View Full Version : ROTK Looking To Be The Best Of The Trilogy?
Pippin Skywalker

With Two Towers in wide release and the New Year now here it is time to start the countdown to Return of the King.
With Fellowship a triumph I found TTT just a tad beneath my expectations but still very good. Now with ROTK on the way we have wrapped up in that package Eowyn and the witchking, Paths of the Dead, SHELOB!, and maybe some things TTT couldn't hold in its three hour structure. Even if you did not think Towers a bit imperfect I'm sure you share my "King" enthusiasm. I think it could be THE best. And if Towers doesn't take the Best Picture award then ROTK better and probably will.
So...now that we have this rolling what are you looking forward to most? Giant Scary -Run For Your Life-Spider, Crazy-Denny (Denether), BIG Volcano, Paths of the dead? Speak and you shall be heard! Will we see Gandalf confront Saruman at Orthanc? Will the Scouring of the Shire be back in at least in part? (Please PJ!)

I'm really looking forward to seeing shelob, Eowyn and the witch king and the paths of the dead. But i also hope that they do have the scouring of the shire at the end. but because Sam didn't get his box of dirt from Galadrial something makes me think that there wont be (but i still hope there is! :p).

Do not trust a hope;) .
I am really looking forward to seeing Pippin and Merry swear loyalty to Denethor and Theoden. And of course Pippin looking into the Palantir, since that was moved, after he and Merry reunite w/ the rest of the gang. I also look forward to The Choices of Master Samwise!:) And when he finds Frodo in the tower! And also the journey through Mordor, I really hope he doesn't skimp on that! Then of course I wonder if I'll cry at the end, at the Grey Havens.:( Oh, and of course Dernhelm and the killing of the Witch King!

I bet I'll be crying all the way through it:rolleyes: What age rating is it going to be anyway?
And how are they going to do the bit with Frodo naked? I can't wait to see the bit in the Cracks of Doom! I hope they do that really well, 9-fingered Frodo!!
I can't wait!! :D

Thats exactly what I was wondering! Probably have a bit of him from like the chest up or something, ya know so you get the general idea and such. Dunno tho...:)
I am really really looking forward to seeing Denethor losing it, Faramir and Eowyn, and ya know we can always hope that there will be a scouring ;)

In the books, Tolkien kept switching the story-telling perspective around to different Characters.
Peter Jackson's films copied Tolkien closely by making Frodo the main character in FOTR and by making Arargorn the main character in the first half of TTT and splitting the perspective between Frodo/Sam in the second half.
My reason for wondering about this is that in the books, ROTK is mostly told through the eyes of Pippin, Merry & Sam in each of there respective storylines.
I wonder if Peter Jackson will continue this idea with Merry, Pippen, & Sam as the main characters of ROTK like Frodo was in FOTR and Aragorn was in TTT?
If this is so, I wonder if PJ will have Aragorn, Gimli & Legolas dissappear off-screen from the movie after the Paths of the Dead and then reappear aboard the the Corsair Ships during the Battle of Peleanor Fields like in the Books or show their entire journy on-screen?

I would guess that it will be pg-13, like the other two. Also, in TTT the book, Gandalf is naked when he 'dies' after fighting the Balrog, and PJ did that pretty well, I thought. I think that he'll find a way to do the bit with Frodo too:)

*SPOILERS*
I'm looking forward to the tower of Cirith Ungol, where Sam rescues Frodo. I think Frodo will be naked in that scene, but it will be done tastfully (plus I have seen a picture of Frodo naked from the waist up). This is my favorite part of the book and I really hope they stick with the book very closely. They better have almost the same dialogue as the book (`Frodo! Mr. Frodo, my dear!'), Sam kissing Frodo on the forehead and Frodo laying in Sam's lap. I doubt, though, they will include the latter two.

In a way, RoTK will be the worst, cause it will be the last one! (wah!) :( I'll hate the end. You know that sick feeling you get when you've finished reading the books! Of course, I'm excited about the movie, but it's bound to be a big let down at the same time.

I don't see how PJ can possibly fit everything in that he's left for RotK.
He's got the battle of Pellenor fields, battle of the Black Gate, fight with Shelob, capture by orcs and escape, journey across Mordor, Denethor and his madness, what else? Oh, Merry and Pippin swearing fealty to their respective lords, dealing with Saruman and his death; looking into the Palantir . . . crowning and wedding of Aragorn; romance between Faramir and Eowyn . . .there's no room for any scouring even if he wanted to put it in. he'll have to just eliminate some of those things.
Should have put more into TT.
So what would you leave in and take out?

