Are you sure they were the same kind? And were they the runes like in The Hobbit or were they Tengwar from LotR? Hmmm. Oh and if you could find out what book that was that would be interesting.:)

If it's the Runes used in the Hobbit, I believe those are actually Germanic or Anglo-Saxon or something, aren't they? This sounds interesting, indeed.

Yeah, I think the runes from the Hobbit are Germanic or Anglo-Saxon or something, that's why I asked. Because if it was those, then it wouldn't really be copying LotR.

Runes of that kind you can see on Balin´s tomb are the same like German runes, but with a different meaning. The rune alphabet was called futhark ( the first letters f-u-th-a-r-k). The runes were not used like today´s letters but only to write short messages like on a tomb or to write down single magic words.

In "The Art of Warcraft" book I saw a sword with Tengwar on it. It read "surinen" or "by the wind".

Which reminds me, in the DND Quintessential Elf, there are numerous names in Elvish, and a LOT of them are direct rip-offs of Tolkien's languages.
