so my question is, where does this show up? After mount doom? it could be in Shelob's lair, but isnt that dark? All I know is its in ROTK.

looks like it's after sam chases shelob off, actually. and to be logical, it couldn't be dark because cameras need light to film, so im sure PJ found some way to get around that.

what im concerned with is,

he looks funny.

Of course it s SAM!!!! He's sad because he thinks Frodo's dead (probably) and hes just had the battle with the Shelob hasn't he? So he must be a bit battlescarred!

But I saw another pic earlier of Frodo in Shelob's Lair and its dark. I know its there because theres vines and stuff and he has the vial of Galadriel out. I'll try to find it.

Yeah that picture is after Frodo has been stung by Shelob and Same chased her off, and he is obviously holding Frodo thinking he is dead, "The Choices of Master Samwise".....

The picture of Frodo and Sam is actually from the promotional 2003 Return of the King Calendar. There are some great hi-res pictures at various sites . . but I'll link you to War of the Ring. They have posted all 12 months:

You'll see Aragorn, Gollum, Legolas and Gimli, Arwen, an orc, Frodo with the phail of Galadriel, Sam and Frodo, Denethor and Faramir, Gandalf, Eowyn, Galadriel, and Pippin and Merry.

I think the picture is after Shelob's lair. Maybe Sam fights off Shelob and escapes with Frodo, but is sad because he thinks Frodo is dead, but then Frodo awakens, and there will be no scenes of Sam rescuing Frodo from Cirith Ungol.

i think it is when Sam thinks that Frodo is dead but you are right... it isn't dark enough
maybe it is when Sam finds Frodo after he is held captive in Mordor, when he gets him back from the Orcs...
or maybe it is after he looses the ring, i can not remember for sure if Sam has to help him from the walk in The Mountain

i agree, Sam doesn't look...well...Sam-ish...and Frodo's died his hair a lighter colour!

and about the cutting out Cirith Ungol, Peter Jackson really does know how to cut out good bits from the book!:mad:

The scene in Cirith Ungol was filmed. Anyone can read about it on the official site. The article has been there for over a year.

Later, we sit and watch the filming, in the top room of the tower of Cirith Ungol. The scene is trimmed to its essentials. The dialog is not always Tolkien's, but I have to return to the book to be sure, the spirit is so close. I get to hear one of my favorite lines: "You can't go walking in the Black Land in naught but your skin, Mr. Frodo." The essence of Sam. Peter gives the dialog a subtext. Sam is thinking, "I'm going to destroy that thing that's causing you so much pain -- by myself if that's what's needed."

They spend all day on this bit, so critical to the emotional arc of the story. In the end, Sean Astin as Sam delivers the line with weariness, grief, determination, courage, and love. I leave with tears in my eyes.

To me, the pic looks like a scene right after Shelobs lair. Also, I really hope the don't cut Cirith Ungol! That would make me really MAD!
