A Dark Beginning
"Sire!" shouted one of Thiacrese's troops from the gate. "The outer wall is breeched! Enemy soldiers are pouring in like a flood! We must flee, now!"
"No!" Thiacrese snarled in response. "We shall fight to the last man! We are surrounded by that barrows of kings! I shall die one of them, not live a coward!"
Salacor, Thiacrese's advisor, nodded quickly at his decision. "Yes, we must fight. Those vagabonds want the Hytorax, you know. The greatest magical item of your kingdom, and they want it! Theives, cowards and murderers, the lot of them!"
"They shall find nothing here but death," Thiacrese said, his voice harsh. He drew his blade as the gate quivered at the enemy battering ram. "And if need be, I shall use the Hytorax to defeat them."
"No, you cannot do that!" Salacor cried in panic. "You have not yet the skill to tap into its powers effectively!"
"The spirits of the kings still live," Thiacrese growled, clapping a hand on his councilor's shoulder and pushing him away. "If need be, I shall call on them to defend us. The Hytorax has the power to defend us, the kings of the past have bound themselves to its power. These fools cannot fight the dead."
The gate burst open and the screaming mob poured in.
"Traitors!" Thiacrese screamed as he launched himself into them. His men pushed the rabble back, but there were too many.
"DIE!" He chopped the head off of the nearest one and kicked the body aside. Turning to the next, he clove the shield that barred his way in two and continued with a second blow that pierced his opponent's helmet and dropped him dead on the floor.
"DIE, TRAITORS!"
"The last king of old," Salacor hissed to himself as he drew his own blade- a weapon forged in the dark chambers of the Necromancer. "He is like his fathers. Strong, yet sooo weak."
Two of Thiacrese's soldiers fell to enemy spears, and a third was taken out by an arrow from an archer Salacor hadn't noticed. The archer lined his next arrow up at Salacor's neck at let loose.
Salacor's sword shattered the arrow as he blocked it in flight. Quickly, he turned back to the king, just in time to see a sword catch him in the head and throw him to the ground.
Salacor ran to the man's side. "Sire! Are you all right?"
Thiacrese seized him by the throat and pulled himself up, ignoring the blood that poured down over his face from the wound on his scalp.
"Let me use the Hytorax for you," Salacor begged Thiacrese. "Your troops are dead! We cannot survive!"
"I shall kill them myself!" Thiacrese raved.
"You cannot, sire! You cannot kill so many alone!"
His words finally got through to Thiacrese, and he turned back toward Salacor. "Very well, then."
A ruthless smile crossed his lips, as he seized his councilor's arm and ran with him up the stairs of the keep, leaving the last of his soldiers to die without him.
The cries of the mob were heard below, as they pursued.
Salacor slammed the door shut and bolted it as they reached the topmost tower. Thiacrese ran to the back of the room, whipped the covering off of the emerald gem, the Hytorax, and placed his hand on it.
The battle ended. The war ended, and a quiet that had not been known before came upon the land. The tumult was over- for good. No more children cried, and no more mothers or wives wept. No soldiers chose whose allegiance they should belong to in that land any more.
This was because they were all dead, lying quietly in the ground.
An emerald green light entered the barrows beneath the earth, and darkness fell upon that land like a heavy, silent shroud.

This was a good day, Hruad Thunoth thought to himself as he looked up at the sky. After glancing about himself to make sure that no one would be watching, he stretched. Stretching was not dignified for anyone in court, but representatives had a larger responsibility.
Sometimes, Hruad wished he could have the freedom that his friend, Bushbark had. Bushbark was his only friend outside of court or home. Those at court were all more of associates then friends, and those at home were there- at home. Bushbark probably had his roots deep in the soil right now and was just soaking in the energy from the sunlight.
Hruad smiled for a moment as he headed up the path. For this moment, he could forget the troubles that surrounded him. He could forget that the king was ailing and that his councilors were gaining power, and he could forget the uncertainties in the kingdom at the changes. The only good news that had been received, recently, that Athalt Cranain had successfully completed his campaign against the wild men of the Dunland. Their country of Enedwaith had been becoming a more dangerous place by far. With the king ailing and the increasing threat, the peole of Enedwaith had been fearing that the borderlands would be lost altogether.
Athalt was returning now as a hero, and it would be pleasing to meet the young man in person.
The people of Enedwaith had, for many years been always accustomed to meeting strange peoples and races, and their land had a spattering of these throughout. Theirs was one of the only lands that had encountered the strange "Hobbits", as they called themselves, and still believed in the ents. This was because a few had been met here, which had chosen to repopulate after the great search of the ents for the entwives. There were good trees here that could be awoken, they said, and had proceeded to take the responsibility of shepherding the Huorns of these parts.
Hruad mounted his horse and turned the bridle toward the forest on the outskirts of Néred, the capitol of Enedwaith, and the place where he spent most of his time.
Spurring his horse onward, he rode out, looking forward to a chat with his "hasty" friend.

I walked through Fangorn, plodding along as I went, making an awful ruckas in the forest.
My name was BoulderHead, I was an Ontor. A very close relative of The Ents. Ents were made of Trees and I was made out of Rock and boulders, that is why I am called Boulderhead. I plodded along, taking no notice of what I might be standing on. I was a very young Ontor, and today I was heading towards my friend BushBark's House.

As Hruad approached the "house" of the ent, he looked up in surprise as a shadow fell over him.
He caught a brief glimpse of a strange light sandy brown object, and then its foot was coming down.
"Root of the earth!" Hruad muttered in amazement as his horse screamed and bore him out of the way.
The foot came down where he had been a moment before.
Hruad drew his sword, but knew that it would be little avail as he looked more closely at the creature. "STOP!"
The creature hesitated in surprise, and slowly looked about it. Its eyes focused on him and widened slightly. "Human? What are you doing here?"
Then Bushbark was striding swiftly out of the trees, to join them, Hruad noted in relief.

Elise sighed and rubbed her forehead. Why in Eru's name must she tramp across the whole of Middle Earth just to find one little stone?
Well there was no time to contemplate that. She had a job to do and she would do it. Even if it was self imposed.
"Igenae'a, torolooth sen ach neah siv ratoh atha" she murmured, "There is no job that cannot be done if the will is strong." An old language and saying. Very old.
Aldeb, her mare, sniffled Elise's shoulder and gave a soft neigh, agreeing completely.
"It has been some time sense either of us were young," Elise said and patted her horse's head. "But that is to the good as both our wills are stronger now. At least I should hope so."
Aldeb nodded her head and Elise laughed. But her eyes seemed to pierce earth as the flickered from side to side. Always searching.
The sunset in golden glory, covering the sky in flame for a few moments and then sinking away slowly as the stars sprang to life in the sky. A glorious end to a damp day that had almost begged for rain. Thankfully it had not rained. Yet.
But death whispered that night. No, it screamed. It screamed for Elise's soul and whipped it's self into a frenzy for the wrights had known of Elise's coming for some time. And they knew what she looked for.
An old piece of jewelry that had been hers once and then again before it was lost from her sight. But now she wanted it back. It had memories that were worth keeping. And worth the fight she knew she would have to face.
Hungry fire licked at the sticks and branches that Elise threw on it, crackling and popping away.
"Aye, you eat now so that I may eat later." Elise said, her gray eyes gazing into the fire and also at the pot of stew she was stirring. Stewed rabbit always did taste extra good after a hard days journey.
And then Elise's head jerked up as a keen wail began, the sound of the barrows, so close but not close enough to hurt Elise, though Aldeb screamed and reared, her eyes rolling in her head as the chant touched her soul with it's power.
"You shall not bring your death to my camp!" Elise cried out into the night, standing firm and resolute.
"Stop this dirge now or you shall taste elvish song! I am no ordinary old woman as you well know!"
The only answer was a scream and the wail continued, piercing and throbbing.
Elise muttered a curse and grabbed at Aldeb's harness, trying to settle the mare as she wracked her brains for an elvish song that would do as she needed.
Then it came to her, just the song she needed and she began to sing it in a clear and high voice, a voice that could be heard for miles around.
It was a haunting tune, but beautiful as the stars that burned in the sky, and as battering ram would strike a gate, so Elise's song smashed through the sounds of the barrow and struck home to the wraiths that lived within.
The wails changed pitch and became those of pain, for death cannot stand in the sun or listen to what is good and beautiful for long.
"Ah, I have not sung that for... Well... A long time." Elise said softly as the last notes hung and echoed through the downs, driving away the foul spirits.
Tomorrow would bring the sun. Tomorrow she would search the downs and find what she wanted.
But tonight she needed rest. And food. Elise most sincerely hoped the stew hadn't burnt or over cooked while she was singing. If it had she would personally hunt down every wraith and make it eat the stew.
Fortunately for the wraiths, Elise wasn't so unkind that she would feed anything that tasted like that stew to even the Dark lord himself.
No, hard bread and cheese was NOT a very good substitute for rabbit stew.
And so feeling rather mournful and empty of belly, Elise rolled up in her cloak and slept.

Hruad couldn't quite conceal his astonishment. He had come here to visit, been nearly crushed, and now the two were chatting like old friends, ignoring him completely. I can't go off investigating things like that, though I'm glad that my reliable friend will, with his boulder footed comrade.
"Lucky thing indeed that I came when I did. But if you both are planning to be off, I'd best be heading back towards the court as well. There's only one thing . . ."
Bushbark raised his leafy eyebrows curiously. "Yes?"
Hruad grinned. "I'd like a draft of Entwash, before I go."
Bushbark boomed out a deep, rolling laugh, and turned around. "Unfortunately, our influence is still weak over this river, so it is still mostly natural. This won't keep you green and growing, like the old forest of Fangorn. It takes us a lot of it to feed us, as yet. But that will change. Give my folk a few more weeks, and we'll have it every bit as filling and tasty as the river through Fangorn."

A sandcoloured mare leisurely walked the lands. Its rider, a young woman from the Rohirrim patted its neck kindly. "You like traveling like this, don't you Merrah? I hope you didn't mind leaving the green plains of Rohan behind like that." The meara snorted, but whether that was a yes or a no was impossible to tell. Imarwyn sniggered. "You're probably right, but still, we're a long way off from our goal."
She looked behind her where the gap of Rohan lay. She had crossed the river Isen now two days ago and had since then traveled unfamiliar country. Not that she cared that much for it. Her trust was in Merrah and the mare had never let her down before. And Enedwaith held the promise of work, especially now with their border disputes with Dunland. "...and right now, we're close to those borders, Merrah. So have a care where you step, if you will. I don't want to end up in the middle of a battle."
Merrah neighed softly. Imarwyn laughed. "Oh, do you think I talk too much?" Despite the fact that Merrah came from a good line, Imarwyn doubted that the meara understood much of what she said. Still, she took pleasure in talking to the mare as if it understood her and replied.
Early in the evening Imarwyn found a decent spot to spend the night. After unloading Merrah and grooming her, Imarwyn made herself a simple cold meal. Suddenly Merrah became restless and Imarwyn tensed. "What is it, Merrah?" she whispered. The meara stood erect, it's eyes fixed on some spot in the distance, its nostrils flaring. Now Imarwyn too smelled smoke. She looked in the direction Merrah was staring and noticed several little flickering lights not too close, but not too far away either. She patted Merrah in her flanks. "Easy, girl. Stay here. I'll check whether it's friend or foe. I'd hate to wake up in the morning with my throath cut." After checking whether her two knives were securely in her belt Imarwyn carefully crept closer to the campfire lights.

Intro to my character in fellowship like no other.
Adrian stood in her room at Bag End checking to make sure she had everything. She had been planing to leave and join the Rangers for quite some time. Ever since they had asked her. Sam had his suspicions. Frodo as a last wish had asked Sam to watch out for his "Baby Sis" even though she was older than Sam she was just so irrisponsible sometimes. Although most of the time she was more responsible than Sam or Frodo. Picking up her pack she reminded herself that she would come back to visit sometimes and that this was her idea and that she really wanted another adventure. "Bye Sam, bye everybody. See yah Merry, see yah Pippin, come on Swift," she called as she ran off down the road before they could have the chance to stop her. when she was sure they had no chance of catching up to her she slowed down and walked to the bar that she was going to go to for a quick drink almost forgetting that her wolf was with her till he nosed her hand. "Come on Swift, lets go in."

My thoughts were interupted again as another hobbit entered the room and shivered as he to dragged in a wolf just as large as the first. The dawn broke over the barrows, pale and clear, pushing shadows away and forcing the wraiths back.
Elise sat beside the still glowing embers of the nights fire, her long white hair flipped over her shoulder as she combed it and then remade it into the perfect bun it had taken her so many years to master.
The stew from last night still sat in the little pot and Elise wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Digging a hole and putting the stew in it would be beyond Elise, but she couldn’t just dump it on the ground. Or maybe she could.
With a little sigh and a roll of her eyes, Elise extinguished the last glow of the fire with the stew. What a waste of good rabbit.
With another sigh, Elise broke out some more bread and cheese and broke her fast with that. Tea was out of the question for the morning had a brooding feeling and Elise was sure she didn’t want to attract any attention right now. There was evil near by and it wasn’t simply the barrow downs.
***
Elise entered a barrow, the fifth since this morning and she was beginning to tire. And the nagging feeling of another evil hadn’t left. It was only stronger.
But there! Half hidden in the barrow’s treasure, there was a gleam of green fire and polished silver as Elise’s light bounced off it.
Not quite scrambling, Elise reached the spot quickly and pulled her prize out from underneath one of the most beautiful circlets ever made in middle earth, but she ignored the circlet. The barrows could keep their gold, but they could not keep her jewel.
Narselin had been his name. A mortal human she had loved and who had loved her for the short span of his life. No human lived long, but Narselin’s passing had been bitter even though he lived much longer than any normal human.
As Elise left the barrow she put on the necklace and allowed a few tears to fall from her eyes.
Narselin had given Elise the necklace. And to her it was worth more than all the gold the barrow’s held and more.
So caught up in her though was Elise, the orcish arrow only missed her thanks to the orcs poor aim.
Elise whirled and saw the orc draw another arrow.

Touching the Orc’s corpse was…Distaistful. But Elise saw something on the orc’s armor that put a worry in her mind.
A flame, red as blood, stood out on the orc’s breastplate and there was a tattoo of the same flame on his mutilated arm.
The note she found on its body replaced her worry with a fear that was almost terror.
“Narashgul,
My master has raised you above all other orcs. Given you knowledge and a mind that no other orc ever had.
Your task is one of great importance. Find a green stone, a hand tall or a little taller, and bring it back to me.
If you return without it, your soul shall scream for all the ages of Middle Earth.
There are others searching for the stone. Some are with us, but some for the cursed Blue Flame. If you find any that are with the Blue Flame, slay them.”
And below, there was a picture of the stone. A stone Elise had hoped would never be even thought of again.
The Hytorax.
***
Elise grabbed Aldeb’s mane and jumped onto to horses back with a spryness fit for a child of ten.
“Aldeb, we must find the nearest city and report this to the king. The Hytorax is being searched for.”
Aldeb reared and pawed the air for a moment before she leapt forward and began to run so fast she almost seemed to fly.

