View Full Version : Why Rocks?

I noticed something, almost everytime you see Merry and Pippin in FOTR they are throwing rocks! In moria they throw rocks into the water, in moria they throw rocks at the troll, and when boromir is getting killed they throw rocks at uruk hai. Is this a weapon I never thought of? I mean the Uruk Hai seem pretty in pain from all those rocks! (even tho merry and pippin both have daggers...)

*throws rocks at celebriel and sees how he/she fares;) *
well i think maybe becuase they were there im sure if there were knives on the ground instead of rocks they would have been picking them up and throwing them instead...
i wouldnt like to ditch my knife (especially a nice elvish one) if they were all running at you and i think i would prefer trying to knock em down with a rock rather than run in and fight an uruk or cave troll... in the book Boromir was throwing rocks in the water aswell wasnt he hahahahahahaha what a champ..

Don't Merry and Pippin stab some Urak-hai at Amon Hen? I think it might only be in the extended edition.

Hobbits are very quick, and very lethal with rocks. If you see hobbits with rocks... run.

Exactly. What BoP said.
If I'm not mistaken Tolkien wrote somewhere in the prologue of LoTR that Hobbits were very good at throwing rocks. I don't remember the exact context but it was something like 'When the birds and beasts see a Hobbit stoop to pick up a rock they know it's best to hide quick.'
Apart from that rocks happen to be in a lot of places. More than enough ammunition when one needs it.

Yup, that's where I remember reading it. Hang on: I'll just check...
From Concerning Hobbits:
"They shot well with the bow, for they were keen-eyed and sure at the mark. Not only with bows and arrows. If any Hobbit stooped for a stone, it was well to get quickly under cover, as all trespassing beasts knew very well."

Yeah, deadly in the kitchen and on the gravel path. What I wonder is where they got them from while riding on Treebeard's shoulders. Maybe an Ent's dandruff makes for deadly sling shot.
However, if you can accept that a tree can get up and stomp around then it seems churlish to complain about some orcs getting laid low by a few stones. I think the problem is that the attempted comedy interludes were clumsy and badly timed. Apart from Gimli's line behind the parapet at Helm's Deep.

On the game ( tFotR) for Xbox etc, rocks are an unlimited weapon although they are rubish against all enemies.
