Ok, does anyone get annoyed by their friends (if they're not Tolkien fans at all) when they say a LOTR character's or actor's name wrong?
I do, so far my friends have been able to make these mistakes:

Legless (Legolas)
Orlando Briar (Orlando Bloom)
Ian McKing (Ian McKellen)
Aragorn (Legolas (don't know how they get mixed up:confused: ))
Boromir (Aragorn (again, don't understand mix-ups:confused: ))

The following two were mistakes made in a Science lesson, in which we were learning the Periodic Table:

Argon (Aragorn)
Bromine (Boromir)

hmmm...i swear the last two were on purpose...but anyway! if YOU have had simular situations, post here!:D

Yep! Always happens to me!

Frodo=Fido(Don't know why they think he's a dog;) )
Legolas=Negonas(I really don't know why, I think they just think it sounds like that in the movie)
Aragorn=Ahorn(Again, I don't know why)
Eowyn=Eeeolan

etc etc etc:D :rolleyes:

i heard some guys talking about TTT and i heard some mistakes that i *very* loudky corrected them:

The-guy-with-the-axe (Gimli)
Bowman (Legolas)
The Trees (Ents)

and finally...

The-guy-with-the-sword (Aragorn)

very frustrating! >_<

Arwen=Ar..Ar..Ar..You-know-the-one-I-mean..with-the-brown-hair?
Gollum=Th-strange-thing
Merry=Pippin
Pippin=Merry:rolleyes:

My boyfriend has the "similar name problem."

He gets Arwen and Eowyn confused (not just the names, the characters).

And he's not sure of the difference between Sauron and Saruman.

I'm sure JRRT gave these characters similar names on purpose - but why? Any ideas?

My friends don't get the names confused very often, but they frustrate me anyway. One friends comment: 'I'm not going to read the books unitll I see RotK, because I want to be suprsied'
AAAAAAGGHH! Aslo, they do call Ents 'the Trees' sometimes.

after Debate class i overheard some guys discussing it... however a girl was talking to me so i only heard little excerpts, and here is the only one i can remember...

guy 1: "Ooo i like gollum!"
(all guys are silent for a second...which is uncommon)
guy 2: "....which one is that?"
guy 3: "Oh isn't he the elf..."
guy 1: "-no-"
guy 2: "the dwarf?"
guy 1: "No, the 'they stole my preciousss' guy...!"
guys 1, 2, 3: "OOoooooh"
guy 3: "you mean that he isnt an elf?!?"

I was like AAUUUGH but i had to re-divergt my attention as the friend was apparently awaiting my response to a question.

Legolas: "that hot elf with the bow"
Aragorn: "that hot guy with the sword"
Frodo: "Feldo" (I practically died when I heard that)

Funny thing, I had the opposite effect happen, over the Christmas holiday I was watching the Godfather trilogy with my family and I kept saying "Frodo" instead of "Fredo" :D

What bothers me more than movie-goers-but-not-readers who mispronounce is readers who do. One of my professors insists on leh-GO-las. Like, learn some elvish, man.

I have friend who remembered them by:
Aragorn=arrow-gone
Legolas=legoland

I've had to put up with the freddo=frodo chocolate bar one too.

Oh & lets not forget meegon=smeagol, i heard that one on the way home by some people sat behind me. i almost turned around & swatted them one.

"Have you heard Borrow-min is going to be played my sean bean"
That was my brother, he did get swatted.

I say I say "Ay-O-Wyn" too!
Hardly any of my friends no any of the names

Legolas there is quite a few. There's
"Legless"
"Legoooolasy"
"Legoman"
"The Pointy Eared Bow Twanger" (thats what orlando Bloom calls him)

Aragorn - "Guy with the sword" or " Not Sean Bean ...the other one"

Gollum - "Slimy thing that is always eating fish" and the "horrible thing"

Ents - "The talking, walking tree thingies"

Ringwraiths - "scary black things"

Frodo - "Frodie" and "the small guy with the ring"

Same thing happens to me!! Bleurghelbaba. It annoys the hell outta me!