Three days had they run, with little sleep for mistress or horse. But run they did, and fueled by fear, they found all the energy they needed.
And then it came in sigh, a city.
Elise’s horse flew through the city gates and making a sharp turn, stopped in front of one of the guards.
“Where is your King?” Snapped Elise.
“Who are you and why do you-”
“Now!” Elise snapped, fixing her eyes firmly on the guard and drawing her self up, seeming larger for a second.
“T-th-that way!” The guard stammered, backing into the wall.
Aldeb leapt out the way the man’s finger pointed and Elise seemed to shrink back to her normal size. Just a little old woman… She certainly hadn’t been any larger than before.
It took a little time, but Elise finally bullied, pushed and glared her way into the king’s chamber, leaving a wake of frightened servants behind her.
“Who are you, old woman?” the King asked, sitting straighter in his throne and eyeing Elise up and down. Taking in her dirty robe at a glance.
“I, am Elise To’nonath, my lord.” Elise said, her manner stately as she pulled off her drab robe to revel a dark green dress worthy of a court lady, her newly found jewel hanging around her neck and swinging slightly as she stepped forward.
Her distance of greeting had been as a peasant might greet his lord, but her stepping forward placed her as close to the king as an almost equal might stand.
There was a man standing beside the king and Elise locked eyes with him for a split second, making him lean back a little. A brave man as her look would have sent most running.
“I bring you a message of great importance and would speak with you in private, my lord.” Elise said, her voice quiet and firm. Almost commanding.
“This is Hurad, he may hear whatever you might have to say.” The king replied, his voice just as quiet but definitely a command.
Elise shrugged, her eyes had been moving about, taking in everything around her. But now she turned her gaze fully on the king and told him of the orc and the note.
The king eyed her again as she spoke of the orc as living one second and then as of being dead the next. This woman killed an orc? But her eyes spoke the truth. And the truth was what he did not want to hear.

His drink was delivered to the table by the bar tender who asked"Is there anything I can get you Lady Ranger in training?" he asked wispering the last part about me and my title. "No," I told him flatly and he walked away. "Who are you?"I asked the hobbit who had seated hisself at my table. When he did not reply I got up and knocked the table over spilling his drink and mine along with it."I ASKED YOU A QUESTION NOW ANSWER IT. DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" He gave me a blank look and shook his head just as the bar tender rushed over trying to sit the table upright and exclaiming, "Calm down now, Calm down!" But I could not calm down. This smug hobbit lad had enraged me and unleashed my fury and I was not easily calmed down.Swift was joining the fight.(refer back to list of names in the flno)

"The Red Flame?" King Vahatres mused. "That was the insignia?"
"You know it?" Elise pressed.
"I have heard of it," Vahatres said smoothly.
"This note was on the body," Elise continued, passing him the paper. "They are searching for a stone, a magical item of ancient evil, called the Hytorax."
"That I haven't heard of."
"It was possessed last by a long dead barbarian king- I can't recall his name at the moment. It was through him that darkness fell upon the Barrow Downs."
"What are these Barrow Downs?" Vahatres asked irritably. "Are they a part of my kingdom?"
"No, they are near the Shire, in Eriador."
"Then they are out of my jurisdiction. These are matters for the folk of that region. I am busy right now- as a matter of a fact, you are holding me up for a council that I must hold with other representatives of the provinces that make up Enedwaith."
Elise, with difficulty suppressed her annoyance. Her trip here had taken several weeks, and this king didn't appear willing to do anything about it. The halflings of the Shire certainly couldn't do a thing. Tom Bombadil was out of the question, and the only other one that did have power and was even remotely close to that area was Elrond at Rivendell. And would he send elves to the Barrow Downs? A haunted place far out of his domain, the spirits of which had claimed the lives of the entire population that had once lived there? On the basis of one orc with a strange insignia. There would be little help from that area.
The man behind the king looked a little sympathetic, anyway, but it wasn't likely that he could do anything.
Vahatres stood up, a small expression of pain crossing his face, and walked over toward the door. "Come, Hruad! The council waits."
Hruad turned to Elise briefly. "Wait in the parlor outside," he told her. "I'll talk to you further about this after the council meeting."

Asaar peered out from the kitchen, he thought he heard shouting and he was right.
A lady and her... WOLF?! were facing down a poor little hobbit. Asaar sudenly wished that he had worn his long knives but he couldn't just leave the hobbit.
"Now then! Stop this!" Asaar said forcefuly, steping infront of the woman, his normaly merry eyes were grave and he kept half his attention on the wolf.
The woman took a step forward to push him aside, a small dagger was suddenly in Asaar's hand and he took a step back, out of her arm reach.
"None of this!" he snapped "Calm down or leave now!"
The woman looked angry, but she sat back down and Asaar breathed a sigh of relief, she looked fierce.
Asaar twirled his little dagger unthinkingly and slid it back up his sleeve, he had learned that from an elf who passed through the town once.
"I'm sorry, sir" He said and turned to the hobbit, "Perhaps you would preffer a seat over there?" and he turned to point to a table farther away.

A hand clasped onto Imarwyn's shoulder and she twisted around quickly, one hand dropping to the hilt of one of her long knives while the other slapped his hand off of her.
He took a step back and drew his sword. "Don't move," he warned her, and she saw that resisting would be unavailing. A couple of the guards down below were already coming up anyway. Reluctantly, she released the handles of her daggers.
"We must take you to our captain," the sentry told her quietly.
"Come in," the voice from inside called in response to the sentry's statement.
The guard pushed open the flap of the tent and led Imarwyn inside. The room was fairly spacious. A bed lay at one side, and a man was sitting on a chair at a table. A candle was lit, and by its light he was reading a paper.
"We found this woman on the edge of our camp, spying on us," the guard told him.
He looked up and glanced at her briefly.
"You may go," he told the guard. "Get back to your position."
The soldier hesitated for a moment, then bowed and left.
The man at the table turned back to his parchment. After a couple seconds, he spoke again. "So were you spying?"
"No. I saw torches and decided to see who was approaching."
"Where do you live?" he continued.

Hurad turned to Elise briefly. "Wait in the parlor outside," he told her. "I'll talk to you further about this after the council meeting."
Elise nodded, the man looked fairly capable. She swirled and left, wandering if she could find the stone herself.
If this king wouldn't help, and Hurad only wished to find out if she knew any thing else, she would have to find the Hytorax herself, there was no choice.
Elise grabbed her robe and put it back on, hiding her fine dress from sight and bending over slightly.
When she left the room, she was only another old woman standing around waiting.

Imarwyn studied the man before her before she made her reply. It was obvious that this was the commander of the soldiers she had seen stationed outside. They must have been damn good soldiers, otherwise they wouldn't have spotted her that easily. That or she was really losing her touch but she didn't think so. Yet these men didn't look like Dunlanders so normally they wouldn't harm her if she could convince them that she posed no threat. Normally....
This man however would probably know immediately if she was lying or not. Not that she was planning on testing, it would have been a stupid thing to do in her current position.
"I come from Rohan." she replied at last.
The man before her nodded, he had already figured out the obvious.
"And you?" she asked casually.
A look passed over his face but it passed too quickly for Imarwyn to determine what it was. Was it amusement? Or anger? She suddenly missed the familiar feeling of the two knives in her belt.

The damage isn't much and I understand and after all you have been through, I mean going with your brother all the way to Mordor and seeing him turn into basically a nervous wreck, which is understandable concerning the evil he had to carry," he told me and turned to the young lad, "Would you like a room as well?" "Yes for my sister and I." he said as a young girl came in from the stables, "My name is Fred and I am seeing my sister off. Her name is Belladonna."

The new traveler sat down in a seat nearest to the fire next to the first hobbit. I brought him some ale and water for his pet wolf and watched tensley as the the first hobbit asked of his name or title. at first he did not answer which made the hobbit angry and knock the table over in rage.
Argh! Why now?
I hurrid over and uprighted the table but had to back of as soon as the hobbit raised herself up and took out her knife threateningly.
To my great releif Asaar came out and stoped the two from their quarrel(sp). I sighed.

"What is a rager hobbit doing here?" I asked the female hobbit.
"I mean if its not to much of a personal question."

"The people of Rohan have always been friends of our country," the man said. "And their warriors treasure their horses above virtually anything. You must be highly skilled."
"I do my best."
"That is not the point." He laid the scroll down on the desk and stood up. "But there is an easy way to ascertain the truth of what you say. Follow me."
He walked past Imarwyn and led her out of the tent. They passed a couple campfires surrounded by men, and approached the horses she had seen earlier. He walked past them though, however, until he reached the end of the line. There, another horse was tied. It was coal black, and still wore a torn bridle about its neck. Its eyes flicked toward them as they approached, and it appraised them distrustfully.
"We come fresh from the borders of Dunland," the man said, "where we fought the wildmen of that country. Few of their ordinary fighters ride horses, but many of their leaders do. The rider of this horse was killed, and the beast has allowed no other to touch him since we took it from the battlefield.
"If you are a horse trainer of Rohan, then perhaps you can change this? He nearly broke the leg of one of my soldiers," he said, looking into her eyes. "I wish you luck with him."

"Yes Swift, I know this is not what we planned, but we didn't plan to leave during a rain storm that would possibly turn to snow. Besides I think this was ment to happen I think we need a companion who would be willing to go with me to Gondor and join me on my training. It would make it easier on me. Not being alone, not that I am alone I just want someone around the age I look to talk to. I mean talking to you is nice Swift I just want someone to talk back." Imarwyn studied the black horse. It was obviously nervous, its eyes were large and flickered. "Very well, I accept your challenge." Imarwyn told the commander. The man nodded and left her with the horse. The guards however, remained but Imarwyn took no notice of them. She sat down a few feet before the horse so it could see her. It now had her undivided attention and she had his.
After a long time Imarwyn stood up slowly and approached the horse. It watched her approach but when she had come close enough to touch it and extended her hand, it reared and it hooves hit the ground with a resounding thud. Imarwyn retreated and took her place on the ground again. As morning approached she rose again and went to the horse anew, this time she made soft neighing sounds. The horse looked at her strangely and stepped back as far as its bonds would allow. Imarwyn stopped before it and slowly extended her hand to its head. It sniffed her hand uncertainly but made no attempt to bite her. As she had held her one hand in front of the horse she stepped sideways and reached with her other hand for the headgear; her hand slowly closed around it. She stepped closer to the horse and spoke to it softly.
But as she reached for the torn bridle the horse tore loose and Imarwyn stumbled back hastily to avoid being hit. One of the guards laughed but Imarwyn was pleased with her progress. "Laugh if you must but the horse trusts me now. It will not allow me to ride it yet but I can touch it now without fearing it'll kick me. So I think I've proven enough. Isn't it about time you'd inform your commander?" One of the guards left.

A large group of people was slowly making its way out of the council chamber, talking to each other as they went. Few of them seemed happy.
"Those land barons should be happy, anyway," a man named Dolais remarked irritably.
"No, not even them," Hruad said. "The power Vahatres seems to be sucking away from the regions isn't all going to them, though it might seem to on the surface. See, just look at them, they don't seem to be too happy."
He motioned with his hand to the group of fancily dressed fat men that were standing at the other side of the council chamber, arguing amongst themselves.
"They may seem to be getting a great deal, but they're under worse pains than us. They have to have the king's representative with them whenever they make important decisions, and have to consult him before acting."
"Consult him," Dolais said pointedly. "What's so wrong about that?"
"Perhaps you didn't notice," Hruad said, "but there was a strong emphasis upon their accepting his advice. There was also an implied threat there. Remember he said 'these new developments could help shape the course of our future. New times are coming and the old ways must be abandoned. And woe to those who stand in the way of progress.'
"He laughed at the end of that statement, but he was looking at the land barons as he said it, and the words hung in the air."
"You wax almost poetical," Dolais said wryly.
"I'm a representative," Hruad told him. "I have had time to wax eloquent, if that's what you mean."
Dolais laughed. "Well, you might be right. I'll have to definitely keep a closer eye on the king after this. It appears this is only the beginning of these 'new times,' and he has other changes in mind. Besides the stripping of all power from the people that he is doing now."
"We'd best inform our separate region comittees," Hruad said. "I'll be seeing you later."
"Luckily, it'll be another two weeks before the next Prime Council," Dolais remarked. "Talk to you more later."
He turned and headed off down the hall. Hruad opened the door to the king's parlor and started down it, on the way to his own quarters. He had just walked past an old woman, when he froze in his tracks, remembering her face.
He turned around. "I'm so sorry, I'd almost forgotten about you. Tough meeting. What were we talking about?"
"An orc scout at the Barrow Downs," she said.
"Ah yes," Hruad said, slowly remembering. "Come right this way please."
He led her across the parlor to his own quarters. Once they entered the room, he motioned her to a sofa across a table from a chair, and then he sat down upon the chair.
Hruad spoke first. "I wanted to ask you questions on things that weren't completely plain to me. Did you kill that orc yourself? And do you know anything else about the Red Flame?"
"Have you brought me here only to answer questions?" Elise asked quietly.
"I can tell you what we know about the Red Flame," Hruad told her. "Plainly this event was important to you, and do I guess rightly that you plan to follow through with some other investigation plan?"
She gave him an enigmatical smile.
"Well, you answer my questions, and I'll talk to you about what I know," Hruad said, settling back to listen.

Elise eyed Hurad and pondered for a moment, she hadn’t told any mortal of her powers for a long time. But this man would surely know a lie if he heard one… What to say?
“I have a horse with me. She is loyal to me and knew I was in danger...” There, unless this man thought as an elf instead of a human he would surely assume that the horse…
“But how did you kill the orc?” Hurad asked, arching an eyebrow and leaning forward.
Elise sighed. Well… Perhaps he would be more willing to help if he knew.
“I have some small… Powers.” There, she had said it.
Hurad nodded. “And do you know anything of the Red Flame?” he pressed.
“Only the rumors and old stories told around fires. I my self assumed that they had been broken up hundreds of years ago and would cause little to no more bother.”
Hurad said nothing, simply giving her a piercing look.
With a sigh of defeat, Elise settled back in the sofa.
“I will tell you all that I know of the Red Flame and it’s breaking.” Elise said. She had played a very small part in it herself, small enough that she could easily leave it out.
***
“And that is all I know. Except that they must be rising again.” Elise finished, almost an hour later, as the tale wound to an end.
Hurad leaned back in his chair and flexed his head from side to side. At some point in the story he had leaned forward and now he had a neck ach.
“Well… That was all and more I could ever have wanted to know. So you say that they are made up of Isitary? They must be a force to recon with indeed… And they seek the Hytorax?”
“Yes, they are Isitary, a sort of angel in human form. They are indeed powerful. And as for seeking the Hytorax… Well, not only do I have the note, but also it is the sort of thing the Red Flame would do. They want only destruction, and what better to use than the Hytorax?” Elise leaned forward intently. This was it, either he would help her, or she would have to see to it he never remembered her passing. A shame for such a man as he was, but if he wouldn’t help her, he had no business knowing about her or the flame.
“Will you aid me?” Elise asked, locking her eyes with his and setting her full gaze to bear. “You must have some idea of what they could do with the Hytorax, they must be stopped. And stopped quickly.”

Imarwyn quickly placed the knives in her belt. She looked at the black horse again, it would make a fine war horse. Her lips curled up in a small smile, this might turn out to be not such a bad night afterall.
"Train... Ruafus so that he'll accept a rider and is fit to bear him into battle?" she asked. The man nodded. "Aye, then." replied Imarwyn. "I will train him. But I cannot work miracles. It'll doubtlessly take more than one night." she warned him.