I agree with 9-fingered-Frodo and Mt. Doom, and the crying eyes out bit aswell. The bit i'm not looking forward to is the Frodo-naked part *shudders* *get's hit by Frodo/Elijah fans* ...owch... i think it's gonna be 15 (FOTR=PG13, TTT=12A, ROTK=15, it all fits!:D).

Ghan Buri Ghan!
I want to see how scared Gimli can really get in the Paths of the Dead. I also want to see Dernhelm stick it to the Morgul King. Other tidbits like the 3-headed watcher and how Frodo and Sam disguise themselves as orcs.
PJ and Elijah said that it might take more than 3 hrs or as long as it needs to be. Hopefully, they're refering to the cinematic version and we'll have an even longer extended ROTK DVD.:D

I saw a ton of big time spoiler pix on The Barrow Downs today. Even Shelob!
SPOILERS! SPOILERS!!!!!
Here is the address, spoilers mind you!

I am confused about one thing,
When did Sam and Rosie get married and have a baby? I didn't get the impression he was a married father in FoTR. I can't remember from the book RoTK. I always thought they got together after "the big adventure". You mean he was a married dad, and just up and left with Frodo! "If he returns home to his daughter, I guess I just misunderstood it all!

I don't have the book with me right now but here's what I remember:
I think he got married after the scouring of the Shire. A mallorn seed was given him by Galadriel as a parting gift and when he planted it, the Shire became fair and bountiful and drinks made during those year were said to be of good vintage. Sam and Rosie had lots of kids too and most of the children that were born then were said to be unusually fair. Also, he already had Goldilocks, if I'm not mistaken, before he went with Frodo after so a few years to see him off in the Grey/Gray Havens. More about him and his family are found in appendix B of LOTR. He eventually sailed to the Undying Lands when his wife died of old age, I think.

You are right, Arathorn, but does this mean, in the movie, that Frodo will be in the Shire for a few years after the war of the ring? Unless Sam's been very naughty. ;) I somehow got the impression he would depart from the Grey Havens as soon as he got back to the Shire. It doesn't seem to me that PJ would stall at this point in the film.

But you know, cass,
PJ could use successive fade ins from year to year showing the Shire and the folk and the kids. One can also put in some subtitles or a narrator like Galadriel or Sam saying "many years pass...". Anyway, ROTK has to be made really really well by PJ since it'll be the last impression of the series and they''ve already made money on the first 2 for all 3 films.

Well I am totally confused!
This is one explanation I'll want to hear. Anyway,
The bit about Sam "coming home" to Rosie AND Elanor make zero sense, unless Sam knocked her up before he left and he doesn't know and finds out during the return welcome home (Hi Daddy! :) ), or she sent him word at Rivendell or something. Maybe farmer Maggot told Bombadil, who told the river water, (ha ha!) who told an elf, hmmmmpt! Makes no sense!

Allright, I've been thinking (woo hoo!) This isn't a spoiler, just my imagination. I suppose the hobbits could come back from the quest, scenes of happiness, Sam and Rosie's marriage and subsequent family. Frodo happy at first, but with "problems". Some shots of Merry and Pippen being" big men on campus".
(remember, absolutely, don't even THINK about it, There is NO scouring of the Shire! )
Then bits about Arwens mortality, conversations with Gandalf, Frodo's misery and "fading", till the decision to go to the Grey Havens is made. Gandalf, Bilbo and Frodo go, Sam goes along to say goodby, and comes back to Rose and Elanor and says "I'm back!" It could happen! :D

i think we will get a flashback style ending with probably sam comentating saying how they got back and he pulled rosie (mr frodo didnt want me) had a little baby and mr frodo leaving i think the last shot will be sam saying 'i'm back' then a long sweeping shot pulling away over the shire :D

I think he meant the movie might be longer, because in another thread someone said they read the movie is going to be 3 1/2 hours. Also, they are already advertising RotK to come out before Christmas 2003 already, so that would be a mistake to advertise that and then change it...

i expect the RotK movie to be the best
it was my fav. book and i hope it can be my fav. movie too... i just dont see how they are gonna fit all the last of the second book and the third into one movie and it still be good. i suppose that they will surprise me!