Legolas= "Hot elfie" and "WHOOO boy!" ((that was my aunt -- lol)), "Blondie #1"

Aragorn= "Adam", "Acorn", "Arrow", and "Greasy Scary Man"

Frodo= "Fro-go", "Frog-o", "Ring-holder", and "Big-eyed grasshopper" ((when I heard that I nearly killed her...I don't know why he looks like a grasshopper to her....))

Haldir= "Hallie", "Blondie #2", "Dear"

Peregrin ((Pippin they get right, but when they try to say his real name...watch out))= "Pear-eh-?", "Perry!" ((One of my friends said it should be Perry and Merry, not Pippin and Merry. LoL, gotta agree wth that one...))

I'll post more when I remember them...my close friends have long since learned how to pronounce the names -- at least around me, because if they don't, I kill them. *evil grin*

--F.G.--

P. S. Sam and Frodo are meant for each other!! The way they look at each other in the movies...either that's very good acting or they truly harbor feelings for each other ((I think the latter is the truth)). ;) ;) :D

Now all of you are looking at me like :eek: and :mad: right?? Well THINK ABOUT IT!!! wahahahaaa.... I'm not crying, believe me...or maybe I'm tearing with mirth...I like that word... I also like the word mithril...it's just pretty....

It's in Èomer, and Théoden too. did i get it in the right direction...lol...i dun think so...but it annoys me when people say it's annoying when people pronounce it the RIGHT WAY!!!! stop complaining....wait i'm complaining...never mind...CARRY ON!!!!

.............Are you high or drunk? Sam and Frodo are not "in love". Have you ever heard of a relationship that transcends sex? That really gets me about this world; everything is always sex. If two people are close, it has to be sex. He is loyal, he is devoted to him, he loves him; but not in that way.

Ever notice that Sam got married and had THIRTEEN kids?

To the naysayers, one can read this into the book if one wants, and if you check out the cast commentary on the Extended Edition DVD, you'll find that Ian McKellan (sp?) encouraged Astin and Wood to play up the male-male subtext for young gay audiences members who would want to see such a relationship. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

hmmmmmm I'm thinkin my sisters win the prize for freakiest names :)

Gandalf-Tenderloin
Gollum/Smeagol-Feces (as in animal poo)

I made the mistake of trying to explain where Gollum came from and somehow they thought Feces sounds alot like Smeagol *sigh*

P. S. Sam and Frodo are meant for each other!! The way they look at each other in the movies...either that's very good acting or they truly harbor feelings for each other ((I think the latter is the truth)).

Where did he say that? I think I've watched all the extras on the DVD's and I don't remember him saying that. Or did he just imply that?

In the cast commentary. It's when Frodo awakens in Rivendell. Ian McKellan says that he pointed out to Astin and Wood that the book specifically states that Sam takes Frodo's hand, and that first, hardcore readers would want to see such little details make the movie, and second, gay viewers would appreciate it.

I think I'd heard that somewhere before.
thats really cool they did that! I didnt even realize that that lil bit was in the book.

(edit: this second section is a lil rant, it seems like every topic on this mb has gone in that derection. it is NOT directed at anyone.)

I'm sorry, I just have a slight problem with believing that Sam and Frodo want eachother. *sigh* It ruins the whole story to me. What they have is more of a Knights of the Round Table love. Ya know? Like brother, or maybe even father son (because isnt Frodo quite a bit older?) But anyways, I dont think that they really want eachother in that way.

My mom calls Gandalf the following:

Gregnog
Ganondorf (same with my cousin. also, for those who don't know, Ganondorf is the villain in the Legend of Zelda series)
Gildorf
Garnerderf
That wizard

She also used to call Gollum "that creepy 'my precious' thing"

And my grandma calls Aragorn "the good-looking one" and Legolas "the blonde one"

I know exactly what U mean exept sometimes when I'm talking to someone about LOTR, they don't know what I'm talking about unless I like describe it in huge detail.