Yes, Asaar will be coming along. Must have some one to provoke Elise ;).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Asaar stepped out from behind a tree and stopped Gil, his eyes merrily twinkling and a steaming pie in his hands. Instinctively Gil ducked, but this time she was not his target.
“A customer ordered a pie but then left without it Gil! C’mon, lets go find the Sackvills! I need to get even with them for that insult they called out after me last time.” Asaar laughed, helping Gil to her feet and brushing a leaf off her shoulder.
“Not now Asaar.” Gil said sadly. “I’m leaving, sorry. I hope you have fun and… And everything. Good bye.”
Gil pushed around Asaar and made her way towards the horse again.
Dropping the pie, Asaar whirled and watched her for a second. Leaving? Good BYE?!
Without thinking, Asaar yelled after her, “I’m coming to!!”
With a sigh, Gil turned and walked back to him. “Asaar,” she began, talking slowly as she would to a very silly little child.
“You know my mother and father will need some one to watch over the inn. If I’m leaving then you will be their only help. Besides, I’m going to become a ranger. You don’t want to be a ranger, do you?”
Asaar smiled down at her as he always did when she talked that way. It seemed to make her mad so he naturally did it when he was annoyed.
“Don’t need ranger training.” Asaar grinned, flipping one of his little knives out and twirling it at a blurring speed before twisting at the waist and throwing it, pinning a rather startled horse’s reign to a hitching post. Showing off was always fun when he was Annoyed too.
Gil sighed, he had already shown her his skill with his daggers and she had watched him practice. Helping him bandage his fingers whenever he tried something new and it didn’t quite work.
“Fine.” Asaar said sulkily when she just stared at him. “Which way are you going?”
“I really couldn’t say.” Gil said peevishly. Why must he make this so hard?
“Really?” Asaar said in mock surprise, as if she has actually stated a direction. “Why, I’m going that way too. Farewell for now.” And he spun on his heel and stalked back to the inn, snagging his knife on the way and just dodging the annoyed horse’s snap.
***
A day had passed and Asaar could still easily follow the trail of the two girls. Gil must have assumed that he had been joking about following. Hah! Joke about following his best friend who was leaving.
It had been hard to convince her parents to let him go, but not too hard because they almost seemed relieved that some one with his knife skills would go with her. He had showed off for them too.
Behind him stamped a large workhorse, it’s back was higher than Asaar’s head and wider across than Asaar could comfortably sit so Asaar mostly just walked.
The two long knives, elvish make although he didn’t know it, hung at Asaar’s hips and they felt like they shouldn’t be there due to Asaar’s hardly wearing them. He only practiced with them and then put them away again.
If the two ‘women’ found him, so what? He was a free man… Well… Yes, man. Old enough to take care of himself so he was clearly a man, wasn’t he? But man or boy, he could go where he liked and it would take more than two little hobbits to stop him!
The man's lips momentarily curved upward in a small smile. "I expected as much," he told her. "You can work on it during the evenings. We have a few days yet before we reach Néred."
"The capitol of Enedwaith?" Imarwyn asked curiously.
"Correct.
"Well, if you are to be in my employ, we had best be introduced then."
"My name is Imarwyn," she told him.
"And mine is Athalt Cranain," he said. "You worked hard last night, without pay. We're about to break camp, so unfortunately I cannot offer you rest. I would offer you breakfast, but you probably will want to go and get your own horse now."
He pointed out to her a nearby campfire. "You can eat there, once you've gotten your horse. Will you be ready in an hour?"
"Yes."
"Good. I'll be seeing you more later, then." He inclined his head to her, and strode away toward the front.
"So you say the Hytorax is used for destruction?" Hruad asked inquisitively.
"Yes, or at least that is one of its primary purposes. Remember, I told you that it was the Hytorax that brought about the death of everyone in the territory that is now the Barrow Downs."
"I was told that spirits haunt that territory. Did the Hytorax create these spirits of death?"
Elise frowned for a moment. "I don't know precisely."
"Then it might simply be an item that has a strong link to the spirit realm," Hruad continued his train of thought. "If that is the case, then it could be that they are attempting to gain it for other purposes than war."
"What are you getting at?"
"I'll tell you what I know of the Red Flame," Hruad told her. "Emissaries from it came to King Vahatres a month ago, and he has been entertaining them since then at court. He knows things of the Red Flame that I don't know, and perhaps he knew of their military strength. It is possible that he is planning to form an alliance with them.
"The king has been acting . . . strangely . . . for the last half year. He has been having dealings with orcs of various groups, and strange folk have been coming into the court at his leave and keeping company with him. He has been working at dissolving the traditional rights of the people and taking control of our lands with military strength. New and harsher laws have been being introduced . . ." Hruad's face broke for a moment and Elise saw pain beneath the politician's facade.
"I don't know how much of this is the Red Flame's fault," Hruad said quietly. "But our country is falling steadily into a mire, and this Hytorax seems to me to be irrelevant next to the oppression that I fear is only beginning. I don't know what we can do."
Imarwyn momentarily left the soldier's camp to collect her horse and her belongings. Merrah was where she had left her the night before. "Good morning, Merrah. Slept well tonight?" Imarwyn greeted her horse which neighed in return. "Well, I'm glad someone did. And I see you've finished off my last-night dinner too." she remarked seeing the plate she had left the night before, now empty.
Imarwyn patted Merrah's flanks. "I've got good news, girl. I've found work and a pretty horse it is too. I bet you'll like him." She quickly gathered her things and bound them in a pack which she placed on Merrah's back. Afterwards she led the meara to the soldier's camp so she could catch a quick breakfast before the company broke up.
The day wore on, and the sun beat down upon the troop of soldiers. They paused for a short bite of food, and then half an hour later were off again. The horses were strong, and the carts of provisions and equipment at the back of the train didn't slow them down much. Imarwyn's own horse Merrah wasn't tired by the trip.
As evening darkened the sky, the soldiers stopped again and pitched the tents. Brush was sought for and campfires prepared. Cooks brought out the food and set to work as the soldiers sat down, chatting amongst themselves.
Imarwyn knew that as she was probably the only woman in the camp, she would probably attract unwanted attention by going out among them. And she was tired.
She stroked Merrah's mane gently as she sat back in the shadows, leaning against the wheel of a cart as she ate from her plate of food.
Suddenly she noticed that Athalt was standing next to her.
"I have ordered a new tent erected for you," he told her. "I'm counting last night's effort with Ruafus on your part to count as two, so you have tonight off."
The days passed slowly, and Néred drew closer. The population had heard much of the approaching soldiers, who were now counted among the heroes of the country.
"You'll probably be a hero too," Athalt told Imarwyn one evening, when he had come to check her progress with Ruafus. "Our whole troop will be, I am told. People will wonder, does she have any skill with those long knives? What part did she play in the battles at Dunland?"
"Not a very large one, I'm afraid. But I wouldn't carry these weapons if I had no skill with them."
"I'm glad to hear that," he said. "You are among soldiers, and it is good to hear that you can defend yourself."
"From them, or from enemies you are out to combat?"
"Both, if necessary. But there shouldn't be any battle for some time, anyway. Peace has been forcibly established along the Dunland border, and I know of no other threat to our kingdom."
The week was over, and as Néred drew closer yet, the soldiers began to get excited. More and more talk spread among them as to the reception, and what they would do. Most of the soldiers seemed to be planning to hit the taverns upon reaching the place, though some of them had wives and families in Néred.
Several of the soldiers asked Imarwyn frankly why she was here, and she answered them truthfully. Some of them appeared doubtful, and though at first perplexed by this, Imarwyn soon guessed that it was because of the strange way their captain was paying so much attention to her. Could it possibly be simple interest in Ruafus, the wild horse?
But then the city was only two days away, and this topic for idle curiosity was dropped.
*That probably bring us (on that plot thread) basically up to date. Hruad and Elise are probably having their conversation now, and for them it is probably two days till they meet the incoming soldiers as well.*
ic: As I returned with the half starved pony I was met by Asaar. He questioned my departure which made me remember how depressing it would be to leave him. For he was my best friend. He wanted to give the Sackville's a thankyou for the trouble they gave us earlier with a pie. I giggled in my head at the thought and wished I could join but instead sent him home. He warned me that he would take up our trail but I beleive in good sense that he, thouhg able, would stay and help my parents with the inn.
I led my horse to adrian who waited patiently for my arrival and we took off into the forest trail. We traveld for two days and a night. I was not use to sleeping out doors and felt alitle scared the first night. I shivered at the sound of the distant dog howls and frog chirping. Adrian sensed the presence of someone who she suspected was following our trail.
My thoughts burst to the conclusion of it being Assar and this thought made me smille more broadly then I ment to. Adrian asked me if I knew who it was.
I beleive I have clue.
We continued on the trail for another day and soon stopped for the night. We ate our small meal over an open fire and went to sleep. Swift had taken a liking to Tiny(the dogs name) And Poko seemed to enjoy our compony and his new owner.
I awoke in the middle of the night and sat up. I suspected I was just awakend by a sound or my own fears. But then two eyes gleemed at me and then it spoke.
"Showed those Sackvilles with that pie I did."
I laughed out from both the fear and happiness to see Assar in front of me.
A few days after I told Gil of my suspicions about someone following us a noise in the night awoke me. Normal night noises didn'tbother me infact I welcomed them, but this was the noise that made me confirm my suspicions of a tracker. The tracker was in our camp. I sprang out of my small pallet and built the fire up. Drawing my sword and moving towards the intruder I snarled slightly and Swift went behind the intruder nudging him closer to the fire. Seeing his face I sheathed my sword and sighed. "Is this the boy who said he would follow us Gil?" I asked sitting back down on my pallet and calling Swift over. "Yes this is Assar. Assar this is Adrian. She is going to become a Ranger and I might just join her in her training," Gil said. "Might" she said because she wasn't totally sure yet.
Aasinav walked through Néred as though he was in his home. It was an unfamiliar place, but he had learned what he could of it - and, like all things, once he had learned of it, it became familiar. Though he had only just arrived, he knew every path, every street, every corridor as well as he knew his own name. He looked about, and though no emotion registered on his face, there seemed to be an air of... concern, about him. As though he knew of strange things taking place, and wished to ensure they did not turn out badly.
He turned a corner, and stopped. Taking in the two before him, he nodded slowly as they turned as one to stare at him.
"This is a private discussion," said Hruad, though not unkindly.
Aasinav smiled, though the expression had no true joy to it, merely politeness. "You are Hruad, are you not? A concerned citizen of this realm, from what I had been told. I thought you should be made aware... of the dark spell your kingdom has fallen under."
Imarwyn was very pleased with how Ruafus was progressing. He had already allowed her on his back and was used to the vicinity of other people as well. Imarwyn estimated that by the time they reached Néred, he would allow others to ride him without a problem. Which was just as well because with the training of Ruafus finished, she would have to look for new work and a commendation from commander Athalt Cranain would doubtlessly open many doors in Néred.
As she placed a saddle on the black horse's back, Imarwyn thought back about the week she had spend with the soldiers. So far they had behaved themselves rather well and Imarwyn was impressed with the way Athalt held his soldiers on the right track. She smiled to herself. But if any of them still found time to mishave himself in the two days that seperated them from Néred.... Well, there was little a strategically placed knife couldn't solve.
The other soldiers that stood around the small scene were fingering the pommels of their swords.
The enormous creature swiveled its head toward him, and as it did so the tree that stood beside it came alive, taking a couple steps forward.
Athalt resisted the urge to reach up and rub his eyes . . . this simply couldn't be happening! What were these creatures?
"My name is Bushbark," the tree introduced himself, "and this is Boulderhead."
We will take the third mouth from the left and sail up it to Minas Tirith," I said and when Gil asked why we were stopping in Enedwaith instead of going straight to Lond Daer I continued and explained, "We are going to Enedwaith because there is a pipe-weed that only grows there and I am partial to it."
Imarwyn's hand lay already on the hilt of her knive as soon as she saw the stone-creature but she thought better of it. The creature, ontor as it called itself seemed to be made up from real stone. No knive would avail against that. Luckily the ontor didn't seem to be evil and he was accompagnied by an ent, which Imarwyn knew as usually good creatures. She hoped the ent would be able to keep the ontor's temper in check. Being crushed by the rocky hands of the ontor was not a future Imarwyn wished to pursue.
To have something else to do than stare at the two large creatures that had appeared in the middle of the camp, Imarwyn moved over to the horse that the ontor had put down. The horse looked a bit dazed, not being used to be lifted in the air like that it hestated between either kicking the ontor or bolting.Neither option would have been a good choice but Imarwyn managed to calm it and she led it away to a safe distance from the ontor. "Well if anything, Enedwaith sure is a eventfull place." she said half to herself. The horse made no comment to disagree.
They had seen strange things that day, but Athalt would have to put them in his memory, to think about on a later occasion. The earth was more alive than it had seemed to be. Elves had taught the ents to speak in the beginning, so the tales told. Perhaps they had given the same gift to the Ontors? It was speculation; he'd leave such thoughts for later.
Aasinav rubbed the knuckles of his left carefully, a mild compulsive habit that still, from the cool scholar, seemed calm and rational rather than a sign of nervousness.
"I am a scholar, you see, of ancient history. I was investigating the history of the barrow-downs, and the kingdom that stood there long ago. My searches indicated that the downfall of the kingdom, an event long shrouded in the mists of time, was tied to another myserious artifact of the past - something known only as the Hytorax."
He paused, and switched to rubbing the knuckles of his other hand. Hruad raised an eyebrow, as though waiting for him to get to the point, while Elise remained silent, her eyes burrowing into him as she listened intently - though he had the feeling he was telling her nothing new.
Meeting her gaze, he continued, "Now, in addition to my other scholarly pursuits, I have some small skill in... certain arts. Mainly in matters of divination and discovery of course, as well as in the ending of certain wards and spells - arts suitable to my research, mainly. In any case, I discovered signs of the Hytorax's power resonating throughout the Barrow Downs - very subtle signs, but when I traced deeper, I discovered what it meant. Some powerful sorcerer, as it were, seemed to be tapping into the artifact's power indirectly - and using it to weave dark magics upon this kingdom. I could not locate the Hytorax at the time, so inquired among parties who are... concerned with such dark sorcerer's as the one at work here. They gave me your name... and so, I have brought my tale to you."
Divination? Spells? She did not recognize him and the thought of a mortal human messing about with magic was always something to worry about in her opinion. Although it was true she did not know all the Isitary that had been sent to Middle Earth, or all the Maiar. Still, she doubted that he was either.
“What he says is true.” Elise said quietly. Only Hurad could hear her unless the old man had the Valar’s hearing… “I have had little enough time to contemplate the whole thing but I agree with him.”
Hurad gave the slightest nod and handed her a goblet of wine which she took a sip of, the wine wasn’t particularly strong, but it was still very good; clearing her thoughts and allowing her to ponder the situation.
“Who,” Elise said slowly an calmly, turning back to the man as she thought of how vague he had been at one point in particular, “are these ‘parties’ you speak of?” She locked eyes with him again. It was nice to meet some one in Middle Earth who could finally look her in the eyes. While they were useful tools, it was nice to not have to be always looking at this man’s forehead or nose.
Her brown robe slipped and the dark green sleeve of her dress showed, the silver leaf embroidery on the cuff catching the light for a moment before Elise resettled herself. Aasinav arched an eyebrow but merely gave his reply and filed the information away for later.
“Now if some one with a sword comes running at you, what do you think you should do?” Asaar asked Gil. Both of them were leaning against an old oak, panting for air because they had just finished with a long knife-training lesson. More of an exercise for Asaar as he was doing the teaching and more of a lesson for Gil as she was doing the learning.
“Ermmm… Get in close and go for the stomach?” Gil said tentatively, making a little upward stabbing motion with her blade and raising an eyebrow.
“Well I suppose you could try that. You would be lucky to leave fully intact though.” Asaar said slowly. “No, unless you can drop him at something like ten paces away with a throwing knife.” Here Asaar paused to pull a very small blade from his boot top and throw it at a tree, neatly splitting a leaf in two before he turned back and continued “You run as fast as you can.”
