View Full Version : Rohan Trivia Question...

How many generations of the Rohirrim royal family were living during the reign of Aldor the Old?

If anyone knows, it would be very helpful. [Please put source(s).] Thanx!

Oh, and sorry if this should be somewhere else (Middle Earth maybe?) Books seemed the most appropriate place for it.

I don't know, but I was curious: why did you want to know?
And your mailbox is full: you can't recieve PM's (though I tried). Please delete some messages!

as to why i want to know, i don't... i'm asking on behalf of a engineering drawing classmate. it is kind of a perplexing question, though... how old did Aldor live to be?

Terrific question, Helix! Checked out Appendix A in The Return of the King. Now, Aldor the Old ruled for 75 years, from the death of his father, Brego, in T.A. 2570 to his own death in 2645. (His brother, Baldor, had entered the Paths of the Dead and would not be seen again by living eyes until the ride of the Grey Company.)

During Aldor King's long reign, the future kings Fréa, Fréawine, Goldwine and (barely) Déor (his son, grandson, great-grandson and great-great-grandson, respectively) were around, so the answer is: four generations.

Helix

thank you much... excellent research, Lady of Ithilien! :) He was just curious... his brother asked him, and he didn't know.

Beleg Strongbow
01-14-2003, 02:31 PM
wow. Amazed at the level of effort put into that question. Impressed, too.

I assume this is Glorfindel the excluded you're asking about?

Gwaimir Windgem
01-14-2003, 06:01 PM
Don't forget Aldor himself. ;)

The Lady of Ithilien
01-14-2003, 08:12 PM
GW is correct -- one would have to count Aldor's generation, too, so it would be five generations.

Aw, I was hoping this might turn into a Rohan trivia thread (unless there's already one around that I haven't seen yet). It's surprising how much detail there is about Rohan and the Rohirrim, yet they don't always get examined as closely, given the stirring events of the War of the Ring and Gondor's prominence.

Just in case anyone's interested, here's another Rohan trivia question:At the foot of the walled hill the way ran under the shadow of many mounds, high and green. Upon their western sides the grass was white as with a drifted snow: small flowers sprang there like countless stars amid the turf.

'Look!' said Gandalf. 'How fair are the bright eyes in the grass! Evermind they are called, Simbelmynë in this land of Men, for they blossom in all the seasons of the year, and grow where dead men rest. Behold! we are come to the great barrows where the sires of Théoden sleep.'

'Seven mounds upon the left, and nine upon the right,' said Aragorn.Although Aragorn didn't mention it, the Simbelmyné grew most thickly on the ninth mound. Why?

Good question... I have no idea. Going to have to read that part again :).

Beleg Strongbow
01-15-2003, 05:00 PM
I believe it was because that was the burial place of Helm Hammerhand. Will wait for confirmation before posting another question if right. :)

The Lady of Ithilien
01-15-2003, 05:57 PM
I believe it was because that was the burial place of Helm Hammerhand.Quite right, Beleg Strongbow: the "drifting snow" motif of the flowers recalled his death outside in the cold (and perhaps also that of his son Háma, who along with his men had been lost in the snows earlier that year) during the seige of the Deep by Dunlendings in the Long Winter of 2759. Your turn!

Beleg Strongbow
01-16-2003, 08:52 AM
What was the name of the chief of the Dunlendings who was slain in Edoras?

Helix
01-16-2003, 12:19 PM
Was it Wulf? Or is he only in the card game?

Beleg Strongbow
01-16-2003, 01:58 PM
It is indeed Wulf, but a different Wulf from the card game. Nonetheless the answer is correct: your turn, Helix!

Helix

How did the Rohirrim get the Gap of Rohan to live in? They did not originally live to the north of Gondor.

Beleg Strongbow
01-17-2003, 02:25 PM
After a battle with the wainriders, they made an alliance with the stewards of Gondor and Cirion ceeded them the fields of Calenardhon.

Millane
01-18-2003, 08:40 AM
Eomers father Eomund perhaps???

The Lady of Ithilien
01-18-2003, 10:12 AM
Éomund is the earliest named Marshal that I can find in Appendix A, but the title went back further than him, as Fengel (2870-2953) was said to have been at strife with his marshals. Tough one, Beleg Strongbow! :) More time, please.

