The fangirl thread in the movie forum prompted me to make this thread. cassiopiea threatened to, but then she chickened out. BoP also had a hand in this. So, ladies of the forum, who is your favorite, most loved, sexiest, coolest, guy in the Sil?

BeardofPants

I did *not* have a hand in this! This is all your making. :p

I still stand by my earlier statements that Feanor is the hottest guy of the First Age.

I was only joking! Oh, ok, I think Feanor is pretty hot. That black hair and those three pretty jewels he made (I'm sure he'd give me one of them). He's great with his hands, imagine what he could do with them. :D He had seven sons, very prolific for an elf, so he obviously enjoyed....... :p And so much fire and angst in his belly, come on gals, he's the best!

Feanor stinks! Honestly! I could never go for a guy who'd swear such a blasphemous oath!
Really now - look at Glorfindel, or Fingolfin. Even Finrod Felagund. They're all better. I haven't got that much against Feanor really, he just annoyed me in the Sil. And the Kinslaying, that was just nasty and uncalled-for.

Finwe has the rep of being the most attractive to elven ladies. So far As we know he is the only person in history to have been mated to two different evlen ladies. A person of Great charisma who in short order created an centralized monarchy amongst a fractious tribal people. Raven dark Black hair, stricking blue grey eyes. Dearly loved even by the supreme egotist, Feanor, who would abandon home and wife, and expend his sons for his pride and revenge.

Proof Feanor is hot (from the Quenta Silmarillion):
Then he died; but he had neither burial nor tomb, for so fiery was his spirit that as it sped his body fell to ash, and was borne away like smoke; and his likeness has never again appeared in Arda, neither has his spirit left the halls of Mandos. Thus ended the mightiest of the Noldor, of whose deeds came both their greatest renown and their most grievous woe.

You guys are funny!

Watch out, Coney, here comes more estrogen!

I agree with Eärniel - Tuor's hot! What a man! A great fighter, loves his wife and child with all his heart, defends his father-in-law (until the castle falls down on him), helps Ecthelion when he's wounded, helps the refugees away from Gondolin, etc. from BoLT II, The Fall of Gondolin:
...but Tuor fared home with the folk of the Wing. Now Tuor did this, thought his valour leapt to the noise of war, that he might take farewell of Idril and Eärendil, and speed them with a bodyguard down the secret way ere he returned himself to the battle throng to die if must be....yet of the leap of that axe Dramborleg that was swung by the hand of Tuor were they still more afraid, for it sang like the rush of eagle's wings in the air and took death as it fell, and five of them went down before it....Now was Tuor torn sorely between his reverence for the king and the love for Idril and his child...

Beren?? He fell asleep when he was with Melkor! Big help! (well, ok, everyone else fell asleep too, and he was quite a guy defending Lúthien from Carcharoth with nothing but his bare hands!) from The Lay of Leithian:
and Beren desperate then aside
thrust Lúthien, and forth did stride
unarmed, defenceless to defend
Tinúviel until the end.

This thread is more savage than an Elijah vs. Orlando thread! :D Educated fangirls are scary. :) I'm trying to read The Sil you know and now I keep thinking how hot Feanor is.
More quotes:
Feanor grew swiftly, as if a secret fire were kindled within him. He was tall, and fair of face, and masterful, his eyes piercingly bright and his hair raven-dark; in the pursuit of all his purposes eager and steadfast.
Seldom were the hands and mind of Feanor at rest.

Quite right. :D Where as Feänor and Finrod were kicked out of Valinor, Tuor was allowed in!

In those days Tuor felt old age creep upon him, and ever a longing for the deeps of the sea grew stronger in his heart. therefore he built a great ship, and he named it Eärramé, which is Sea-Wing; and with Idril Celebrindal he set sail into the sunset and the West, and came no more into any tale or song. But in after days it was sung that Tuor alone of Mortal Men was numbered among the elder race, and was joined with the Noldor, whom he loved; and his fate is sundered from the fate of Men.

I'm reading thru The Lay of Leithian, and got to the part where Finrod and Beren were before Thu - I had to read CRT's little commentary before I realized that the false names they gave to Thu were their own names backwards! (i.e., Nereb and Dungalef)! Did you guys realize that?

Let's see - Dornif, Ronaef, Geleb, Rout, ...