“But what if you HAVE to fight?” Gil asked as Asaar walked over and dug his knife out of the tree’s trunk.
“Then you do what you suggested.” Asaar said with a grin.
“Or you slice them in two with your sword.” Adrian said and made a chopping motion with her arm, smirking.
“I was speaking of daggers specifically, Adrian.” Asaar snapped. He didn’t like the hobbit very much and spent most of his time talking to Gil and as far away from Adrian as he could get.
Adrian shrugged, “Don’t get snappy with me boy. I’m just trying to show Gil how it’s really done.”
Adrian gasped and fumbled for her sword as a dagger zipped over her head, knicking a few hairs off that had been sticking up. Asaar was grinning like an idiot and spinning another dagger around his hand while performing a sort of skippy dance.
Asaar yelped as Adrian’s sword slashed and came within an inch of his head.
“So now we understand each other, right?” Adrian said in annoyance. “I’m a swords woman, you’re a little blade tosser. Right?”
Asaar shrugged and retrieved his dagger, sheathing it with a flick of his wrist and a grin on his face, already turning to Gil and starting a joke he must have told before. He and Gil finnished the punchline together and burst out laughing, hanging on to each other so they wouldn't simply fall over.
‘Does NOTHING stop him from smiling!?’ Adrian thought peevishly.
"I wanted to take this to an important authority," Aasinav told Elise. "So I took it to a person in court."
"My political views aren't a major secret," Hruad informed Elise.
"Will you be willing to do something about this?" Aasinav asked. "Or did I come to the wrong person?"
Elise and Aasinav each turned their eyes toward Hruad, and he could not think clearly with the two powerful wills bent on him. He couldn't tell what it was about them that made him feel this way, but he managed to shut them out of his mind and consider the matter for a moment.
Aasinav and Elise appeared to have sided with each other, both in agreement that he should and must do something about this. He had just recently made it completely clear to Elise that he wanted to do something about it, and he did!
"If there is a spell at work," Hruad said, his rational mind beginning to come to conclusions, "then as you say, Aasinav, there must be an enchanter behind it.
"If there is an enchanter behind this spell, than I must know who it is. Then we can at least know for certain who it is we're fighting against.
"What do we know for certain about this Hytorax? Both you, Elise, and you, Aasinav, tell me that it is of vital importance to our opponents within the court.
"And Aasinav," Hruad continued, turning to the man. "There is something in your story that doesn't fit with Elise's tale. She claims to have found an orc on the edge of the Barrow Downs, seeking the Hytorax. If the sorcerer is already using it, then how come he needs to obtain it?"
"For increased protection," Aasinav suggested after a little thought. "He knows that as his scheme against Vahatres becomes more advanced, people will notice more and question more. He will want that item as safe as it can be. He might also have spotted me in that area, as I conducted my research. I disappeared, but they may have feared that I had found more than I had.
"In any case, if they move the Hytorax now, then we could lose whatever knowledge we have of its whereabouts, and exchange its present location for a more dangerous one yet."
"Then we must stop them from obtaining it," Hruad said. "But how?"
"We go to the Barrow Downs," Elise said, "and retrieve the Hytorax first."
For a moment there was complete silence. The scheme appeared deadly, impossible! The spirits of the dead dwelt there, spirits that had claimed the lives of thousands that had originally lived in that land, and of many other travelers that had been passing through there later. And yet what was the alternative? To watch Enedwaith fall under the enemy's power.
"Is there no other way?" Hruad asked. "Could we not simply kill the sorcerer?"
"Perhaps," Elise said, but she looked doubtful. "And it isn't likely at all, if the Red Flame is really involved, and this sorcerer is one of them. They could easily replace their lost associate, and we'd be hunted down and killed."
"We need to know who we are up against, anyway," Hruad said. "Do any of us know precisely what the Hytorax does? It might not be possible to break the sorcerer's link with it simply by taking it."
"If you really think finding the identity of the sorcerer is so important," Aasinav said, "then we should try two days from now."
"Why then?" Hruad asked, looking a little confused.
"Because that is the day of the victory march," Aasinav said with a small, wry smile.
Hruad hit himself on the forehead. "Of course! Athalt Cranain returns that day, and the court will turn out to meet him, along with much of the population of Néred."
Elise looked at Aasinav and one of her eyebrows quirked a little. "Would your small 'arts' cover identifying the linking spell of a sorcerer?"
"I could try," he said doubtfully.
"We will all work at identifying likely candidates," Elise said. "But we aren't many."
"I will get you both quarters here at court," Hruad told them. "And we had best keep our eyes open for citizens of Enedwaith or newcomers here that might be interested in helping our country out of its present crisis."
"Simply asking around for help is dangerous," Aasinav remarked.
"Be careful whom you ask," Hruad answered. He glanced out the window, and saw that it was night. They had been talking by candlelight; he had lost track of the time.
"Come with me," he said, standing up and leading them out the door. "You will both be guests here, at my expense."
He found them both separate rooms, a floor beneath his. "Goodnight to you," he said, turning and heading back up the stairs.
The sun climbed up the mountains in the west, setting the sky in a flaming voyage of the morning dawn. The birds flapped around from treetop to treetop, singing merry songs for the arrival of a new day.
"The golden woods of Lothlorien still keep its memory of old glory, elves are leaving for the Undying lands of Valinor, few now are left..." Glimdrell said to himself, touching the golden leafs of a tree as he walked through the western borders of the forest.
"And no orcs have been seen outside of Moria for many months," Glimdrell sighed and looked to the mountains in the west, where the sun was rising, "...and yet there is a warning in my heart telling me of evil acts still passing in this world... If only the news would reach me..."
A bird came flying down from a tree and landed on Glimdrells shoulder. He smiled and said, "Long has it been since you brought me ill news, my feathered friend. The world is filled with happiness and merry songs now, and few remembers me and the rhyme they once gave me." The bird sang a few merry tones and Glimdrell chuckled "haha, yes indeed my friend. These are much merrier times then those you saw at your birth." The bird flew away in a merry song and joined a few other birds flying in circles above the treetops.
"I wonder if it is time for Glimdrell Silvershadow to leave his home in the Golden Wood, and search for news in the west..." he said to himself as he looked at the mountains once again. "Long has it been since I last saw the tall men of the south, and the little folk that were passing our boarders..." He grinned, "too long have I rested in my homeland, where news seldom reach me anymore."
In this very moment a flock of birds were approaching from the southwest, they cought Glimdrells attention right away and he walked to meet them. Suddenly they were flying all around him in circle, singing in their merry way. Glimdrell smiled, "news at last..."
***
Long had the birds sung together before they reached for the sky again and in thought Glimdrell whistled. At once a beautiful, black horse came in full speed and stopped head to head with the elf. Glimdrell smiled and patted his nose. "Long has it been since I needed your aid in travell, my friend." The horse neighed pleasently and Glimdrell sprang up on his back.
"Please take me to the Dunland as quick as you may!"
Glimdrells hair flicked in the wind as the horse bore him along the riverside westward through the mountainpass. "So the Hytorax has been found," Glimdrell thought. "Only little do I remember of the old tales about the kingdom that lay in the Barrow Downs. Too unlucky were their fortune, and too powerfull was the Blue flame, Hytorax..." He shivered by the thought of it. "...and a new breed of orcs, red flame signature... foul are the acts of such deeds!"
"Full speed, my black friend! Full speed!"
***
By nightfall they reached the rocky mountains, and quickly they found the secret path leading through the mountainpass, frost started to cover the earth and rock, making it hard and slippery to go on. They only stopped one time through the night for food and drink before they continued, and by dawn the third day they had reached the west end of the mountains.
Looking south the Dunland appeared before their eyes. "Fast and tireless you have been," Glimdrell said as he dismounted the horse. From his pouch he got a small lembas waffer and broke it in two. One he gave the horse. "This will recover your strength, for I must ask you to take me further into the Dunland." The horse neighed and nodded.
Unhoocking the goblet Glimdrell said "Once I shall name you in the tongue of elves, my dear friend." He patted the horse and took a little sip of the strengthening liquid. "Off we go again then!"
***
Four more days had passed and the blackening of nightfall had once again surrounded the lands. Suddenly a glimt of light, like that of a burning fire in a campsite cought Glimdrells eye a mile away in the east. Glimdrell quickly dismounted his horse. "Here we must part, for now I need to go with silence and stealth." He patted the horses nose and smiled giving the horse a little taste of another lembas waffer. "We shall meet again before the end, now go home..." and so the black horse left the silvan elf in the shadows of the night...
***
Glimdrell slowly approached the light, but didn't want to get too close. He knew the way of going undetected by scouts and guards, he had to be carefull. He put the hood above his head and closed the surcoat around him, becoming invissible to the human eye as the shadow of the night made his cover...
Hope you didn't fall asleep too many times :p I guess the time at the end here would be about the same time as the night after Athalt and the rest of the camp had the strange encounter with the Ent and Ontor... I guess I have to make the next move in order to get interactions between our characters, as my character really know how not to be seen... so just go on with your thing Lief and Eärniel... I might not start open interaction just yet :p ah well...
I wasn't very pleased with Asaar's over-protectiveness of Gil and his cheek, but I had to live with it. I would live with it for Gil, although it was kind of funny when I swung at him. He jumped at least two feet in the air. We camped about a half a days walk from Tharbad. This meant we would get to Gondor ahead of scedual. We were making good progress.
Getting closer some guards were watching the borders of the campsite, the fire that had cought his attention in the firstplace was kept alive to make it easier to scout, and some tents were gathered around. "Must make my move very slowly here, if I'm not to be seen" Glimdrell thought pulling the surcoat even closer around him and dragging the hood tighter down his face.
Slowly he approached the camp in a little gap between two guards, but he knew he had to get their attention away from his spot in order to pass.
On the ground he found a small stone that he took a grip of and tossed about 8 feet behind him, making a noise that could remind of human activity as it hit the grass. As the guards noticed the noise and looked past Glimdrell to the spot where the stone had landed, he could easily sneak past them.
Quickly he hided in the shadows casted on the tents by the fire. How should he make his next move? So long it had been since he last confronted a human being, would he still remember the speach of the Dunlendings? He once knew it well, but it was long since he had spoken any language but that of birds and beasts.
He knew he would be revealed anyway when the morning came... maybe it was just as wise to wait, men always find courage and better thought at the rise of dawn. Glimdrell settled with that thought, and waited in the shadows, silently...
ooc: When you find me in the morning I will still have my surcoat and hood on, making it impossible to see that I'm an elf, if not judging by my size... all weapons are conseald under my surcoat, so little elven signs are revealed by my appearance as it is now...
*It doesn't have to be pathetic. He did sense that evil and he is rather behind the times, so it's fairly logical.*
"The captain says we should continue keeping sentry duty," one of the two guards said.
The other prodded the bushes with his drawn sword. "We're good enough at seeing in the dark, but there's no one here. Could have been a rabbit. There's really no need for this, when we're this close to Néred."
"The captain's instincts have kept us save in the past, and it would be good to follow his security measures. Now stop your whining!" The older guard sheathed his sword and walked back to his position, his younger comrade following.
"If you really are concerned about it, talk to the captain about it in the morning! His tent is the one directly to your left after you reach the second campfire that way!"
The younger guard glanced in the direction his elder was pointing, and went quiet.
Glimdrell was pleased he had hung around to listen to that small conversation. It might have been safer for him to have met these troops in the morning, and it would have meant less questions. But at least this way they could be sure that he meant their leader no harm.
He moved noiselessly through the shadows, passing tent flaps and soldiers until he reached their captain's tent.
The man stood in the center of his tent, his brow furrowed in thought.
"Good evening," Glimdrell said.
Steel leapt in the night, and Glimdrell's dagger neatly parried Athalt's sword. Athalt had come in unbelievably fast; few that weren't elves could have been ready for it.
"I mean you no harm," Glimdrell said, taking a step back.
The light of the candle on the desk danced in Athalt's eyes, but for a moment he was silent and motionless.
"I actually came for news," Glimdrell continued, lowering his knife.
"Who are you?" Athalt asked, moving his sword back to the on-guard position.
"My name is Glimdrell," he answered. The language of these men was not that of the Dunlanders, so he was probably safe. "I mean you no harm."
"Then lay down your weapon."
Glimdrell did so.
"What news did you want?" Athalt asked calmly, sheathing his sword.
"For many years I have dwelt in a wood, separate from knowledge of what is happening in the lands. I seek this knowledge now."
"I can tell you some of the basics," Athalt said with an amused smile. "But if you want more detailed information, you would do well to travel with us to Néred, the capitol of my country. There are court members there that will be willing to speak with you and tell you what you want. I know one of them- a man named Dolais Dularae. He will be able to tell you what you need."
"Thank-you," Glimdrell said, bowing his head.
"What are you?" Athalt asked.
Yawning Imarwyn walked to her tent, she had made a final check up on Ruafus and Merrah before she went to sleep. Not that it had been necessary but it made her feel better. She hated to admit it to herself but she was a little nervous about seeing Néred soon. Some of the excitement of the soldiers must have rubbed off on her.
A movement to the left caught her eye and she stopped. For a few seconds she peered into the shadows that surrounded the tents but she could see nothing out of the ordinary. "Go to sleep Imarwyn," she murmered to herself, "your tired head is making you jump at shadows."
She walked on but before she had taken 4 steps she heard the familiar tell-tale sound of metal to metal. She spun around, immediatly her hand lay on her dagger. Jumping at shadows was one things but shadows normally didn't make such a sound. Her eyes scanned the silent camp around her and rested finally on the captain's tent. The sound had come from that direction and the lights were still on. Imarwyn silently sneaked closer. It normally wasn't her habit of peering into men's tents but she made an exception now that her curiosity was aroused. Who was playing with swords so late in the evening?
As she peered through the small opening of the tentflap she could make out a little of the inside; she could see Athalt and a man clad in a surcoat who stood with his back towards her. As she hear them talking she suppressed a chuckle. Athalt Cranain's company sure seemed to attract a lot of night-time intruders. This man was apparantly a little luckier than Imarwyn had been. He didn't seem dangerous but his voice was strange and his accent was unlike Imarwyn had ever heard before. But that is none of my business, she concluded. But as she turned to walk away she inadvertedly made a sound for the hooded man heard it and said "I will tell you if the young lady that is eavesdropping shows herself."
Imarwyn entered the tent wondering how the newcomer had known she was a woman when he had his back turned towards her. "I heard the sound of metal. I wanted to check it out." she said as explanation.
Glimdrell smiled underneath his hood as the woman entered the tent.
"Now where were we, ah, yes. I see you live a little too far away from my borders to recon my name" Glimdrell whispered, as he seldom spoke openly, though the whisper was high enough for all to hear.
He pulled his hood back and tossed the black surcoat behind his shoulders, letting it fall like a cape and reveal the silvercoloured inside of it. His hair was flowing and gleaming in the dim light and the silver yewells were shining. "I am Glimdrell Silvershadow, the Silent Assasin of Lothlorien!" he now spoke in all the elven glory of his voice.
Athalt, Imarwyn and the soldiers around him was for a second astonished as the elf revealed his true appearance. This elf was almost glowing in the dim light.
"News was brought to me recently by birds of the west, I was told to go to the Dunlands, that should lead me on my trail." Glimdrell smiled, "I thank you for not cutting my throath, and I must say your guards made it more difficult for me to enter then I am used to." He smirked for a moment. "And I must say this woman here has some awareness. Did I get any of your names?"
"Athalt." The captain said promtly. "And I am Imarwyn," the woman replied. "Alright," Glimdrell said. "I'll be following the camp tomorrow morning then. I thank you again Captain Athalt, and I would be pleased if I got to sleep outside..."
I walked steadily Forward until I fell right into A Barrow. I managed to get to my feet when I caught a Glimpse of Gree in my eye. I looke towards where it was and saw what it is...The HytoRax! I had heard of it before in many legends. It seemed to be The Hytorax, it matched every description I had come across. I leant forward to get it when the floor beneath the Stone colapsed and it fell deep down below the earth until I heard a Large Splash.
"Cheep! Cheep, cheep!"
A bird hopped along the top of a branch, looking down at the sentries on duty and puffing out its little red breast. One of them pointed up to him and smiled, talking briefly in his comrade's ear. The other sentry simply shrugged and took another bite of his breakfast.