Legolaslvr!
01-19-2003, 02:34 PM
Theodred or Theoden are any uf those right???????????

Beleg Strongbow
01-19-2003, 05:16 PM
Well, I'm not sure about Theodred or Theoden (I don't think so and I'd have to check). But... the first response, Eomund, is a correct answer!
Your turn to ask a question, Millane.

Besides the two really famous ones, Shadowfax and Felaróf, there are at least five horses of Rohan specifically named in The Lord of the Rings (there may be more, but these are the ones I found). They are....?

Millane
01-22-2003, 10:34 PM
ohhhhh Arod and Hasufel, Firefoot and Snowmane and Windfola

you would never know how much time i took to get Firefoot and Windfola. 3 coffees worth:eek:

who built the Golden Hall of Meduseld?

Beleg Strongbow

eee... Was it Brego, son of Eorl?
I may not be able to check this in time: so if i'm right the question isWho would have been King (of Rohan) had he not walked the Paths of the Dead?

Millane
01-23-2003, 10:17 PM
nah your right beleg and i would have absolutely no idea with your question

Beleg Strongbow
01-24-2003, 08:51 AM
Ah! Correct! Well, just to say it again, the question is....

Who would have been King (of Rohan) had he not walked the Paths of the Dead?

A hint: it's very closely tied to your question, millane.

The Lady of Ithilien
01-24-2003, 11:31 AM

The Lady of Ithilien
01-24-2003, 09:15 PM
Sorry! Was out walking in the glades of Ithilien. :)

OK, as long as we're in that section of the Rohirrim's world, who was Dúnhere, and what happened to him?

-elfearz-
01-26-2003, 06:18 AM
dunhere was a rider of rohan (well, duh, but anything more specific than that i've forgotten). he died in the battle of the pelennor fields and was buried in the mounds of mundburg.

The Lady of Ithilien
01-26-2003, 09:45 AM
Well, yes, it's true that...in the Mounds of Mundburg under mould they [i] lie
with their league-fellows, lords of Gondor...However, Dúnhere was also a lord in Rohan as well as a Rider and important enough to dine with Théoden King, so overall I've got to say, nope, that's not the answer.

Millane
01-26-2003, 10:11 AM
ummm ok im sorta lost with what you want LoI...
Dunhere was Lord of Harrowdale, the nephew of Erkenbrand, commanded half an Eored in the Battle of the fords of Isen and he fought at the Battle of Pellenor Fields and was killed..
thats all i got

The Lady of Ithilien
01-26-2003, 02:57 PM
Wow, Millane! That's more than I knew. Lord of Harrowdale would have done it (hence the hint about being in that section of Rohan after the Paths of the Dead had been brought up). Was that all in The Lord of the Rings? Will have to go through it again.

Anyway, go ahead....

Millane
01-27-2003, 06:55 AM
ohhhh well thankyou Lady... no i got it out of Unfinished Tales, theres a lot of Rohan knowledge in there....

What was the Oath of Eorl and who was it sworn to?

The Lady of Ithilien
01-27-2003, 08:52 PM
Well, then, it's time for a trip to the libary -- was planning to pick up Letters there, too.

The Oath of Eorl was first sworn to the Steward Cirion by Eorl the Young after the victory of the Field of Celebrant. It was of friendship at need or at the call of the Lords of Gondor, and in exchange Cirion gave the Riders the land between the Anduin and the Isen rivers.

It's said that King Folcwine fulfilled the Oath of Eorl again in the time of Túrin II when Ithilien was invaded in strength by the Haradrim, but I don't know if he renewed the Oath by swearing it to Túrin.

King Éomer Éadig also took the Oath of Eorl to King Elessar when Elessar renewed the gift of Cirion after the War of the Ring.

Aye, matey, I've mooted aboard.

Thanks, Millane -- wasn't sure if there might be more information in Unfinished Tales you had in mind. Have got to get that book.

Er, hmm, OK: What rituals do the Rohirrim perform when they bury a king and greet his successor?

