I saw this book on a shelf in WHSmith. ( A book, mag, food store etc) It was called Bored of the Rings. I haven't read it but if any one has then please give their views on it.

It's a parody. I've heard an excerpt out loud, and it seemed really funny...

It is hilarious. First time I read it, I was on a flight from Georgia, to Ohio. I burst out laughing. It was one of the funniest Tolkien parodies I ever read. Trust me, if you know Tolkien, it is funny, if not,. it is meaningless.

Well, if you burst out laughing in public then it must be good! Thanks.

I read it years ago, and it made me laugh out loud. Especially the bit where
the ringwraiths fall about laughing at Stomper's broken sword, allowing the boggits to kick them all in the goolies
oh and the bit where
Galadriel offers sexual favours in exchange for the Ring
I seem to recall that it ended up taking its own story a bit to seriously, though.

It was funny, but I have to admit there were bits I just didn't get at all! Maybe I'm too young to get some of the references. When was it first published?

Oh its hilarious!!! I leant it to my music teacher after I'd read it and he's never looked at me the same way since. I read it in the common room at school and kept getting really dirty looks when I burst out laughing every five minutes. Its a brilliant read though not as good as the original of course. Mx

Why do I get grayed out bars in of Duandan's post (2nd & 4th lines) and in Arwen's post (after the lol...)? Is it some activeX content rejected by my browser security settings?

It's a setting you can do in your posts to blank out spoilers for those who don't want to read them. If you do want to read them, just highlight the grey bars and you will see text.

Bored of the Rings may be the single associated piece of literature that i have read outside of the Lord of the Rings besides the hobbit and tolkien's letters. it surprised me that few others would acknowledge it's existance. i think it's always a sign of strength when you can still stand solidly when being criticized. the Lord of the Rings is still read and loved by millions all over the world and it really bothers me that people would shut out different perspectives. i'm glad THIS site appreciates that. =)

I believe that though LOTR is a wonderful masterpiece, it is ok to make fun of it. Everyone needs to have a little comedy in their lives. This book is an hilarious parody of LOTR, though it is not suitable for children, adults will find it quite entertaining. Tolkien himself might have even found it somewhat funny. In LOTR there is so little humor, except for moments of spontaneity where Sam, Merry, and Pippin are concerned. I would suggest that anyone who is an avid reader of Tolkien should read this parody, but remember have an open mind going into it.

Not from the original book but there is someones version of a parody of Ap. A and The Souring of the Shire -

It's pretty funny and definitly cut from the same vien as Bored of the Rings

As I said on another thread (and for some reason got totally balled out and the thread closed mimble mimble, only trying to make contact, mumble brurarum...) I found a few moments funny, but altogether I found the humour immature and the book rather pointless and dull. It wasn't so much as a parody as a story slightly based on LotR. I've read funnier things on the back of a penguin bar I'm afraid.
Strangely enough though it did seem to have influenced the film quite a lot though.....

I see I haven't added my humble opinion.

You could look at the book in terms of humour, and yes, its isn't that funny, but as a parody it isn't that bad...
Remember, the writers have the utmost respect for Tolkien, so I wouldn't take it to seriously...
The only question that should be asked is.... Is it funny? Thats the whole object of the book, to make you laugh..

Hmm I wonder if the large and ponderous Lord of the Whatever...will adapt that for its own. Of course that parody makes far less sense.

But that just the point. They weren't making fun of him... If you read it, it does say they respected and greatly admired Tolkiens work...
Just a bit of fun thats all... (not at Tolkiens expense though) :D

I've seen it in Waterstones bookstore. It is very funny, the bits that I read. I have only flipped through it though.

It doesn't even really hang together as a book in it's own right. In all, not close enough to the original to be a parody and not funny enough to be a comedy.

I got it from Santa this xmas and have started reading it. It is DEFINITELY a parody, and funny too. However, it does end up taking its own story too seriously and the comedy names have dated somewhat.
cheers

I had this book at one time. It was reaaaallly funny the first time I read it (but then, as I recall I'd had a few beers) but not so great on rereading. I threw it out a few years ago because I didn't want my somewhat of a precosious reader daughter finding it in my bookcase and warping her fragile young mind. Same reason I chucked all my Anne Rice "Sleeping Beauty" books (after careful shredding so any dumpster diving children in the neighborhood didn't end up in therapy

I really liked the beginning, but got kind of bored with it later on ... the ending sort of sucked, they could have done that better.
My favorite part isUnicef's long and bitter search for a clean restroom! I actually wrote it out, sort of ... LOL, true Elvish poetry!

There's a new Harry Potter parody by the same company now, it's just as bad.
Disppointing because I've been working on a much better one for a while now.
I say working, I did a few chapters, but I had the rest planned.
I say planned, I have ideas.
I say ideas, just notions really.
I say notions and that's what I mean dammit!:D