Again, the tents were being pulled down in the camp. Morning had come, and the newcomer was also attracting strange glances. Apparently he too had been invited to join their company, though there was less visible reason for this than there had been for Imarwyn's joining. Ruafus was a fine horse, deadly, fast and spirited. He had taken to Imarwyn though, and appeared willing to obey his master. He could apparently see that Athalt was his new master, so he was willing to accept him now on his back. Imarwyn could easily ride him, bare back or with saddle, and she knew that she was almost completely safe upon Ruafus. He was loyal to her; the only danger lay in his getting excited by something and ignoring direction, to pursue an opposing rider, or to chase a dog rather than doing what most other horses did, fleeing it.
Athalt mounted his horse and led the soldiers forward until dusk. They pitched camp, and the next morning set out again, on what was the second day.
"This afternoon we shall arrive at Néred," the word spread around the camp in excitement.
"This afternoon we shall arrive at Néred!"
"We'll be arriving at Néred this afternoon!"
"A royal reception . . ."
"I know the country around this place- I was brought up here! We aren't far now!"
The city drew closer, and it wasn't long before its walls were visible. The tall buildings made of finely chiseled stone loomed up in the citadel, the center of the capitol of Enedwaith. The court was surrounded by a high wall, a second wall which enclosed the inner buildings in a final protection. Three towers were guarding it; one a gatehouse and the other two being protection posts. The higher buildings of the citadel could be seen beyond this wall.
But below all of that was where the soldiers were looking. The gates were open- the men were welcome.
"Raise spears," Athalt ordered. "And unfurl the flags. These people will be looking for a parade, and we all want to give it to them."
The men grinned and a few laughed as they eagerly followed their leader's bidding. Then their horses pushed forward as they approached the city.
By Adrians calculations we were nearing our destination of Nered. Adrian had obtained her pipe weed and was merrily smoking while I practiced with Asaar some of my newly learned fighting moves. I had just doubled back and advanced on Asaar as he backet up then ducked from my counter attack. I tried again and this time managed to wound him(Not really) in the arm and across the chest. He got me back in the face but I moved back and advanced and got him in the neck quickly.
He laughed. We sat down next to the fire talking about what we would find in Nered and how many pranks we could play on the orcs if neede.
"We could go in the night and while they sleep paint targets on their heads." I suggested not thinking if they would wake up or not.
Asaar just laughed and nodded at the joke.
Adrian finished her pipe then declared that we should arrive in Nered in the afternoon of the moro.
"If we make good speed and not stop about 30 times." She looked at me as she said this. I blushed.
The next morning I wokr up to sunshine. We walked all the way to Néred without incident. I was eager to see my friend whom I will say was and is very nice. "So who is this friend we are going to see?" Gil asked wondering who this person who could make them go off course would be. "His name is Brilindil and he is a weird person, but he is nice," I told her. "How is he weird?" She pried. "He is an Elven Wizard, born from a race of elves now lost except for him for none now live in Middle Earth except for him. The rest have sailed long ago, abandoning him to grow up here without a family. He lived with Gandalf for a short time and then with elves and then with hobbits. Come, We must hurry if we want to reach his house by sundown," I said running ahead of Asaar who had taken the lead when I had slowed down to talk to Gil. I remembered then that the hobbits he had lived with the longest had been the Brandybucks with my brother and I, then he had moved with us to Bag End. Sadly he had then moved to Néred, hoping to get a job. He had gotten a very good job. I really wanted to see him.
The first thing Imarwyn would always remember about Néred was the cheering. They could hear the joyfull sounds before they actually entered the city, the people of Néred had been expecting them. The company rode through the city gate in full glory, their harnasses polished and shining and spears and flags raised high. It was indeed a sight to remember. Along both sides of the road people stood watching the entrance of the company and cheered as they passed. Especially Athalt received most attention as was to be expected. He rode at the head of his company and was seated on Ruafus. The horse was now deemed fully trained and the entrance in the city would be the very final test but neither Athalt or Imarwyn doubted that the horse would fail. And Ruafus did not disappoint them.
Imarwyn rode at the end of the company, just before the wagons. She didn't want to attract too much attention, after all she had not fought in the battles Athalt's company had fought. She took in the sights and sounds of the city. So this is Néred, she mused. Besides her rode the elf that had joined the company short days before. He had his hood pulled up to conceal his face and he hadn't spoken much. Imarwyn guessed he wasn't overly fond of crowded places as elves never were. She remembered he had introduced himself as the Silent Assasin of Lothlorien. Not a guy you wanted to pick a fight with then, Imarwyn concluded before she turned her attention again to the city around her.
ooc:we see the parade thing Lief but we get there before you do okay?
ic: I took them to Brilindil's house and he welcomed us, "Adrian. Hello, good to see you. Come in, come in, who are your friends?" "This is Gil the Hobbit and Asaar the Troublemaker. Gil, Asaar, this is Brilindil Asilin the Elven Wizard. So Bril, how are you?" I asked introducing my companions and walking inside Bril's house. He had done well for himself. "I am fine. How are you and Frodo?" he asked sitting and motioning for us to do likewise. "Well, I am fine and so are Sam and Merry and Pippin, but Frodo sailed away last year. I like your house it is lovely. So. What have you been up to?" I told him. "Nothing much. You got here just in time. There is to be a parade today. It will be spectacular." Bril answered.
*Adrian, either you or Sicirus should probably post soon. You're still behind the times you know, and it would be good to get them up to date. I'm ready to launch into the climax. Adrian, I don't know if you've thought of this or not, but that 'really good job' that Bril got could easily be a job in court. That would explain how she gets into contact with Hruad, if you wanted to do it like that.*
ic:We arrived in Nered. I was at awe watching all the humans and horses so big walk around. I stumbled on poor Asaar from not watvhing my step. We arrived at Adrian's friend and we decided to check out his job station in the court. He also informed us of a celebration entended for the arrival of warriors in the city. I smilled braodly for I had never seen warriors and wished to see the armor and swords glittering in the sun light. I loved war horses and my pony which had helped in the journey was safly resting in a stable in his newly knitted blankette.(which Adrian found toooo embarissing for her to watch me knit since it seemed to Girlish for her liking.)But The horse loved it.
We made our way down a dirt path to a large white stoned building. We entered the building and were immidiatly shewed(sp) out for the gates of the entrance had just opend and we were not to miss the parad and activity. I almost jumped in hystaricly laughter andf happiness. (which was a bit over exitment.)But decided not to do this in front of my friends.
We made our way to a special place in the crowd with a good view of the visiters. They came in on horses of the most high standerds. Holding their heads high and lifting their hooves up in a millitary fashion. The people on the horses amazed me the most. They were dresssed in magnifisent armor of gold and silver color. They bore their crest proudly and open on their chests. Their helmets were off to reveal(sp) the different people and many had dark brown hair save two who were quite odd in the group of men. One was golden haired and smaller then the others.And the other was hooded and seeemd to wish to be out of sight. I marveled at the swords and bows but kept glancing back at the two riders. Asaar grind non stop and punched me playfully on the arm showing me the back horse that stood out from the rest. He also pointed out the leader who was holding their flag which waved proudly in the light wind.
"Ah, Hruad!"
Brilindil noticed the man standing across the hall, talking to some white haired old woman. Another man was apparently also in the conversation.
Hruad glanced around in his direction, spotted him and waved. "I'll be with you in a moment!"
Brilindil started heading in his direction, Adrian close behind him. As they got nearer, they were able to hear a little of the conversation.
"I have my own place with those of the representatives that are present, so I'll be there, able to watch everything that happens."
"I will mingle with the others of the court, keeping a close place," the bland faced man said.
Brilindil reached them.
"Don't worry about me," the old woman said, glancing at Brilindil. "I will find a good place for myself to watch the parade."
"So what have you been up to, me dear fellow?" Brilindil asked, slapping him on the back. "Business associates?" he asked, motioning with a hand at the two retreating figures.
"Of a kind," Hruad answered.
"Adrian's companions hurried off too fast for me to catch 'em," Bril said. "But I've brought Adrian. Her name is Adrian Baggins- she came here on the road to adventure and glory!"
Adrian rolled her eyes, and Hruad smiled a little. "Adventure, Adrian? You look a little small to get tangled with things like that, if you don't mind my saying so."
She did mind, and let him know. She socked him in the knee, and he took a wobbled step backward, grunting in pain. "It's ridiculous for you to say anything like that! Too small! My brother was no bigger than I am, and he was the Ring Bearer! Us hobbits have changed the course of the world, and I am apprentice with the blade to Lord Aragorn, if you wanted to know."
"Astonishing credentials," Hruad remarked, rubbing his knee.
"We're on our way to Gondor!"
"And we are welcoming home our own heroes right now," Hruad answered, limping toward the courtyard. "Come with me if you want a good view of the specta- you surely are accustomed to sights like this though."
Adrian gritted her teeth a little and followed him.
Something slammed on one of the side doors, and the three of them turned their heads in surprise. The side door was bashed against again, and rocked on its hinges, only barely holding.
Bril hurried to open it, and a shadow fell into the room. The Ontor stepped in.
"I should have known," Hruad muttered through gritted teeth.
Bushbark followed Boulderhead in a second later.
"What are you two doing here?" Hruad asked. "And how did you get into the citadel?"
"Ambassadors license," Bushbark said with a grin.
"They took you for ambassadors?" Hruad asked in disbelief.
"They didn't have much choice in the matter," Boulderhead grunted, "if they didn't want to make a scene."
"Can I talk to you later?" Hruad asked. "Find a seat with Adrian and Bril and watch the parade."
"We've finished our journey . . ."
"I really have to go," Hruad said as trumpets blared outside. "The king is emerging now- talk to you later!"
He hurried out, and the others looked at each other.
"This way," Bril said, motioning them with one hand to some seats by a window.
Elise was staring long and hard at the king, studying him and the spell that was laid upon him.
The king was just beginning the small speech he'd prepared in praise of Athalt and his soldiers. He was clad in scarlet and purple robes and had a gold necklace around his neck, with a gleaming jewel at the end. He was wearing his golden crown, and was standing at the top of the dias, with Athalt a few steps lower.
She could feel the source of the spell, lingering somewhere in the court complex to the king's far right.
She ran around the back of the crowd of courtiers, pulling her hood and cloak closer about herself. She could now feel it more closely, she realized as she hurried across a small stretch of grass and onto a cobblestone path.
She looked a little more closely at the nearest building. No, it wasn't there.
She continued to the next one, glanced at it, and then stopped. Yes, the source was almost certainly coming from in there. It was a rather tall building with a good view of the parade.
"You may not enter," said a guard at the door.
Her eyes flashed and she loomed over him, terrible power coming from her direction.
"Sorceress," the guard hissed, taking several steps back and drawing his sword. "I'm sorry, you may not pass."
She struck him with her staff on his right arm, and his sword fell useless to the floor. He opened his mouth in a cry of pain but she tensed her fingers and his body went rigid, crumpling upon the floor. The guard twitched a bit, but he was no longer a problem.
Stepping over him, she continued up the stairs. She reached a hallway and turned the corner, careful to remain as quiet as possible now. She had reached the door that the man was in. Him and several courtiers.
She seized the doorhandle and turned it, quietly. She stepped inside at the back of a group of men. None of them noticed her except one, who turned his head the moment she came in. Their eyes locked, and they knew each other.
A blade hissed from a sheath, and a darkness filled the room, radiating from the man.
"Do not let her get away!" the creature of darkness screamed, and Elise saw the spirits of soldiers through the walls, running to surround the building.
The courtiers weren't there any longer, except as shadows. Elise's enemy stepped through them, raising his Morgul blade.
Now was not the time for the confrontation- Elise didn't have the power to confront him in his place of strength.
Elise turned and ran, the darkness hurtling after her.
Aasinav turned his head in the direction of the buildings.
Brilindil felt the burst of power from the entryway and stood up in surprise.
Elise screamed as a weapon scrapped across her side and slashed with her own weapon, killing the man instantly. A soldier blocked her way, and she smote his weapon to smitherines in one blow. Light blinded the men and they fell back from her. She ran, camouflaging herself among the buildings, and they had lost her.
"There are more," the sorcerer snarled through bared teeth. "This is not over yet."
Asaar turned his head and saw a cloaked figure running, an old person by the looks of them, and a man stealing after the figure. The man had an ill-favored look and carried a dagger, the dagger was unsheathed and held in such a position that a backstab would be easy.
“Not while I’m watching!” muttered Asaar and he easily dropped off the edge of the balcony he had been standing on, landing softly only a little behind the man and striding silently after. Maybe this didn’t have to be violent.
“Excuse me!” Asaar said loudly, tapping the man on the shoulder.
“I was hoping you cou-” Asaar dropped flat on his back as the man slashed awkwardly at him.
With all his might, Asaar lashed out with both of his legs and sent the man and his knife flying. The figure had turned around and was watching, seeming torn over what to do.
Asaar was on his feet quickly and he dived at the man, a throwing dagger suddenly in each hand and ready to stab.
He thought he saw some people come around the corner, but as he half turned his head, the man caught him in midair, some how having managed to get up, and wrapped an arm around Asaar’s neck, holding him easily as he was a foot or more taller than Asaar.
Frantically struggling, Asaar stabbed with his knives but the man disarmed him easily, wrestling the daggers away with a well-muscled arm, and the world slowly tunneled black. The world snapped back to focus for a second as the man used one of Asaar’s daggers to nick Asaar’s arm, and the man said some thing about him ‘being in league with the sorceress.’ And ‘taking you to my Master.’
Asaar tried to yell for help, or anything. Just some thing to attract a little attention. But nothing would come out. The man had taken his arm off Asaar’s neck and was now squeezing him in a huge bear hug, crushing Asaar’s thin frame against his bulky one.
Asaar could almost feel his ribs groaning, ready to break.
And then the man’s grip loosed and he dropped Asaar, screaming and clutching his leg where one of Asaar’s daggers protruded. How had he managed that?
Asaar lay, helpless, and watched as the man’s eyes widened in rage and he brought his heavy fist up to smash Asaar’s face in… And then there was a flash of light and the man fell limply, landing on Asaar and crushing him further. The old figure stood nearer now, or was it farther? Asaar couldn’t quite tell and he didn’t care.
The world didn’t tunnel this time; it simply went out like a candle.
". . . the only one that actually got to me."
"A budding hero, just what we were looking for."
"Brave, but foolish. How could we use him?"
Aasar groaned a little, and his eyes fluttered open. He could see people standing about him, discussing him?
Elise walked across the floor, continuing what she had been saying to Hruad. "Besides, he's too young. Young and cocky."
The door burst open. "What's going on?" Brilindil asked loudly. "I sensed that little turmoil, I think you should know!"
"I see you found him first," Aasinav said to Elise, walking in from behind Brilindil. Adrian had come in as well.
"The whole company's collected now," Hruad remarked with a small smile, from his chair.
"NOT QUITE!" Boulderhead said loudly, pushing his way into the room with ease. Finding a position in the room afterward where he wouldn't be in everyone's way was a little bit harder.
"Never mind, I'll sit outside the room and talk," he said, crawling back outside. "You forgot all about us, Hruad."
"Much has been happening," he answered.
"Like what?"
"I think I'll have to answer that question now, for all of you," Hruad said. "There isn't anyone else who will be just popping in here, is there?"
"If you don't count me," Gil-Thalion said, attempting to climb over Boulderhead. Bushbark gave her a helping hand, picking her up and putting her down inside the room.
"Thank-you."
"I assume this is the last member of your band?" Hruad asked Adrian.
"Yes."
"Then I will get to the point. A sorcerer has been unmasked today, one who is playing King Vahatres like a puppet. He is in control of Enedwaith.
"He knows that we know about him now, and consequently will do everything in his power to kill us."
"We don't have to get involved in this," Brilindil said. "Why should we?"
"I'm afraid all of you are already in this, because of Asaar's action," Hruad said. "There is no turning back. We're stuck together now, with whatever troops our enemy has at his disposal coming to get us. Luckily this parade is going on- it won't be interrupted until Athalt Cranain is suitably welcomed. We have a little time, therefore, to flee the city."
“Wha- Oh!” Asaar began and tried to sit up but fell back, clutching his sides.