Beleg Strongbow
01-29-2003, 09:18 AM
A cup of wine is filled. All of the Kings of the Mark are named, and at the name of the deceased, the succesor drains the cup. Then they hail the new king. -RotK

The Lady of Ithilien
01-29-2003, 10:39 AM
Right! (This after the deceased king is laid in a barrow with his arms and his favorite possessions and Riders of his house have ridden around the barrow on white horses while singing a song about him and his reign.)

Your turn....

Beleg Strongbow
01-29-2003, 11:07 AM
Must think of question fast..... um.... easy one... because I need it quick...
Where is the eastern boundary of Rohan?

Helix
01-29-2003, 02:24 PM
the wold downs? what exactly counts as "rohan?"

Beleg Strongbow
01-29-2003, 02:32 PM
The Mark of Rohan. Their kingdom. Calenardhon, as ceeded them by the Stewards.

And it's not the wold downs. I'm looking for the location of the East Wall of Rohan.

Legolaslvr!
01-29-2003, 09:34 PM

Mordomin

The Eastern border of Rohan was the River Anduin. There is no 'wall' involved.

Beleg Strongbow
01-30-2003, 09:28 AM
Actually, it was a bad question. The East Wall of Rohan was another name for the western boundary of the Emyn Muil. But I was so confusing, I'll give it to Mordomin. Your turn, Mordomin.

Elves get sick, according to Tolkien, but can't die from sickness. Good thing... I'm so tired today I had to come home from school...
I guess I'll go take some of those doses of JRRT.

Things got a little crazy here in the woodlands of Ithilien, and I actually forgot I'd answered :o -- didn't think it was the right answer, but had no time to look it up afterwards. Thanks, Beleg! Nice fanfare, too.

Uh. A question. Um, OK...this kind of builds on the "horse" question above. Which of these horses was not a horse of Rohan:
Hasufel.

Windfola.

Firefoot.

Lightfoot.

Roheryn.

Stybba.

Bucklebury Ferry
02-11-2003, 08:41 PM
lightfoot?

can i change my anwer? because know i think its stybba

The Lady of Ithilien
02-11-2003, 09:43 PM
Hi, Bucklebury Ferry!

Sorry, but either way it doesn't work. Stybba was ridden by Merry from Helm's Deep to Dunharrow, and as for Lightfoot, this inscription was carved on Snowmane's Howe:Faithful servant yet master's bane,
Lightfoot's foal, swift Snowmane.

Bucklebury Ferry
02-11-2003, 09:45 PM
well then was it roheryn? because i don't recognise that name

Shadowfax
02-12-2003, 12:54 AM
The answer is Firefoot, I believe.

Millane
02-12-2003, 04:57 AM
i think it was roheryn... it was aragorns horse if im correct and i dont recall it saying anywhere that it was a horse from Rohan... but i may be mistaken

The Lady of Ithilien
02-12-2003, 10:06 AM
Well, actually Firefoot was Éomer's horse.

Roheryn is the correct answer, and two got it (see "Return of the King," where Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the Rangers are getting ready to leave Helm's Deep for Dunharrow and the Paths of the Dead). Tell me if you disagree, but I think Millane's due the next turn, as he further identified whose horse it was (in The Silmarillion index of Elvish root terms, under "roch," it's said that 'Roheryn' means 'horse of the lady' and the name was given because Arwen had given it to Aragorn).

Fimbrethil, don't be sorry -- that would have been a good question and, inspired, I'll ask it:

Where was Théoden born, and if not in Rohan, why was he the King of Rohan?

-elfearz-
02-15-2003, 09:34 PM
he was born in gondor (his father thengel married morwen of lossarnach there & they had 3 kids). but when thengel's father fengel (king of rohan) died, thengel (his only son) was recalled to rule rohan. so when he died, theoden (his only son) became king.
sorry, i couldn't possibly have said that in a more longwinded way

OK, you meet a Rider of Rohan on his (and in one notable case, her) way to battle: what is the Rider wearing, and describe in detail three items of the Rider's war gear?

The Lady of Ithilien
03-02-2003, 11:47 AM
Hint: Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn could tell you.

