Hey mooters,
does anyone think gandalf the white looks slightly tacky?! with his newly bleached beard (AHHHHHHHHHH not the beard!) and his toys-r-us staff...?! #
he looks like a moron, not like a newly promoted head of the Istari! but alas, who am i to judge?

He is one of my favourite characters (is depicted better in p.j's films than anyone could have ever expected) and i feel a bit guilty bringing him down like this, but surely with the multi million pound budget they could have come up with something better...but alas, who am i to judge?!

i havent seen the film yet coz its not out here but of what i saw of gandalf i thought it looked awesome... the robes that they made for him looked great in the making of... and he lost that damn hat. i think his new do made gave him a bit more grandeur and he didnt look like such a roughnut anymore but very refined...
but as i said havent seen it so wont press it further

Well, I wish he'd kept the hat, but other than that, he looked fine to me. Actually, he looked more than fine...FREAKN AWESOME!!! Ok, that may be overdoing it a bit...

I thought Gandalf looked really good! I also happened to like his cool hat. (I heard that Ian McKellan didn't like wearing it though...) He did look pretty funny in the first scene that you accually get to see his face! His eyes were all wide open as if he were trying not to squint in to some glare. Also he is/was never wearing sneakers/trainers! You can see clearly in the scene at Edoras when they de-posses Theoden of Saruman that he is wearing some sort of soft whitish leather moccasins that lace up. They are not infact sneakers or trainers. How does Gandalf's staff turn white after he returns as Gandalf the white?

he gets a new one... i suppose when he goes to Lothlorien and gets re-robed... he broke his old one on the Bridge of Khazad Dum in the books didnt he??

I miss his hat!! And I do't know why but he seems to be more of a leader and more important in FotR!!

I tihk Gandalf the White was portrayed well for the movies, were he is looked upon as simply 'a good Wizard'. Nothing has been said about the power the Istari had in the Movies. However, if PJ was trying to recreate the books, Gandalf was not given full justice.

i think the white looked pretty good but he looked better as Gandalf the Grey...you were a little harsh on the staff thing

Amandil
12-27-2002, 12:59 PM
I think all the staffs (Saruman's, Gandalf the Grey's, Gandalf the White's) looked stupid. What's with the gay doodley-doos on the top of them all? (In fact, I think most of the key characters' personal effects were pretty loserish. The coolest looking arms and armour are always on the normal slobs.)

The bleached beard was tolerable, I guess, as is the loss of the hat. Oh well. I always did like Gandalf the Grey better, so I'm bound to be disappointed then! :)

Gandalf the grey?

I think you mean Gandalf the filthy!

Now as far as staffs go (or is that staves?) Gandalf the white should have a tube of cheezwhiz on his staff, so he can throw it (in slow motion) at the witch king of Angmar.

Later to be defended in this form as a necessary cinamtic deviation.

Amandil
12-27-2002, 01:16 PM
LOL at the cheez whiz! You make your point with characteristic temerity, of course, but you make it well.

Staves, of course, staves. I'm ashamed of myself.

I should have been a tad clearer, too: I always did like Gandalf the Grey better in the books. Can't say that I really give a flying rats behind about the Grey one or the White one in PJ's movies, when all is said and done.

I thought Gandalf the White was great! I don't know if he really needed that haircut, but I don't think he looked tacky at all.

His robes were really nice, and he still looked very kick-ass and wise.

I didn't actually notice his staff in TTT. This is probably bad, since Gandalf the Grey had an amazing staff.

Not that I didn't like him as Gandalf the Grey!
They should leave him as Gandalf the White with his old Hat!!

I thought that Gandalf the White was done very well. Although he did look slightly silly when you first saw him, and he had his eyes open so wide! I really liked the scene where he rides down the mountain on Shadowfax to save Rohan at Helm's Deep. Was that a stunt double? or was it really Ian Meckellen?

I would think riding down a hill that steep would either be completely computer-generated or computer-modified (I dunno, maybe they ride on flat land and it's just rotated?). Anyways, I believe on Ian McKellen's site, he stated that on most wide-shots he would have a stunt double.

Welcome Iron McFist... let's *not* shake hands. nice sig btw

I will see it again tomorrow. I wasn't sure about how much I liked Gandalf's charge. The steep slope and the organized orcs were a bit distracting even though it was a great moment in terms of drama.

Cinematically, I thought they did a pretty good job lighting the new (and supposedly improved) Gandalf. A tad overdone at parts ... wait, scratch that, the only really glaringly alarming use of lightbulbs was in Gandalf's first appearance, and the light had to be bright enough to blind Aragorn and company... all right, never mind the light. Generally it succeeded in making Gandalf appear greater and different from the previous film.
I would also like to applaud the costumes department. Gandalf the White definitely resembles Saruman, but retains his good guy qualities in appearance as well as character. The staff... now that I think about it, it did bear a shocking resemblance to white plastic. Alas. You've just ruined the entire movie.
And any ideas on why exactly he now has layered hair?