A blush sprang up to Asaar’s face as every one turned to look at him, oh well; at least he wasn’t dead or something…
“What is going on?” Asaar asked, his face still flaming but trying to speak steadily.
“The last I knew I was being crushed by a tough man and… You were there.” Asaar said raising an arm and pointing at Elise. At least he thought it was her, maybe not, he had been rather preoccupied…
"I'm afraid that you have no choice," Hruad said to Adrian. "Believe me, it gives me no pleasure to force anyone into this, but it wasn't I who decided that this must be. It is your young, brave friend there," he said, pointing to Asaar.
"They have his face and they have Elise's face. Anyone that they see who is similar to that is also as good as dead."
"But if we flee now-"
"That is precisely what we will do," Hruad told her. "Together. We need each other to survive. They will be watching rivers and roads, so we will have to cut across country. But come, there is on time to lose."
He looked down at Asaar. "What is your name?"
"I'm Asaar."
"Are you able to walk, Asaar?"
He pulled his legs over the side of the bed and got up, shakily. "Uh, yes. Yes, I can walk."
"Good. Because you'll have done a lot of walking soon, and fast walking at that. Boulderhead and Bushbark can't carry all of us."
"Oh yes!" Bushbark said, "we were planning to tell you about our trip! We found the Hytorax!"
All eyes instantly went to him.
"But it fell in a underground pool," he finished lamely.
They turned away in annoyance.
"Come on," Hruad said, walking quickly out of the room, the others following quickly after him.
They hurried down a flight of stairs and entered a large entry hall. Quickly they hurried down a side passage- the entry hall had been full of soldiers.
"Athalt Cranain's soldiers," Hruad told them.
They soon had passed out through a back door. "They are with us," Hraud informed the guards letting Brilindil come up to the front as well.
"Very well," they said, stepping aside to let them pass.
*By the way, everybody, I'd prefer it if we didn't let this degenerate into a bunch of fight sequences on the escape. I know some of you are probably itching for a scrap after all of this setting up, and we'll get there. But I don't think we're there at present- the sorcerer doesn't have an army on their tail. Yet.*
Several long tables had been set across the citadel lawns. Courtiers, nobles and soldiers sat alike on them, and there was celebrating going on outside of the city as well. Athalt sat at the head table with King Vahatres. Dinner had been served, and the soldiers were still gaping at the large buildings, pools and gardens of the citadel.
Most of the talk across the tables was discussion of the battles on the borders of Dunland, naturally enough. Only in the areas that were only soldiers, the conversation was more about the citadel and homecoming celebration.
Night slowly crept across the sky, and the soldiers slowly left the citadel, heading for hotels, for their homes, for inns, and a few for taverns and bars to carry on the party.
"Captain Athalt," Vahatres said as he prepared to go.
"Yes?" he asked, turning back to the king.
"I have quarters arranged here for you and some of your officers," he said with a welcoming smile. "You can remain here, if you wish."
"Thank-you," he answered. "My thanks indeed, your majesty, but I would rather stay with my men tonight."
"I understand. Well good night to you."
The night rolled on, but after visiting a couple of the taverns for a little while, Athalt chose not to remain in the midst of the celebrations. He strolled the streets for a time, listening. But eventually he reached a part of town that was quieter. This was where the residents lived, and it gave him some time to think.
"Do you have a place to sleep tonight?" a voice asked.
"I . . . I don't know," Athalt answered, stirring himself.
"Come to our house," the man said again, and Athalt looked more closely at him. His face was difficult to discern in the darkness.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Girig Hamere. I live just down the street from here; I was coming back from the celebrations. They were getting a little too rowdy for me. You're one of those soldiers under Athalt Cranain's command, isn't that right?"
Athalt stood up and walked over to him. "I was in the battles on the Dunland border."
"Come with me then, friend," Girig said, patting him on the shoulder and leading him down the street. "No man of those brave souls should have a bed on the street tonight."
That morning, Athalt left their family. In payment for their kindness, he told them some stories of the battles- they wouldn't accept money. He made sure that every word of it was truth. They deserved the truth, after all of the inflated victory tales that had been spread around last night. Girig, his wife and his son Dieg could all tell that he was telling the truth as well, and appreciated it.
"I hope to meet you again sometime," Girig said, shaking his hand heartily.
"Perhaps we will."
"What is your name?" Girig asked.
"My comrades call me Small Rider in jest. That will do for now."
Girig grinned. "Whatever you say, Small Rider."
Athalt smiled again and clasped the man's hand firmly. Then he headed down the street again, toward the citadel.
One of the guards approached Athalt Cranain as he passed through the entryway of the citadel. "Sir, the king is expecting you."
"What for?" he asked in surprise.
"I don't know. But he said it was urgent, and you were to be sent to him as soon as you were found."
"I see," Athalt said, and walked quickly on in the direction of the citadel.
A man was walking across an intersecting path toward him. He soon reached and joined him.
"Athalt, it is good to see you," the man said, and Athalt looked at him in surprise.
"Dolais?"
"None other. I actually came to you because I wanted help with something. One of my friends, a man named Hruad, has disappeared. Last time I saw him was at court yesterday, looking a little anxious. Since then I've checked around and-"
"I'm sorry," Athalt cut him off as he reached the hall to the king's quarters. "The king wants to see me, and I cannot keep him waiting. Could we discuss this later?"
"Yes," Dolais said unhappily, and Athalt gave his shoulder a squeeze.
"It's good to see you again, Dolais. I'll be right back."
He quickened his pace, and soon he stood before the king. The king and one of his councilors. The man was clad in silver and green, and his hair was slick and back. He had a sheathed sword at his side, but what Athalt was looking at was his eyes. His eyes and his face. His face was hard, but Athalt was a hard man as well, and it wasn't that that drew Athalt's attention. The man's eyes were calculating, cold, and ruthless. There was more behind that man then met the eye; a lot more.
"I sent messengers looking for you last night," Vahatres began.
"May I ask why?"
"There has been a breech in security, and I need the best man we have here to clog it up."
"You flatter me."
"On the contrary," Vahatres said. "I don't believe you know my friend and councilor, Dagankor?"
"No," Athalt said, turning his attention to the man behind the throne.
"It is a pleasure to meet you at last," Dagankor said. His voice was deep and silky. He stepped down from the dias, his lips turning in a smile as he extended a hand to Athalt.
Athalt nodded to him and turned toward Vahatres. "What is the point of this mission, sire?"
"Dagankor?" Vahatres said, motioning for him to explain it.
Dagankor had lowered his hand again, and was looking hard into Athalt's eyes. He turned away at once though, stepping back up to Vahatres' side. "We have gained information of a plan that has been created by two people in the government, and their associates. This plan jeopardizes the safety of our entire country, and a stop must be put to it at once.
"Last night they completed the first stage of their plan. They broke into one of our chambers of secret documents and stole the information they needed on a magical item known as the Hytorax. Have you ever heard of it before?"
"No."
"It is a magical item of tremendous destructive power. These same enemies are planning to use it in a revolution against the crown.
"On the night that they broke in, they wounded two of our guards and killed a couple others."
"What are the names of the people who are involved in this?" Hruad asked.
"The two government officials are named Hruad and Brilindil. They have several allies, one of whom is a sorceress of great power. Another is a boy, about a teenager, perhaps a little older. He is armed with daggers- we have pictures and descriptions written up of both him and the sorceress."
"I'd like to see them, and whatever else they have."
"We believe that they will be traveling toward the Barrow Downs," Dagankor said. "To steal the Hytorax, now that they know enough about it.
"On their way out, they stole several of the swiftest horses from the citadel. That will likely make them harder for you to catch, but I hope that you can manage it."
"I will try," Athalt answered. "Thank-you for the information."
*By the way, Eärniel, Imarwyn's horse is one of those that was stolen. That should keep her involved :D.*
OOC: Funny, Lief I was thinking along the same lines as soon as I read "they stole several of the swiftest horses". :D
IC:
"STOLEN?!" Imarwyn cried angrily. Several people around looked at her strangely but for once Imarwyn could not care less. She had just come down with all her luggage from the room she had been giving for the night when she heard the bad news. "Are you telling me that Merrah, MY Merrah is stolen?"
The master of the stables hardly dared to meet her gaze. "I- I really don't know how this could have happened.... The stables are always guarded and... and this has never happened before...." he said weakly.
Imarwyn grabbed the man's collar and smacked him hard against the wooden wall oft the stables. The man made a feeble protest but didn't struggle overmuch. "I don't care whether this has happened before or not!" yelled Imarwyn. "I want my horse back! These are the stables of the citadel and you're telling me that you can't even stop a simple horse thief?"
The man protested again, this time with a little more vigour. "These were not mere horse thieves. They say one of them was a sorceress. What can a normal man like me do against magic?"
"A sorceress?" spat Imarwyn as she pushed the man again against the wall with more force this time. "What would a sorceress want with MY horse?"
"I- I don't know. What do I know of the business of sorcerors?" squealed the man who was beginning to doubt that any sorceror could be worse than this angry woman. "Why don't you go and ask them?"
Imarwyn narrowed her eyes. "I think I will." she hissed and she pushed him aside and entered the stables. Inside she walked past the boxes of the horses until she found one to her liking. She opened the box and started saddling the horse. The master of the stables entered but he didn't dare to stop her. "What are you doing?" He asked uncertain.
"Since you've allowed my horse to be stolen, I'm borrowing this one until I have my own back." Imarwyn said calmly as she secured her pack on the back of the horse.
"What?" shrieked the man. "But you can't do that!" He ran over to her and attempted to pull the reigns out of her hands but Imarwyn was faster. She spun around and placed the point of her knife against the man's breast. "In my country you would have faced a terrible penalty for letting my horse be stolen. You should rather thank the gods that I let you off so easily. Now what's the name of this horse?"
"T-Tiamar." murmered the man pale-faced.
"Then I will return Tiamar when I have Merrah back and after I have taught that sorceress not to come between the rohirrim and their horses. Now get out of my way." With this comment Imarwyn sheated her knife and swung in the saddle.
Tiamar obeyed immediatly and with Imarwyn on his back the horse quickly exited the stables, leaving a very confused and worried stable master. As he watched the woman pass through the gate of the citadel the man sighed heavily. This was one more missing horse for which he would have to give an explanation. Maybe it was time he considered another job.
Athalt wheeled his horse around, toward the city gates and started toward them at a quick trot. He had thirty of his most trained soldiers with him, but he had one final errand to make before he went off on this job.
"Glimdrell!" he called to the elf as he was brought over. Athalt had sent some of his men to collect him- there were few enough elves in the world nowadays, and having one on hand could be useful.
"I need your help."
"What for?" Glimdrell asked curiously.
"I need you to help me trace a group of traitors to the realm."
"Traitors . . ."
"They are trying to use a dark magic to take control of our kingdom."
"That fits with what I have learned, and the very reason for which I've come to these parts," Glimdrell answered.
"Here is your hor-"
"I have my own horse."
Athalt nodded as he lowered the hand with which he'd been beckoning a troop to bring the animal. "Good."
He kicked his heels to his horse's sides and headed forward with his men. The thunder of galloping hooves from behind him was the only warning he had, and he turned his head to see civilians leaping out of the way to avoid being trampled by the wild horsman.
"Bad move," Athalt muttered with a small smile as the rider approached him. Quickly Athalt speeded up to match the rider's speed and laid a hand on the bridle, slowing the horse.
"Riding that fast in the city is illegal except in times of war," he told the man. A second later he realized it was Imarwyn. What could she be doing in such a tearing hurry?
"I need to get out of here fast- now! I can't waste another minute!"
"Where to?"
"To find those that stole my horse!"
Light dawned in Athalt's mind. Of course! "Then join with us- we are heading that way now. We know the direction they will be taking and will be more equipped to deal with them once we do find them than you alone would be."
"How fast are you going to be traveling?" Imarwyn wanted to know. Her eyes were locked on the city gate again.
"Very fast- we need to catch them."
"Then I will go with you," she said reluctantly.
Athalt signaled his men to press onward, and they were soon out of the city. As soon as they had passed the heavily populated area, they picked up speed, and upon leaving the outer dwellings, increased it again to a gallop.
"I can see them!" Glimdrell announced loudly. "They are far away now, many miles. It is only barely that I can see them. They are approaching a forest!"
"That has to be the forest of Dwinei," Athalt said. "We'll reach it in a day's journey at present pace."
Imarwyn's cheeks burned with anger. Her own horse. Stolen. She could imagine how hard her brothers at home would laugh if they would hear. Serves you right, Imarwyn; she told herself. You should have rejected that offer for a room in the citadel and found yourself an inn in Néred. But the more accomodating rooms in the citadel had been too tempting off course. Still, who would have thought that someone would steal horses from the stables in the citadel itself? A sorceress indeed. Imarwyn gave the stable master's words little credit. That man would have said anything to escape the blame for the theft.
Still she was glad for the presence of the company and the elf. She had acted on anger when she had heard of the theft and had not realised then that she could do little on her own. And the elf was indeed a much better tracker than she would ever be.
The company held the pace high and the forest of Dwinei came in view fast. Soon, Imarwyn told herself, soon Merrah will be back with her and than she could have a little chat with whoever had had the insane idea of stealing the horse. Imarwyn allowed herself a little smile. Oh yes, she would.
We entered The Dark forest and left the light behind.
''If we are going to the Barrow Downs then you will need me to guide you to where I saw The...What was it again?'' I asked puzzled.
''Hytorax.'' Informed BushBark.
"What did you say" Hruad asked
"Nothing, nothing" Bushbark said.
*Zavron, please remember that we're still a long way from the Barrow Downs, it'll most likely be a couple weeks before we reach them. Just reminding you, because the other trip to the Barrow Downs and back that you and Blackboar took was impossibly fast. I didn't too much care that it was impossibly fast, but this is involving the whole RPG and company, and I'd rather not have something strange like that happen that involves everyone.
Oh, and one other thing. I think that we should probably halt our company at the edge of the forest, even if we cut through it for a little while. Because this is a good entrance point for Glistenfae.*
They hadn't seen me yet but i quickly drew my sword and jumped out and grabing the first being infront of me i drew my sword under their neck. "Why are you here?! Outside my forest! Who are YOU!" I screamed.
We watched the parad go by and Asaar disapeared from sight. I saw him struggeling with a man and decided to help him. But as I approached he disapeard(sp) I wandered lost in the large crowd of Big people and as I approached a bridge I stumbled but was caught by an enormous creature. I looked at it with shock and found that it was an ent called Bushbark. Bushbark told me he would take me with him to the meeting of these soldiers after I explained to why I was here. We arrived and were instantly atmitted into the company of a powerful magic thing called a Hytorax.
I get to go on an adventure. I told myself about a hundred times. I thanked Bushbark and Boulderhead for their help and went to find Adrian and Asaar so they could explain what this Hytorax was. A big party was being held for the arrival of the soldiers and that night I heard screaming near the government hotel stables. Something about stolen horses and an angry Rohan and sorcerer.
I know it would have been intelligent for any hobbit to stay were they were after hearing such a conversation. But... I was a very curious and board hobbit who wanted to check on her pony just in case.
I walked quietly to the stables careful not to disturbe those who were sleeping. I made my way to the stables but had to back up quikly to avoid being trampled by a woman riding a horse out of the barn in great hurry. I stood dazed for a moment then went inside the barn to find a flustered but scared bald man rubbing his head. I looked around the barn and found my horse. He was sweating with fear and nuzzled me for his blankette. I gave him his blankette and was nuzzled by the horse next to him to give him his blankette. I spent half the night getting nuzzled by almost 20 horses for their blankettes. As I finished giving the horses their blankettes I returned to my pony (I forgit my ponies name) Blackpaws and saddled him up. I wanted to ride him for the first time I bought him. I have never riden a horse or pony before on my own and wanted to feel what it was like. I got on the pony and without command it bolted for the barn entrance and out the city gates. I held on for dear life, half scared and half amused. The pony loooked around wildly as though trying to find something. If only I knew what.
Blackpaws ran down the bridge and onto the dirt path following the path of muddy hoof(sp) prints in the mud. We started to go faster and faster intill I could barley tell what was a tree and what was a cottage. We continued to follow the trail in till we caught up to three riders in the distances. Not knowing who they were I was scared my pony would get us in to serious trouble. I pulled back on the reins hard but had no affect. I decided to stay quiet and pray not to be seen.