Like:

Me: I think that Gollum was really good in the Two Towers
Person: Gollum
Me: Smeagol, he had the ring for 500 years
Person:???
Me: The guy who hisses and leads Frodo and Sam to Mordor
Person: I didn't know Gamduff (they mean Gandalf) hissed
Me: Not Gandalf, he lead them to Moria
Person:???
Me: The Dwarvish place taken over by orks
Person: I didn't know Isslenguarrd was Dwarvish
Me: Your completely hopeless

I've already posted some of the things that people in my school call LotR characters but i just remembered some more.

Aragorn: he guy with the orange hair that goes to his shoulders.
Boromir:the guy that died, you know the one with the horn.
Gadriel: Pretty Girl
Saruman:The ugly guy with the white beard
Uruk-Hai: The ugly things that kill the guy with the horn.

I don't get why they call Aragorn "The guy with the Orange Hair" but whatever.

Firhithiel did you mean the actors or the characters? I have to point out that Sam and Frodo care fo each other genuinly, Sam would die for Frodo and Frodo would do anything for Sam...they're protective of each other as best friends are supposed to be, and that might include giving a kiss to the brow or holding their hand when they're scared. As for Sean and Elijah...they're doing what PJ hired them to do...portray Sam and Frodo as best friends...which is what they've done, and rather well too...those looks are just part of the acting. Actors rely on each other's facial expressions and voice tones...it's a very emotion oriented kinda thing.

I've given up telling my friend Said (Sigheed) that Aragorns name is AiraGORN not AraGONE. One of me mums friends called Merry "I saw that one guy on Hetty Wainthrop". Elijah himself called the Ents "Treebeards" *winces*. But the worst blow of all came when a boy at my school said that the Ring finders nephew's name was *gulps*...Fren...he says there are 5 elvish rings of power...Earth,Fire,Water,Wind and Air...and he also says he's read the books eight times...AUUUGGGHHH. That's one of those times when I wish I knew how to curse in elvish...or at least had a hard back book with me to hurl at his fiendish head.
Cheers,
Sam

Well, most of my friends know pretty much about LOTR but then there is the forum I spend most of my time on, pbreview, so many typing errors on the names, it's so sad

Boromir- burmir, borumur, birimir, and on and on
Frodo- Froto
Gandalf- Gandor, Gandorf, Gondalf, The wizard guy, and everything else imaginable
Elrond- Agent Smith
Eowyn- They dont even know how to spell this
Arwen- liv tyler! LIV TYLER (then goes on to rave about how hot she is)
Sauron- Sarun, Surun, The eye guy
Aragorn- Aragon, the hot guy
Legolas- Lego, leglas, the other hot guy
And the one the pisses me of the most Smeagol and Gollum- Smegul, Smagul Smeagul, nazgul (yes someone came up with that for smeagol somehow), golum, gullon, gulom, The hissy dude, the precious dude, the ugly dude

*sigh* it goes on and on

From the Encyclopedia of Arda Online
Pronunciation: Approximately 'earw'in'1

Note:
1 The diphthong éo is effectively extinct in English, and pronunciation is doubly difficult since Tolkien's example, the name Theobald, is also rare. The vowel-sound of the word 'ear' comes close to the correct pronunciation.

I almost have the same problem as Fimbrethil. There's only one person i can talk to about LoTR the book. And she hasn't even read it.

Also, i say it EE-Oh-Wen. Some site (can't remember which-so many Tolkien sites) said that the dipthong 'eo' is meant to be pronounced sort of like 'ear'. So that's how i say it.

What's more frustrating? Friends that get the name wrong, or can't even remember the characters. I say the latter. I mean, how can you forget the man who got shot with arrows several times, then died?

:confused:

Lalaith

I also have no person to talk about the book, but some people to talk about the movie. But they are not that obsessed like me and they have not read the book. It would be different to discuss the movie with somebody who has read the book and loved it (like me).

4. Boromir = that Rohan person...hes an elf isnt he? (no...just..no)

Totally agree. besides, the reason why Sam held Frodo's hand in the book was because he was wondering whether it was still cold b/c after Frodo had gotten stabbed, his whole arm went cold. there was nothing significant about Sam doing that, any more than when someone feels your forehead after you've been sick to see if your fever has gone down.