But Beren has the cooler name. I like Beleg, too

It's funny that both names means something in Dutch. :D

Beren means 'bears' (plural of bear). This is rather cool because it reminds me of scandinavian myths.

But Beleg means 'siege' which is still something I can live with but it also means something else. *sniggers* I don't know the right English translation but it's the things you put on a slice of bread or a sandwich. This might just be me but it is such an odd name for a heroic elf. *can't stop sniggering*:D

That's funny, Eärniel - I wonder how many of Tolkien's names mean something in other languages? It reminds me of the name of a car in the US - "Nova" - supposed to refer to the star explosion, but also means "Doesn't go" (no va) in Spanish! Bad name for a car!

Does Beleg mean something like "baloney" - the dubious mixture of processed meats that goes into a sandwich? "Baloney" also has two meanings in the US - it also means something that's stupid or unbelievable. That would be pretty funny to have an elf hero named "Baloney"!

"Bear" is a nice name for Beren :)

IMO, Eöl's problem was that he didn't love Aredhel. I think he only desired her, and wanted to possess her.

But even if he had married his 'true love', I think he may have been difficult to live with. Always in the dark, shunning daylight.

Was that natural for an Elf to lust?

Artanis
05-29-2003, 12:55 PM
I think it was natural for the Elves' bodies to feel lust, in the same way as hunger, thirst, weariness and so on. But compared to Men they had much more control over these feelings through their spirits.

Also I'm not sure it was lust, or lust only that made Eöl take Aredhel to his home. He thought her fair, so maybe he just wanted to possess her as a valuable gem at his hand. Or he may have known or guessed who she was, and thought it a sweet revenge to 'steal' the sister of a mighty Noldorin king. As we know, he had little love for the Noldor.

I remeber reading somewhere, that if someone took an elf by force then that elf's fea could leave the hroa because it was being violated...or something like that....I think in the published Sil, that Aredhel was lost and Eol just seduced her...the deceiver!

In the published Sil, Eöl used 'magic' to lead Aredhel to his house, but after that she stayed, at least partly willing. And it came to pass that he saw Aredhel Ar-Feiniel as she strayed among the tall trees near the borders of Nan Elmoth, a gleam of white in the dim land. Very fair she seemed to him, and he desired her; and he set his enchantments about her so that she could not find the ways out, but drew ever nearer to his dwelling in the depths of the wood. There were his smithy, and his dim halls, and such servants as he had, silent and secret as their master. And when Aredhel, weary with wandering, came at last to his doors, he revealed himself; and he welcomed her, and led her into his house. And there she remained; for Eöl took her to wife, and it was long ere any of her kin heard of her again.

It is not said that Aredhel was wholly unwilling, nor that her life in Nan Elmoth was hateful to her for many years. For though at Eöl's command she must shun the sunlight, they wandered far together under the stars or by the light of the sickle moon; or she might fare alone as she would, save that Eöl forbade her to seek the sons of Fëanor, or any others of the Noldor. And Aredhel bore to Eöl a son in the shadows of Nan Elmoth, ....

I think the rape part is in Morgoth's Ring, "Laws and customs among the Eldar", but I'm not sure of it.

All right, there it is, from Morgoth's Ring, Laws and customs among the Eldar:The Eldar wedded once only in life, and for love or at the leastby free will upon either part. Even when in after days, as the histories reveal, many of the Eldar in Middle-earth became corrupted, and their hearts darkened by the shadow that lies upon Arda, seldom is any tale told of deeds of lust among them. (5) And the corresponding note: ... But among all these evils there is no record of any among the Elves that took another's spouse by force; for this was wholly against their nature, and one so forced would have rejected bodily life and passed to Mandos.

The thought of a lot of these elves is intoxicating... but especially Fingon, Fingolfin, and even Feanor .

Why doesn't Glorfindel ride to me on a white horse and give me elvish drink, I'd take a nazgul blade for it.

I'd hang from my wrist for ages to be rescued by Fingon. :D

And what wouldn't I give for a little time in Nerdanel's place just after the marriage?

Heck, I'd probably even go for Curufin and Maeglin, being as how they are so skilled and crafty and... such. hehehe

But I have to say that on a serious note if I could have any elf I'd not be any of them.

And though I love Finrod I know he has Amarie. I think I'd go for Gildor (who seems very fun and is charming) or Pengolodh... he seem so sweet. But there are tons of others such as Voronwe... a lot of great elves.