As the leaves of Dwinei gently rustled down about them, Aasinav looked over the newcomer, who held his blade to Adrian's throat.
"Your forest?" Aasinav asked, with an eyebrow raised. "Can anyone truly be said to own such a place as this? Perhaps one could be the caretaker, or call it home - but owner? I think not."
He glanced at Elise, still speaking calmly, and said, "This one seems dangerous, for all his wildness. Do you think he has some connection with the sorcerer you saw? Or is he simply... a wild man of the woods?"
Though i am as dangerous as they come! i have not yet met an enemy that i could not defeat! And once again i will say i am not a MAN!" Taking my free arm i pulled down my grey hood that covered my face. My eyes blazed as i once again looked at the strange people infront of me. "As you can plainly see I am an ELF! a FEMALE ELF at that! How dare you say i am man! could it not be that a woman could be better than a man? And what is this you speak of a sorcerer? There be no sorcerer in MY woods! Now tell me what i want to know! or ur friend here will be the first to meet their death!" I screamed at the group that stood before me still in a little bit of shock. "TELL ME! OR it will be the DEATH of you all!" I screamed again but this time thrusting my sword up into the beings neck so some blood trickled down it's neck.
Asaar moved quicker than thought. One second he was standing beside Hurad, and the next he had leapt for the elf and with a roar, quite surprising for one of his size, he kicked her in the face, knocking her back against a tree.
Asaar did a full body spin and two knives leapt from his sleeve, pinning the elvish girl's cloak to the tree.
"How DARE you!" cried Asaar in rage, his eyes radiating disbelief.
"You dare to take an innocent hobbit and threaten her life just because we stepped onto "your" forest?! Now give us your name and we'll CONSIDER letting you go!"
Hurad stepped forward quickly and moved to pull Asaar back, but Elise was quicker.
"Put that toy back in it's sheath now and stay out of this!" Elise hissed and yanked Asaar back by the hood of his cloak. "DON'T say or do ANYTHING." Elise cautioned as she saw Hurad step forward and begin talking soothingly to the elf. "We do not need her any more excited than she is."
Adrian had scrambled back to the group and was watching the elf warily, rubbing her neck and holding her handkerchief against the cut.
It appeared the elf had calmed down somewhat, yanking the daggers out and exchanging heated words for Hurad's for calm. But she looked a little saner... In a manner of speaking.
"I do hope the boy didn't mess things up too terribly..." Aasinave murrmered to Elise, rubbing his hands together in thought and knitting his brows for a second. Keeping most of his attention on the girl.
"We have agreed," Hurad said, walking back to the group with the girl behind him. "to calmly speak this thing over and figure out who is who." Hurad shot Asaar a quick warning look but it was waisted. Asaar was already speaking with Gil and helping her check on Adrian's neck, his half grin already back on his face. The young never learn...
"Now then my lady," Elise said cooly. "What is your name?"
"She has gone through enough now," Glimdrell said calmly making his way forward to the elven lady. Boulderhead let go of the elf and stepped aside, not quite understanding the situation. Giving the ontor a fierce grin, the elf turned to Glimdrell, and their eyes met. Turning to the elvish tongue he said, "Pardon my interuption, fair lady. These people will bother you no more. Me and Athalts group of soldiers from the city of Néred has come to arrest them."
Glimdrelled bowed in the way of the Lothlorian. "Fair lady of these wild woods, I am sorry for their tresspassing, but now, as I look upon the sky, I realize that we won't get home before nightfall. I am Glimdrell Silvershadow of Lothlorien, and I give you my word that we shall watch every step we take, making sure not to hurt a single grasstraw in your forest, if you let us camp here for the night." As much as Glistenfae's sudden appearance had surprised the little group, Glimdrell's presence startled them even more.
"Where did he come from?" asked Gil surprised.
"I can answer for that, I believe." came a voice from behind them. Glistenfae and Glimdrell had drawn most their attention so none had heard Athalt and his company appoaching. They had left the horses a little behind so their approach would have been silent. The thirty soldiers now stood beside Athalt, forming the half of a circle, their spears and arrows were aimed at Hruad little group. Escape would be difficult, though not impossible.
Imarwyn in the meantime had decided not to wait for a formal introduction and walked briskly over to Aasinav who still held Merrah's reigns. With a dark look at the scholar Imarwyn snatched the reigns from him and led Merrah back to the place where the soldiers were standing. There she immediatly started checking Merrah over to see if she hadn't suffered during het stay in foreign hands.
"Shall we kill them?" asked the ontor once the group had recovered from the surprises, already rasing his rocky fist for the first blow. But Hruad motioned him to stay where he was and took a step foreward. "Athalt Cranain, I believe? I had hoped to meet you in rather a different way."
"I can imagine." answered Athalt. "You are Hruad?"
"I am."
"I have been sent by command of King Vahatres...."
"And probably not by him alone." added Elise with a cool smile.
Athalt looked at her for second. He recognized her from the descriptions that Dagankor had showed him. So this was the sorceress. The old woman did not look very threatening, though Athalt knew how deceiving looks could be. He continued without acknowledging her remark. ".... You are accused of theft, murder and treason."
"What, all of that?" said Asaar amused.
"Yes, all of that. Now put down your weapons and we will take you back to Néred."
"Commander Athalt, I know you're only trying to do your duty but we can not go back to Néred. You may probably not believe it but you are misinformed. The danger for our realm doesn't lie with us but in the heart of Néred itself. Will you listen if I say that we want to help king Vahatres as much as you do?" spoke Hruad calmly.
"We do not have time for this."
"Still I must ask it, for the sake of Enedwaith. Night is falling and you can not return to Néred tonight. Let us make camp here tonight and let us explain our doings and maybe you'll see things in a different light tomorrow."
Athalt considered it. It was indeed true that night was setting in. Making camp was the best option. Hruad seemed sincere which was intriging and Athalt had not forgotten Elise's strange comment. Finally he nodded. "Very well, but you must disarm your company and keep the ontor and ent under control."
Hruad reluctantly agreed and motioned the others to lay down their weapons. A camp was made and Athalt soldiers kept watch. Glistenfae protested to lighting campfires in her wood but Glimdrell managed to convince her.
OOC: It's a bit lame, I know, and probably not how Lief would have played Athalt and Hruad but since Lief has other obligations for the moment I needed a way to bring the two groups together and Imarwyn back with the other players.
Asaar flipped out his two long knives and handed them to one of the officers with a grimace. They were beautiful knives and it would be a shame if they got dammaged by one of these people.
When no one was looking, Asaar hastily bent over, snatched the two throwing knives he had tossed at the elf, and spun them back up his sleeves with the others. He had about six throwing knives on him and four were up his sleeves. Better make them think he had given them everything...
Pulling one out of his boot, Asaar hurried back over to the man he had given his knives to.
"Sorry! I forgot this one." Asaar said with a dissarming smile.
"Oh, you can keep your eating things." The man brushed Asaar off and hurried to help with getting things set up.
Then we were taken over by an army led by Ahalt and had to give up all our weapons.
ooc: OK lame but it gets me to a good part to start off with.;)
ic:I gtave the soldier my beautiful elven knife reluctently and gave him a stare of pure venom. I saw Asaar grab his two knives from the tree were he had thrown them at the elf in anger and offer one to the officer who called it a mere eating knife. I flared at once but was happy to see one of us had means of protection. I started towards him and laughed at his sneaker ways. he laughed back when I showed him my small knife that I had hidden for just this situation of losing my weapon. it was a small knife used for cutting ropes and working. i had taken it from the hotel fishing equipment. Assar flipped his knives enthusiasticly them we made our way to Adrian who was still supporting her wound. She was fustered at the weapon Natzis:D and gave us a very short hello still keeping her eye on the bag of weapons.
I knew Adrian like Aragorn never liked anyone else having possesion of their weapons. We sat down next to each other and talked about the Glistenfae and Glimdrell.
"A real elf. I always wanted to meet and elf and here now I have a chance. But maybe I should wait in till tension goes down between us and Athalts army."
"yeh" both my friends agreed.
A fire was lit against the approval of Glistenfae and we watched the golden flames jump merrily in the rock incircled fire place. I looked up in a dazed half dream state at the trees and felt drowsy from the smells of the odd plants. But as if from a hobbit unknown sense of oncoming danger I felt my hair tingle on the back of my neck. I looked dazedly over at a shadowy part of the forest near a running stream far of and saw two brightly shinning eyes gazing around then seemeing to disapear into the shadows. The eyes made the sound around me go away and instead was replaced the the eery sound of running water and a voice calling out to an invisible messenger. Things semed to get cold around me evn though I was near the forest. Then I came back to focous looking up into the eyes of the shadowy creature... no..
"Are you all right, child? You seemed disturbed." His voice was calming, but Gil still shivered as she looked back into the woods, remembering those eyes.
"There - in the woods!" She paused, noticing that the image was gone. She shook her head. "I saw... I thought it was the enemy - the Sorcerer, watching us. But it isn't there now."
"Hmm." Aasinav frowned. "I sense darkness is abroad tonight. Perhaps it was our foe, watching us... or sending a message."
He shook his head, and then shrugged. "Hopefully all will be clearer in the morning. And hopefully morning will bring a resolution to this situation with Athalt and his men. In any case - you may wish to share what you saw with Elise and Hruad. For myself, I will be catching some rest - and recommend you do the same. Certainly something dark is out there..."
He trailed off, and then left Gil to her musings, and to staring out into the dark shadows of the wood.
"Dagankor," whispered the cold voice in the "counciler's" private room, and the sorcerer looked up. Ahead of him floated a shadowy form, cloaked in a robe of darkness, with no features visible to the eye.
"Ah," Dagankor replied. "It's you."
"What news have you to report to the order? I came to... check up on your progress." The voice was cold and emotionless, ignoring Dagankor's taunt.
"All proceeds smoothly. A band of adventurers seeks out the Hytorax, while the kingdom's soldiers chase them - and should easily deal with them, I am sure."
"Your soldiers are not nearly as controlled as you think they are, Dagankor. I suspect that this ... fellowship... of adventurers, shall be released by them. Your control of the kingdom has not been as subtle as some would have liked."
Dagankor gave a low bow, and replied, with a hiss, "We all know how you like to operate, watcher. But you cannot argue that my methods have been anything less than effective. The kingdom is firmly in my grasp, after all."
The dark form seemed to draw in upon itself. "Very well then. Continue to maintain your position, and I shall continue to monitor how things go. And let the Red Flame triumph."
As the form vanished, Dagankor bowed again, and responded softly, "And let the Red Flame triumph." However much he and his colleagues might battle amongst themselves, and strive for power within their internal hierarchy, they were banded together in a common goal and for common ends - and many plans, long lain dormant, were coming to fruition.
As people settled about the camp, Glimdrell walked over to the elven laidy who was sitting a little outside the circle of soldiers and captives surrounding the fire. Sitting down at her side she asked him who these soldiers was, and who himself was.
As she spoke he understood this elf had been, like himself, not too socialised with other elves or men. She was speaking quenya, the ancient language, made in the days of the firstborn, not the common elven tongue, Sindarin.
"These men are soldiers of the capitol of Enedwaith. Sent on a mission by the king to capture these strange people who was threathening you. Only little do I know of them, for it has only been few days we have walked the same road... Pointing over at a man standing by the fire, Glimdrell said, "that is Athalt, the leader of the group. A hero in the kingdom, and a hard man he is indeed." Rising from the crowd was the rohirrim. "And that is Imarwyn, the rohirrim. Little do I know of the other soldiers..."
The elf nodded and waited for Glimdrell to continue...
"As I have already told you, I am Glimdrell Silvershadow, elf from Lothlorien as my looks must tell you. The Silent Assassin I was once called in those lands." Widdening her eyes, the elf looked at Glimdrell in amazement. Then she quinted. "Seldom do they speak of him
For few of them has seen him
Though most of them has felt him
and his gleaming silverdagger
in their back
They know to fear him
They know to flee him
Glimdrell Silvershadow
From the west..."
She smiled, "A true legend of old you are, if you are whom you claim to be," the elf said. "Long has it been though since I last heard your name spoken, and long back in memory your name laid indeed, still I saw something about you at your first apearance earlier." Glimdrell nodded aprisiativly, "I still did not catch your name..." Glimdrell said, fixing his sitting position...
Suddenly Glimdrell turned his eyes into the woods as he felt a sudden inch of horror going through him, realizing the elf did just the same. "Something evil is at hand here tonight," Glimdrell whispered...
Glimdrell spoke, "Something wicked. Something dark. Something hidden."
"It is gone now," said Elise, peering about.
Aasinav nodded. "I tried to track it, but could find nothing. Merely a watcher, I think - for now. One of the hobbits saw a dark shape in the woods - a shadowy sorcerer, as she described it. I told them not to burden themselves with worry over it, and to speak with you of it in the morning - but wanted to investigate more tonight."
And why did you keep the others from killing me? In a way i'd much so prefer death or captivity! This is ridiculous and i shall not stand for much more! ic: I was caught from my daze by the kind word of Aasinav. As he told me I went to Elise for answers. I found her by the fire musing to herself of the Hytorax and something about "Stupid soldiers not knowing who they were dealing with holding us up like this."
I approached her causly(sp) so not to startle her or myself. I sat next to her and told her quietly what I had seen.
"You probably saw a messanger of the Red Flame watching our company." She said wisely.
"It seemed as if it saw me and wanted me to come to it and..."
I could not finish.
The two elves lifted their heads and looked at the forest and seemed to have the same sense as she did.
I decided I would tell my two friends and see if I could find the creature myself. I snuck over to the bag of weapons and with the footsteps of a steathy hobbit she snatched up her dagger and stalked away in the same quiet manner.
She made her way to the forest and as she neared the place of which she saw and felt the eyes she stumbled opone a muddy river and foot prints disturbed the earth. The foot prints were not of orcs though but smaller and had a lesser pace. The prints seemed almost... wolf like.
Then behind Gil came a heavy breathing that felt hot and damp on the back of her neck. She slowly turned around and was face to face with a large wolf. The wolf was black as night and showed its large set of teeth as it panted in respond to her squeel of fright.
Gil immediatly slashed the wolf with her dagger and tried to escap but was bit on the shoulder before she got at least a leap away.
"You should not travel into the woods like this." Glimdrell said fitting his bow back on the back before he lifted his surcoat up from the grass and swong it around him. "How did you see me leave the camp?" Gil replied, still struggeling. "I have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox," Glimdrell said with a grim smile, remembering the insident with the dwarf in Lothlorien. He helped to drag the dead wolf away and helpt the hobbit up. "Get up on you feet now. Were you bitten?" Gil took his hand away from his wounded shoulder. Glimdrell sighed. "The wolf took a good bite of you. Be more carefull next time, or else you'd end up on someones dinnertable before long." He got some herbs from his pouch and tended the wound. "Now, back to the camp we go." Together they walked back to the camp.
"Only a wolf," Gil said as they approached. "Could have been alot worse!" Glimdrell walked over to Glistenfae again.
"Indeed it could," Glimdrell said . Turning to Glistenfae he said, "Ah, I do not think they have any intention of holding you captive, if it wasn't for you we would still be hunting them through the forest. Though you should be more careful on whom you put on the wrong side of your knife. Hatred and anger will only bring you darkness and sorrow in the end, and in your heart you know it..."
Then he walked over to Adrian, getting some healing herbs from his pouch...
ic: Glimdrell rushed out from the camp just as the wolf cornered me between two trees and was ready for a pounce. The wolf stopped suddently and I heard a soft sworsh and the wolf colapsed on top of me. All of its weight was burrying me in fur and blood from the wound. I struggled to get from beneath it but was helped in the end by Glimdrell.
After my wound was tended to and the worried elf questioned my foolishness I thanked him and left to go tell Assar what had happend. For before seeing the wolf I had seen an even brighter pair of eyes.
Not evil but unknown to me.
They seemed almost curious and of new and more ancient a light then that of any I have ever seen.
