Gandalf+Shadowfax Question

in T2T,I saw Gandalf with his feet in stirrups on Shadowfax.i thought Shadowfax never wore saddles?

Shadowfax doesn't wear a saddle? Don't remember that (in the book I mean) but I do know they made the same change with Arod. In the book Legolas asks that the saddle be remvoed coz elves don't need them.