OK, Arty, I'm afraid I'm going with Fingon - my husband has always reminded me of him. Altho his hair isn't in plaits, it's a lovely "dark hair", and he's a big strong guy who loves to help people and is the first to volunteer for tough jobs. Yes, I see what you mean - I just have a soft spot in my heart for Feanor, tho, that I don't have for the C brothers, because of the terrible murder of his father. I don't recall anything offhand particularly nice that the C brothers did. Of the 7 sons, Maedhros is much more to my liking - I really like his part in the ship-burning story - his immediate thought is of course, we're sending the ships back for my bud Fingon! and he stood aside when the ships burned.

I think Annatar reached a point where his decisions put him past redemption :( but he certainly could have turned out different, and it was a tremendous loss for him to have turned bad.

Maia belongs with Maia afterall:p
Tell that to Melian! :D

But enough seriousness! Yes, I think Fingon, altho I really like Finrod's heart, too - but I think the dark hair of Fingon decides it! :D Hmm, what's a mix of the two - Fingod, Finron?

Arty - I really admire Hurin, too - what a guy! - but somehow, Tuor's the guy I'd rather live with on a day-to-day basis. He just seemed to treasure Idril and Earendil so much, and he seemed much more passionate - just really in love with Idril. Fun! I love the account in FOG of how he would just grab her and kiss her, he loved her so much.

Hurin just seemed more distant - heck, when Morwen was dying, it was like he was chatting with a casual acquaintence :( but then again, after what he went thru, I suppose it's somewhat understandable. But I would have rather seen a more tender and loving last few minutes between the two of them. Yet even at the beginning, he seemed rather distant to her - of course, she had a bit of an attitude, like Turin.

No, I haven't changed my mind. I like Húrin because he was such a great warrior and because he showed such courage and stamina during his imprisonment by Morgoth. Tuor is great too, but he does not appeal to me like Húrin, maybe because his life is fairly easy. As for their seemingly difference in behaviour towards their wives, there is nothing indicating that Húrin was not as passionate towards Morwen before he went to the Nirnaeth. I don't think Húrin was the same man when he met Morwen again as he was when he left her all those years ago. Although being husband and wife they would probably seem like strangers to each other, both because they had been separated for so long, and because of the impact of Húrin's torment.

Of course, considering how Tuor acted towards Idril at the end of his life .... I've never understood that  , but obviously, it was just a nassssty rumor that Tolkien accidentally printed.

Still, I love all the little lines in FOG that refer to how smitten Tuor was with Idril. Tuor's the man for me!

But right now I'm in an elvish mood - take me away, Fingon!

Fingon, sweetie, ya gotta dump that Arty gal! She's 4-timin' ya! Stick with me - you won't regret it! I'm the BEST of both worlds - human and elvish. My evil twin sister naiR got the worst of both kindreds.

And in FOG he loves Idril passionately and fights like a major stud-muffin! And after the FOG he has to lead the ragged band of survivors for years. I suppose compared to Hurin's torments it was an easy life, but EVERYONE had an easy life compared to Hurin.

But that's ok - less competition for Tuor now :)

I imagine that Tuor had a happy childhood with Annael and the Grey-elves. Being rereaved of your parents when you're a toddler doesn't mar you for life. And I do think he was rather lucky compared to other main human characters in the Sil. He lived in bliss in Gondolin for many years, he had love and friendship, and the favour of Ulmo, and a great son.

Well... can't be certain, but I believe we're told that Elendil had dark hair (?? or are we??) and we know Aragorn did. I've always thought there was a strong Beoran strain among the northern line of kings... on the other hand, maybe we can't therefore conclude that they ALL had dark hair (I've always pictured Isildur as a red-head, for some reason! :D ). Maybe you should use your imagination... 'sides, YOU might like the dark hair, but some of the others around here may prefer the blondes!

Glad somebody picked up on my 'between the covers' bit! :)

Beren because he's the only man in the Silmarillion to marry the most beautiful elf in Middle Earth and beyond. Then again, this is fantasy we're talking about. Therefore, Luthien was attracted to Beren's personality. Therefore, Beren was overweight and unsymmetrical.

By the way, there's this little thing called a webcam, and another little thing called MSN. These little things can help with your voyeuristic tendencies.