I was cut on my neck but I didn't care. I had had alot worse before. Even the prospect of being poisoned didn't seem as bad as hitting my right shoulder and oppening the old wound that still had poison in it and would turn me into a ringwraith. I had told nobody that my wound still held poison in it. They thought I was totally disarmed but I wasn't. I still had Swift, my staff, my shifters charm necklace, and some wepons that could only be seen if I shifted into a certain form. Gleamer(sister sword to Sting) was one of those items. I wouldn't hurt anything anyway. I only wanted to get this over with so that I could go get started on my training. I moved away when Glimdrell tried to put healing herbs on my neck. I definately would not be healed by anyone but myself, and I was waiting till the time was right. I wanted to get away to Gondor but I could not abandon Gil and Asaar. I was questioned as to why I would not except to be healed by Glimdrell and I said, "I have had worse, if I hit my right shoulder and my old wound breaks open, then is the time to worry. It still has poison in it from long ago. I will turn into a wraith if it isn't taken care of in time. Be prepared for if that happens." There I had said it. Everyone was stairing at me.
Imarwyn saw the elf bringing back the escaped hobbit into the camp. The guards looked surprised to see them turn up from the outside of the camp. "Fools." muttered Imarwyn. She had to conclude that the group Athalt's soldiers had captured was not just your ordinary band of traitors. One thing was the strange make up of the group; a young boy, an old woman, two hobbits, a scholar, an ontor, an ent and two politicians. She figuered out that the she-elf was no actual part of the group. Now she could understand about the politicians, they usually had some treacherous streaks in them but the rest didn't immediatly struck her as conspirators.
A second point was that they all looked too comfortable, they had been exposed and captured and they didn't even look very worried. Perhaps they all had much faith in Hruad or it was something else. Imarwyn suspected that some of them still harbored weapons. She turned and looked to where Athalt sat talking to Hruad. They apparantly hadn't noticed the little excursion of the hobbit. She wondered what was discussed between the two fo them, the look on their faces was very solemn indeed.
Imarwyn sighed deeply. "It doesn't look like we'll get a lot of sleep this night." she said to herself. So maybe it's time that she found out for herself what was going on. She decided to ask the scholar, after all she felt that the man owed her an explanation for stealing her horse and hopefully he would tell her more. She walked over to him, he heard her coming and looked up. "Mind telling me why you stole my horse?" she asked straight away.
I made up my mind not to squash anyone just yet and see where this person called athalt does with us. The only thing I knew that I was definitely not being taken prisoner.
I looked over at BushBark who had also been driven into a corner and was guarded.
''Hmmm...BushBark? What is goin on?'' I asked rubbing my head which was now sore from thinking too much.
''I have no Idea!? All I know is that we aren't going anywhere soon.'' He replied.
I sat down miserably and started to hum a tune.
Aralle and Rainstorm raced across the land, seeking the people that Aralle was to find. Who they were, she didn't know. She only knew where she must go to meet them, and that she should use caution.
This was not unusual for Aralle. For most of her life, joining in certain quests had been her mission, her purpose. She would go where she was needed, and knew she would continue to do so for as long as she lived. And she did know where she was needed. She could sense it. It was as if she were called; led to a place or a person with whom she would journey on the next quest.
Aralle got to the outskirts of a dense forest, and the calling stopped abruptly. Then she knew that this was where she would find them. She brought Rain to a halt and got off of him.
When she listened carefully, Aralle could hear that someone was speaking, though she couldn't make out the words. She decided to watch for awhile before revealing her presence to this group. More than once, she had been led to a company after they had been captured by enemies, and from this she had learned it was safest to check out the situation before going in.
Pushing her light brown hair from her eyes, she crept forward and crouched down in a grove of trees, watching the camp. Her eyes would shine brightly, she knew, as they always did when Aralle used her natural griffin sight, rather than relying on the much poorer sight of a woman. This was the one thing about Aralle that would give away the fact that she was not what she seemed.
Aralle watched the group, noting who was in it. Several Men, at least two elves, some hobbits, an-an ent?! And one of a race that she did not recognize. All in all, a very unusual company.
Aralle hoped that a few of the people in that group, or even one person, would come nearer to her. Then she might learn more about the situation from that one, without the danger that simply walking into the middle of that group would bring.
In a little while, Aralle got her wish. One of the hobbits came walking out of the group toward her. Aralle remained in the trees, waiting.
Before the young hobbit could reach Aralle, she was intercepted by a wolf. Aralle quickly returned to using her human sight, so that her eyes wouldn't glow, and got ready to charge in and help the hobbit.
Then someone raced over and shot the wolf in the head -- it was one of the elves, Aralle thought, though it was much harder to tell without her griffin's sight.
Aralle breathed a sigh of relief and continued to hide. She didn't yet know enough to be certain she could safely approach the camp.
Aralle began to use her griffin sight again, watching, learning all she could, and waiting for the right moment to introduce herself.
Noble lady? thought Imarwyn with a smile. It had been a while since she had been called noble. His praise for Merrah pleased her but she knew better than to let it cloud her judgement. He paused, hesitating, and then look carefully into Imarwyn's eyes. "Perhaps I should not tell this tale in the open, but you seem trustworthy, and my judgement is rarely wrong about such things. We fled Néred after an encounter with an evil sorcerer. We had suspected already that dark forces were at work in the kingdom - as the provinces began to sink into misery, and the court began to obey a new voice. Our suspicions were confirmed - such a sorcerer was, indeed, now the advisor to the king. Unfortunately he learned of us as well, and we fled to escape him, and find the one item that could break his spell."
Looking around, he gestured to the many soldiers surrounding the party, and gave a sad smile. "Yet our speed, apparently, was not enough. Athalt seems like an honest man, and hopefully he will see our tale for truth. Yet if not, I fear that Enedwaith is doomed..."
"I have two of my knives from tossing it at the elf lady."
"Oh"
"There is no point to stay in this camp sight while there is a creature still out there. I mean what if it is evil and comes to kill us off guard."
Assar could see right through all my lies and knew I wanted to just leave the camp again. We both were to use to going out on adventures and could not saty uin one spot at a time. Especially when we were not working. Thats why we have taken to stealing from Maggot even though we never ate our prize of stolen shrooms.
We wandered out of the camp traveling through the shadows of the fire and staying well away form the elves and guards. I noticed the ent and the ontore were getting board. I was thinking to going to see if they wanted to join us but knew it would be too much destraction having to leave the camp with the two large creatures. I turned and led Asaar to the wooded area were I saw the eyes and once more felt the swamp beneath my feat and almost vomitted with the thought of what was living in those waters. Aralle continued to watch the company until she heard voices getting closer and closer to her. Swiftly, she stopped using her griffin sight and turned to see who the speakers were.
There were two of them. One was a very young man; a boy, really. The other was the female hobbit Aralle had seen earlier, the one who had been attacked by a wolf. The griffin could see that neither of these beings was a threat to her.
There was one problem, however. Both of the people had probably seen her eyes glowing, and that would tell them that Aralle was no ordinary woman; that she was not of the race of Men at all.
Of course, they wouldn't know that Aralle was a griffin -- the griffin, last of her kind. Few even knew of the existence of griffins, and only the greatest wizards knew of those with Aralle's abilities.
At any rate, Aralle had to speak to them now. She must let them know that she wasn't an enemy. Cautiously, she approached the boy and the hobbit.
I flew over head and landed on the leaves of the trees above the fire I had seen in the distance. I looked down into a clearing and saw many strange creatures. Men, elves, Two hobbits, an ent, and something I had never seen before. I also noticed a Griffin! I was of the species that destroyed their race. All my people had a deep Anger and Hatred of the creatures but I didn't. I felt sorry for them, but there was no more of my Race either. They had also gone forever and I was the last of their Kind. I was a Gargoyle. Gargoyles were close relationship to Griffins.
I was flying over-Head, beating my Large Black, jagged, torn Wings. I used my special vision to see better. I went in for a closer look. I watched and then my Eyes met with the Griffin's. I pulled back up into the skies, but it was too late. The damage had been done, she knew I was about.
Aralle was suddenly aware of the presence of a dreaded enemy in the sky. She glanced up, and gasped in horror to see what the creature was. A gargoyle!
While gargoyles were somewhat similar to griffins, the two races were, in many ways, exact opposites. Both were drawn to danger, but the gargoyles came to aid the Shadows, fighting for destruction rather than freedom and peace.
Thus the gargoyles had become the worst enemies of the griffins, and the two races fought a great war. The gargoyles had won, but losses on their side were so heavy that everyone thought they would probably go extinct, too. Apparently there were still survivors, and now they knew of her presence.
Gargoyles always knew when griffins were around, even griffins like Aralle, skin changers. Just as any griffin would know when a gargoyle was around. Aralle had very little time now; she must speak to the hobbit and the boy to find out what was going on.
"My name is Aralle. What are you doing in these woods?" She continued to gaze at the sky every now and then, watching for the gargoyle.
Night eventually fell upon the company, and their talks and banters slowly faded away. It had been a good opportunity to learn a bit more about each other - but all their conversations were overshadowed with worry for the morning, and what fate it would bring for them.
Athalt remained up, late into the night, staring out into the deep darkness of the woods. Though his features showed little, he was wrestling with his decision, struggling to decide what he could and could not believe.
When the morning sun dawned, he remained awake - and had made his choice. He called for the party to rise even as he gathered his soldiers.
Hruad woke the others, and some rose willingly - anxious to learn the decision - while others were roused from their beds much less easily. Eventually, they all stood out in the clearing, surrounded by Athalt and his soldiers.
"I have reached my decision," said Athalt in a clear voice, "and though your words cast worry and doubt in my ear, I saw firsthand the chaos left by your departure."
Hruad stepped forward. "I hope you aren't saying what I think you are - I have told you of our plight, and the danger we are trying to face!"
Athalt sighed, and continued, "I know not how much truth their is to your words, but I cannot let you walk free on them alone. It is my duty - I must return you to my king."
The talk she had had with Aasinav the night before still disturbed her. The rohirrim had had dealings with evil sorcerors before and they were not fond of them. It was only then that Aralle realized how foolish she had been. He could be waiting for other gargoyles! Now she was out in the forest alone; no one even knew what she was facing. And if she died, none would be left to warn the group back at camp about the gargoyles.
Aralle couldn't win against several gargoyles, and she knew it. Her only hope was if she was wrong.
Yet somehow knowing she'd have no control over the situation gave Aralle a sense of peace. She decided to speak to the gargoyle; they had always loved to brag, especially to enemies, and it couldn't really make things worse.
If there were other gargoyles coming, she'd probably wind up dead, whatever happened in the meantime. But if the gargoyle was alone, and Aralle could gather information about his mission here, it would be very useful to the company.
Without hesitation, she broke into a run, going at full speed back towards the camp. In her desire for haste, she forgot to use her Sight before returning to camp, and would have run blindly into a terrible situation, save for one thing... Aralle never reached her destination.
About halfway back to the camp, Aralle tripped and fell on a large boulder in her way.
Fool! she scolded herself again. Her fear of the gargoyle had made her reckless. You can't afford to be careless. Aralle got up and was about to set off again at a slower pace, when someone whispered a warning that made her stop in her tracks.
ooc: And now you can decide whose cue that is! :)
"I shan't go back if i were you, though you may want to plan a rescue for them, they shall not last much longer i presume from what i can catch from the guards they wish to leave soon or to slaughter some but i could have heard that wrong. I shall help you in rescuing them if you wish it of me, for your kind has saved me once and i shall like to repay the deed."
Aralle looked over at the speaker, startled. It was the female elf! And the elf had met other griffins, which meant she was very old.
"They have been taken captive, then?" Aralle sighed. "Thank you. Yes, I will need all the help in rescuing them that I can get!" Even in her true form (which she would probably have to assume in order for this rescue to work), she was very unlikely to be able to do this on her own.
ooc: Aralle (being very young at the time of the war between her race and the gargoyles) would not recognize/remember Glistenfae.
ooc: Can my character do anything?
ic: Tension rose as everyone was to busy arguing with the commander to notice that the Griffin was gone. I looked around but found nothing of the Griffin. I tried to escape from the group but was caught by thje scruff by a very ruff soldier. I swung and kicked angrily at the captore but he simply laughed and set me down next to Bushbark who looked at the soldier angrily and then at me with sympothy.
"This is not fiar." I said to him.
"No, It is not." He agreed. And the ontore nodded.
Adrian made a cry of anger at the soldiers act and rushed foreword to attack. She balzed with fury and cut the soldier in the leg as he tried to back away. Another soldier rushed foreword but was pushed back by Asaar who did not like the act eather.
I took my chance and took my elven knife and cut the hand of the pursuing soldier of Asaar. Soon everyone bounded foreword in attack to defend the others. Each time one of the componies friend joined in and they were in danger another person joined to defend that one.
Aasinav shook his head at the sight as the other companions engaged the soldiers, especially once he saw blood being drawn. They were, perhaps, only trying to aid each other - but as the soldiers saw one of their own go down, their faces turned grim and black as they charged to surround the prisoners.
Hruad's eyes widened as he saw what was going on, and he rushed forward, trying to calm the others down. "Please, my friends, listen to reason - you are outnumbered, and this will only get us hurt - hope has not yet been lost!"
Elise hurried to Athalt's side as he drew his own blade and strode toward the melee. "Call your men off, and perhaps we can end this without any more blood being shed."
He shook her off. "Stand aside! I trusted you through the night, but this only serves to prove my decision right - I'll not let this go on any longer."
She narrowed her eyes, and planted herself in his path. "I told you to stand down."
As her gaze met his, he staggered back a little - but he was a hardened veteran, and had been through much in his life. He managed to regain himself, and stepped forward again.
Aasinav shook his head again, and then stepped forward, since it seemed unlikely the battle would end on its own.
He strode forward, into the center of the the camp, and spoke - and each word grew in volume until the last one echoed through the clearing like a thunderbolt: "That is quite ENOUGH!"
Everyone froze as the echo of the words faded away, and Hruad managed to make his way through the soldiers to stand in front of his companions.
"Put down your weapons," he cried, gesturing around him. A few soldiers had been injured - but they outnumbered the small party three to one, and lives would easily be lost if the fighting continued.
A few soldiers stepped forward, but Athalt's voice rang out as well. "Stand down. Don't attack them unless they continue to fight - this morning has grown dark enough already."
He glanced at those who had struck out. "Well? I truly do not wish to harm any of you - but if you continue fighting, I will not have any choice."
"Well then, seems like were all alone really on this. How shall we accomplish this task? We could attack and some how throw what weapons were taken back to the others and hope that we escape? We could plan it throughly so they have their eyes on one of us while the other grabs the weapons and gives them back? We could take them slowly and tie them up or cut some of their throats? Or we could come up with another plan! What do you think? Do you have any ideas?" I asked Arrale.
I was told to quit fighting, but Swift had not been called off, in the midst of my anger I had forgotten about him. Then I saw him creaping up behind a soldier so that none could see him. "Swift!" I called just before he attacked, he stopped and I cleared my head of angry thoughts.0 "Come here and stop this nonsence," I called to him quietly, he came and I shifted into a wizard. I wantedto talk o him and this was the easiest way. They did not ask for my staff.
ic: Aasinav called for us to quite our battle and at once everyone headed his command even the soldiers from the opposite side. Swift was called back and Poko cam out from cowering in the shadows of the trees. (Silly grayhound) The horses reapproached the camp sight from their shock and neihd happily at its end.
"Our task is too impoatant for us to be held back any longer." I yelled out to the on looking group.
"The Hytorax could be calling the enemy as the one ring did to Sauron As I have read." The group gasped at the thought of the evil ring and muttered among themselves.
"Please we are not enemies and only wish to get on with our task for its importance is great. Why do you think we were allowed to leave Nered after council if the king thought it was a bad idea and wanted us locked up or held back?"
Glimdrell laughed heartedly at the hobbits shoutout. "As far as I am informed you left Néred secretly. The king and his men can not halter thee he can not see! It would be foulish to state otherwise." Glimdrell shook his head at the hobbit, and said with a more seriouse voice: "Stop with your silly tricks and make the way back easier, delay us no more. Athalt has his orders and are bound to follow them! It is his kings command!"
