playing favourites but its too tempting...
Gandalf, Boromir, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas... ohhh bugger it just put me down for the fellowship...
its easier having favourite Baddies
Gothmog and Morgoth are the ultimate baddies...
Other Favourites
elves: Thingol, Finrod Felagund, Feanor, Gil-galad and Beleg Strongbow
men: Turin and Hurin.
Valar: Tulkas and Aule.

It may seem strange to you, but one person I really hate in Tolkiens books is Aragorn. I just can't stand him.
And Maeglin. He's such an idiot.
I also can't find much sympathy for Thingol.

I can see the second 2 but why do you hate Aragorn? I hate the movie's depiction of him, but not the book...

Why I don't like Aragorn.
That's a difficult question. Sometimes I can't even answer this question, because I don't know why I don't like him. I just read the book and wasn't pleased by him. Do you know that, when you just think somebody is not sympathic but can't say why?
And sometimes he seems just so arrogant to me.
I think his role in the LOTR is far too large and he is not that important (strange, I know - Return of the King). He always seems to be the most important member of the fellowship and I don't think he is.
That's all the explanation I can provide.

Interesting. I think that, aside from Gandalf, he is the most important member of the Fellowship.

Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and Aragorn at least are all essential to the success of the fellowship. Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir also contributed in their own ways.

How can anyone not like Aragorn... Frodo's journey was the most important but when you think about all he did was walked to Mordor... he didnt fight any battles and up until Rauros Aragorn had to keep him safe... and then after Rauros Sam had to save him... to me all he seemed to do was whinge whinge whinge (maybe movie frodo is intruding my memory there)
Anywho the other hobbits were way better than frodo..

One of my favourites has to be Boromir. He's noble, brave, and a great warrior.
Legolas is also cool. A Prince among elves. Literally.

aragorn, arrogant??? i think not!!! im sorry, but he didnt even wanna be king in the first place, so how can you see him as arrogant???
on the actual subject:
deffily pippin in the movies (soora, billy boyd is jus soo cute! excuse mah girlish obsessions) but in the books i loved sam and gollum. sam for his loyalty and i just pitied gollum...

I don't have a problem with Aragorn, i actually really like him.
But my favourite characters are definitely Faramir and Eowyn. Faramir because he's intelligent, kind and because of Denethor's treatment of him. And Eowyn because of her deeds- running around killing evil creatures, unlike other females in LotR.

He did want to be king, because Elrond would only let Arwen marry him if he was king.

My favorite character in LOTR is Merry. He is such a smart hobbit with lot of common sense, and it´s very easy for me to relate to him and his feelings. :)
I also like Boromir, Gimli and Legolas a lot. <- I seem to like mostly the minor characters. :)
In Sil Maedhros and Beleg are my favorites. Beleg is such a great friend for Turin and Maedhros.. I guess I like him because he really doesn´t have any chances; no matter what he does, it goes wrong in the end. :(

I can only agree with you, but I don't think that Eowyn was the only strong femal character in Middle-earth (or LotR). But probably the best fighting woman.

hi all
My fav characters are Legolas and Gimli they are just so funny together. I also admire samwise simple because if there was no sam, frodo the lame would not have succeded.

Frodo the LAME? He did get all the way to Mordor, even if Sam helped him.

ok ok I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist! :p
I hate people who agree with you even when what ever you say is obviously totally stupid. I've been on a few sites that are like that it's soooooo borrring and this site being about something that I actually really enjoy, I just had to test the waters, sorry guys.
I love all the characters in Lord of the rings (and how can I call myself a Lotrs fan and not like frodo the most essential character in to book?) :D
PS: Earniel thanks for sticking up for the newbie ;)
PPS: Gwaimir I've seen some of your posts, Don't qwiz me I'm a fan not a proffessor in Lotrs knowledge lol ;p
PPPS: I think the moot is great and that I might have found a site I will enjoy :)