Very recently I have heard three different versions of Sauron. Now, most people who have read the pronunciation key in the appendixes of LotR, already are aware that Sauron is pronounced "Sour-on". Other pronunciations I have heard vary from "Sarr-on" (very common), "Soar-on" (not the most very common), and, my favorite, "Share-on" (coming from one of my friends, but he's only seen the first movie). What next???:confused:

here are some more:
Aragorn:Aragon
Legolas:That guy with the arrows.
Frodo:FrOdo as in lotto
Gollum:That creepy blue "my precious" thing.
Theoden:Theodor
And finally, Arwen:A...A...Eowernen....yah know the lady who Strider was makin out with. AND THAT WAS A GUY WHO READ ALL THE BOOKS.:mad:

i have like 6 friends who realla like LotR, but deffily not as much as me...its sooooo annoying cuz i can only talk to like 1 of em about the books cuz she's the only one who finished em and is willing to talk to me about em.
i think it was the 3rd time i went to see TTT that these guys were behind me and mah friend and all throughout the 'boring parts' they would talk incessantly about 'that blonde guy jumping onto the horse' , 'those monster things on the animals' , or 'that guy with the sword who was killing all the orcs' and even 'the little short thing that had a low voice and was really funny.' i was soooo mad!!!!
and some of mah 'non-lotr' friends are so annoying:
gollum- ewww, that freaky little thing!!!
gandalf- the big wizard dude
boromir- oh i hate him, he's so mean (and another boromir thing. on his death day, i brought in my copy of TTT to read during lunch/discuss his death etc. but even mah lotr friends told me 'oh, i hated him anyway' or 'i dont wanna waste mah lunch period for him!' i was really disapointed.

Sam:The fat hobbit...the chubby short guy
Pippin:the really funny guy, the really funny short guy
Merry: the one that hangs out with the other funny short guy
Gimli:the short..err hobbit(I was like WHAT? he isn't a hobbit)the guy with the beard and axe
Gandalf: The old guy..the guy with the pointy hat the wizard Gandaft,

here are some annoying names my family members have given the characters from lotr:
legolas: the hot guy(my cousin and aunt), the guy all of the girls like(my uncle), lego(my youngest sister), legovan(my dad), and the guy who looks like evita(my andrew lloyd weber fan sister)
gandalf: whats-his-name(my aunt), randolf, randy, gary(my cousin), the greyish guy(my mom)

the worst is my ENGLISH teacher. yes, the teacher who has us read "fine literature". she took off ten points on my book project on lord of the rings cuz she thought that aragorn was spelled argon. according to her, i had mispelled it everywhere in my report and when it was spelled aragorn in the BOOK, it was a typing error. that really annoys me. my english teacher hasnt read lotr or a number of well known classics, like watership down and treasure island.

TopazJedi
03-29-2003, 08:43 PM
That must be frustrating! Did you ever get the points back? Honestly, that is ridiculous! You could argue that if the book was wrong, you can't be held responsible for the editor's mistake and in useing the spelling from the book, you were differing to the editor as a higher authority. (meaning that you didn't know any better and can't be blamed for the mistake) What did you say when the teacher told you? I swear, i would have made such a stink if that had happened to me. I would not have let the teacher get away with that, that is totally unfair. :mad: :mad: :mad:

Yes, indeed. Absolutely ridiculous. Did you ask how she knows it's spelled Argon?

Y'know, that is just...so STUPID.

No. Doesn't the É mean that that syllable is stressed? So it doesn't really clear that up for me. I still say É ô win. But isn't there a dictionary at the end of the Sil that'll tell you for sure?

But what I can't stand is when readers mispronounce things by adding or changing consonants. Like Hobberton (Hobbiton), Rohannir (Rohirrim), or Balgrog (Balrog). There's no excuse for that.

Anyway most of my friends haven't seen the movie or read the books. And I won't let them see it until they finish reading. But my friend Joe once refered to Aragorn as "the hot guy with the black suit" because that's how he hears him most refered to. I punched him for that.