Fimbrethil
03-02-2003, 05:45 PM
Three items hmmm....
1)The spear-sharp
2)The helmet-something that looks almost like a horses head coming down over his(her) nose
3)The sheild-most have desings on them and the desing is a horse

Lady of Rohan
03-02-2003, 06:08 PM
The rider is wearing a light helm, and burnished skirts of mail hung down on there knee's.

The items are an ash spear, a helmet, and a sheild with horse designes on them.

That was all that I could find ( I took the items from Fimbrethil). I expect that you want more of an answer but I can't find any thing else.

The Lady of Ithilien
03-02-2003, 08:35 PM
"...their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen. In their hands were tall spears of ash, painted shields were slung at their backs, long swords were at their belts, their burnished shirts of mail hung down upon their knees."

From "The Riders of Rohan" in The Two Towers (emphasis added)It's one of my favorite scenes, imagining 5,500 of these impressive warriors on their great grey war horses, thundering in formation over the darkened plain, and one poor little hobbit in the middle of it all, bumping along behind his taciturn Rider and holding on for dear life, trying to loosen his sword and hoping he won't fall off and be trampled.

Of course, the helmet would be part of their war gear, too, though I'd been thinking of the sword. Éomer's helmet had a long white horse's tail on it, but I hadn't read anywhere about the shape of their helmets or the designs painted on their shields. Those are good details. Lady of Rohan also got the two items they were wearing, though, so LoR, right! it's your turn. :)

Hello? Hello, Lady of Rohan? Not gone to Mundburg, I hope. :)

I'll wait one or two more days before asking another question.

Sorry, I don't have a question hard enough for all of you (your all so good at this game, my questions would be too easy). The next person that comes by with a question, please ask for me! Sorry!

Aw, Lady of Rohan, are you sure? I used to feel that way in some of the other trivia threads, too. But one gradually comes to see that it's not a competition: what one person takes for granted in a story, others haven't noticed yet. That's what's so much fun about it. Even asking something that seems very simple (OK, maybe not, 'what color was Éowyn's hair' :) but just about anything else) is good: it may stump people who hadn't noticed that part that you thought of, and it makes us all dig in and look at a very enjoyable story even closer. For instance, I never realized so many people enjoyed the story of Helm so much, until people here spoke up about it and I went back in and read it all. And Rohan's such a big country with such interesting people in it .... just think of your favorite part and ask a question about it, if you want. (Hope so.)

Ok, I'll try. I am not all that creative, so you'll have to settle. How many times had the red leaves fallen in Mirkwood since the Golden Hall was built?

ok...

"Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by."

who said this and what was he referring to?

This rang a bell but I just could not remember where I'd read it, until going wa-a-a-a-y back in history: Fram, chieftain of the Eorlingas, said it to the Dwarves when he sent them the teeth of Scatha the dragon (which he'd killed) in answer to their claim on the dragon's hoard. I think the Dwarves (? if it was Durin's family or not) killed him for that.

exactly right, loi :p your go...
i dunno if it was durin's family or not, but i'd be interested to find out if anyone else does. i just pulled it out of the lotr appendices (will have to read unfinished tales again...and get my hands on a home set  )

Éomer is the Third Marshal of Riddermark. OK, who are the other two at the time of the War of the Ring? (A clue: they aren't named as such in the story itself, though we do see each of them leading their respective éored; however, the entry in the index by each of their names calls them marshals, at least in the HMCo. 1965 edition of The Lord of the Rings.)

elfhelm and grimbold?

The Lady of Ithilien
03-13-2003, 10:52 AM
Yes!

I don't know that it's spelled out anywhere but get the impression that Éomer's "turf," besides the East Emnet, included Meduseld and its immediate area; Elfhelm's, that part of Rohan between Éomer's turf and Gondor (i.e., southwards -- he said he had been down to Mundburg in previous days); and Grimbold's, that west of Éomer's. Just a guess.

Your turn, elfearz.

elfearz, when you get back home and done with all those assignments, you're gonna have to do two questions here!!! ;)

um, er, hoom, hum, eh.....

OK. Where did they bury all the men of the Mark who fell near the Fords of Isen during battles there in the war of the Ring?

Fat middle

i think they put them in a mound in the little island that was in the Isen at the fords.

Which of Rohan's kings was known for being greedy, as well as other not-so-good things?