BeardofPants

Because he wanted a "Rachel"?

Nurvingiel

Layered hair... because he needed to be different from our beloved scruffy Gandalf the Grey? He was sent back with a prettier haircut? He trimmed his beard too. Maybe the Balrog singed it... ;) hehe

Let it be said, truly justice was not Gandalf in the movies.
Shame! Gandalf is the very fulcrum of the Free Peoples defenses and is the single most important character in LotR. Now I really don't like the films. Shame!
Long live the Dwarves! *ThorinOakenshield*

Poor Radagast, and it was always his favourite colour...

Now that I think of it, he did look kind of bad, didn't he? I was more amused by his "That was my name." line, not for the line, but because of the way he said it and the way he looked - he seemed so proud of himself!

I liked Gandalf the Grey better as well. He looked much better with the hat, and it was nice to not go blind every time you saw him.

Nurvingiel

Large welcome Andnólëiel!

I agree, they did kind of overdue it with the white light. Especially in the excorcism of Theoden - idiotic scene.

Lady of Rivendell

That was the only scene that I wasn't really happy with ( refering to the " Possesion of Theoden" scene ). Why did they have to do that? =-)

I thought Gandalf the White was done well for the most part ( besides the exception noted above ). However, I'm a big fan of the movie and those who didn't like it would be more inclined than I to find fault with Gandalf's new look!=-)

i cannot beleive this i have now seen it so i will press further he looked amazing sure he didnt have as much in the movie but he wasnt in that much of the book (i mean to where they are up to in the movie) he was off getting erkenbrand for aa fair bit...
he seems to be more of a leader and more important in FotR!!
thats because he was the leader in the Fellowship and in this one he gathers arms and fights what could be better than seeing Gandalf charging down on shadowfax with Eomer to Theodens side...
there was only one bit concerning gandalf that i didnt like and that was that gay Black Beuty scene when he call shadowfax on the edges of Fangorn and that was the damn horses fault not his... the bit with Theoden was good in the fact that it showed his becoming The White by beating Saruman down, they had to do that because they didnt include the staff breaking... if you want to find something to complain about in that scene complain about Legolas' crappy punches, he only lands one good elbow and that when the camera zooms up to him...
He probably quit smoking, too.
i dont think you have anythng to worry bout there cirdan, have you watched the extended fellowship with commentary, apparently some people wanted to have gandalf not smoke but he fought for Gandalf's pipeskill to be included... good ols Ian mcKellen

I saw TTT again, and this time I noticed Gandalf's new staff. I didn't think it was too bad. However, squinteyedsoutherner made a hilarious comment on the first page of this thread about Gandalf having a cheeze whiz staff.

During the stupid exorcism of Theoden scene I kept imagining Theoden saying, "Waaugh! He's whipping cheeze whiz at me!"

Haha!

Well, sure, Gandalf looked kind of bad. But he didn't look absolutely awfully fake!! I think some of the Elves looked like that. But don't mind me, it's just my opinion. I thought the part where Gandalf was fighting the Balrog ((after he fell)) was really scary, and after that I respected him. When you compare him with Aragorn, Legolas, and Frodo, he looks completely awful, but when he's off on his own, it's not really that bad. I just don't think he should get to ride the prettiest horse ((Shadowfax)). Hehe.... ~~F. G.

I wish they had shown more of Gandalf and Shadowfax! That scene with the Balrog was pretty scary... what really freaked me out was when you see them falling into that big pool of water! It was done kinda in slow-motion I think, or that might have been a trick of my mind...:)

I liked old Gandalf better than new, but the new one is still awesome in his own way! New staff; yes. Plastic Barbie staff; No.
New hair; yes. Barbie hair; No. Did PJ do a terrible job portraying him this time around? No! He portrayed him in the best way that he could and how he pictured him. Naturally, someone else's portrayal of a character is going to be different from your own! Gandalf did not look fake, just dramatically different.

And the things on the top of the staves are not gay. (In fact, I don't think any inannimate object can be homosexual. :) ) Personally, I thought the things on top of the staves were actually pretty cool.

But all of this is of course my own opinion. :)

Couldn't really see Gandalf the White... too dang bright! My friends and I have joked that in between lives he must have gotten dentures.

But seriously, I like the new look. I'm just glad that they portrayed him as being noticably different from his Gray incarnation. That's mostly what I was looking for since I got such a sense of change in the book.

Darn shame about seeing spots before my eyes after every one of his scenes, though. ;)

My opinion is tainted, as to Gandalf's hair, because I know the hair and beard are wigs. Maybe they look totally real to an untrained eye.

They really aren't that bad though.

That is because he is a lot cooler, and looks more realistic as Gandalf the grey! And because people are used to calling him that. It's like right after someone getts married, you keep wanting to call them miss. smith (or whatever) even though in the back of your mind you know they are now Mrs. Peolski (or whatever!) See! Aren't I good at explaining things!?:) :D