Usually if it's a person that has no idea who Dain is I tend to smile and walk away. :D

"No, the other one, with the pointy hat..."
"Wasn't his name George?"

I am surprised she let them go with their lives....I wouldn't have!

LOL!! apparently these people were not paying attention to the storyline of the movie to begin with...

truthfully i do not see how the plot didn't make sense to them, but then again i guess science fiction/fantasy stories is like a completely different dimension to the majourity...

i know loads of people who didn't understand the plot, and who refuse to see it more than once. When i try to explain it they get more confused than ever.

"So the guy with the sword is called ...oh i know...it's errr..."
I'm like "which one?"
"The ugly ones"
"Orks?"
"no that guy from that film with Josh Hartnett"
"The Faculty?"
"Yeah...wasn't it good?"
"Elijah Wood was frodo?"
"Who's Frodo? oh he's the tall one with blonde hair isn't he"
"errrr...no"

It goes on forever so i give up with explaining it. :rolleyes:

Its maddening how many people get those two mixed up! But then they are both evil and the names are very similar, still though...

When I was very little, I knew Legolas's name was Legolas, but I pictured him without Legs:o :p

lol, I first heard of Legolas when I was 5 or 6, so I think I can be forgiven at that age...

I was telling a friend of mine how I got a free ticket to TTT and how excited I was, to which she replied "Oh, is that about the two towers that got destroyed last year? I didn't know they were making a movie.." Please! Doesn't it annoy you when people never get excited about anything except cute guys? And even then, they can't remember their names!!!! GRRRR!!!

Aragorn - not-the-elf-the-other-guy (my mom can never remember his name)
Pippin - Pipkin (arg...)
Sam - Semwise Gamshee
Boromir - Borrowbeer
Galadriel - Gladwrapriel

ARG! Sometimes these make me sooo mad! :D :rolleyes: :mad:

My dad calls Frodo "Photo" which ticks me off

and my friends dad call Legolas the "Butterfly Nancing In The Snow"- I almost ate him alive when he said that.

Then my sis calls Frodo "Alien-head" and can never tell Sauron and Saruman's names apart..her excuse: "They're both the bad guys, both after the ring, both after Frodo, and both have ugly creatures chaasing after Frodo...so there really is no difference"
OF COURSE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE

and my mom had a hard time remembering Aragorn's name for a while.....

It's all frustrating!!!!

My dad watched Lord of the Rings for the first time last week and he was getting confused between Saruman and Gandalf and he kept calling the Hobbits "the little kids" or the "kids with the swords"
and he could only remember Arwen as "my hero's daughter"
he recognised Sean Bean though and Viggo.

It took a lot of explaining though and he said he remembered better with his names.
:rolleyes: so it's still "the kids"

lol it was funny though!

Haha! Er....yeh...

One of my friends keeps calling Gollum "the weird thing in the loin cloth"...hehe

And then my cousin (who is 7), calls Legolas "the pretty girl elf", but I find that really funny :D

Oh, and Aragorn has been dubbed:
Argon
Rargorn
Gornarag
Aragoog
"the really hot guy I like"- my mother's name for him...at least thats her naem for him when my dads not there...;)
and simply....."him"

And Borimir is "the mean dead dude" to my family...I don't think they'll ever get it straight! They also confuse Eowyn for Arwen :rolleyes:

Eomer=Faramir

I usually don't talk to my friends about LotR, because they don't like it, and I don't want to hear people dissing LotR. :mad:
But when I do, these are what mistakes they make:
Frodo = Frolo
Gandalf = Gandy
Saruman = Sauron
Sauron = Saruman
Aragorn = Argon
Elrond = Eyebrows (even though that's pretty funny :p )
Legolas = Leglas

I can't think of any more right now, but I'm sure there are tons more.

Calling Aragorn "Aragon" is pretty common. As a point of interest, Aragon is the name of a poet...Louis Aragon.

My older brother calls Dvorak "Dijorjak" which is incredibly annoying.
