Why did they destroy the wall of Helms deep when they knew that the falling boulders would kill alot of the orcs?

Yes, the bad guys usually don't care if a few of their twisted creatures get killed.

They still blew up the wall even though it would kill several *hundred* of their orcs/uruk hai, because if they could get into Helm's Deep tha nthey could kill a lot more people/elves. It benefitted them in the long run, not harmed them.

Gun powder was known in Middle-Earth, it is the main ingredient in fireworks, Gandalf's claim to fame. It is also historical. Gun powder was first discovered in China in the 8th century and was in use in fireworks by the 10th. It did not appear in Europe until much later though.

And, presumably, being a maia of Aule, Saruman knew a lot about such things anyway...

What fun is normal gunpowder?I think that because Middle Earth isn't in our world or at least Mideaveal England gunpowder wasn't known there, so it stands to reason that possibly Sarumans explosive stuff wasn't gunpowder but some sort of material unknown to our world.
Or you could just say that the stuff Saruman used was black painted pebbles and computer graphics. ;)
Cheers,
Sam
