Hi Afro Elf! :) I don't watch trash TV, (of course!) but a while back, when Oprah did a show about what the rest of the world thought of the USA, several middle eastern, muslim types said they watched Jerry Springer (I suppose this is aired purposefully as Anti american propaganda.... Jerry, go dig a hole and bury yourself please) and thought Americans were stupid heathens.(becuase they thought we were a bunch of JS guests) Nice stuff, one reason why $ producers in the entertainment biz should set their standards higher! I know, JD, they just sell what people buy, but you can guide and nudge others in positive directions (I do it all the time as a mom! It's an important effort to keep your nose above the crap level!)

Unlike worthy, highbrow TV, it is not boring.
Seriously, though, it's the opiate of the masses. We've got to have something to distract ourselves of the relentless tedium of our meaningless lives. I know I do.

Never heard of fox and friends, but Jerry Springer.....yuck! Today my sister was watching Jerry Springer and I was in the loungeroom, so I coundn't help listening in and the topic was: I want to marry my daughter. This guy had had sex with his own daughter. That is really sick. It does not make America look good. Why do we have to get all that trash?

Just want to stick this in real quick: Not all people who live or grow up in trailer courts are trailer trash. I'm sure you knew that, but just had to get it out.
My dad met a woman in Mexico who was from Denmark, I think. She was a bit of an airhead but she'd learned English by watching "The Ricky Lake Show". When she told my dad that, he laughed and explained that all of America is NOT like that.
Trash TV is stupid and most of it's fake.

Do you live in a trailer park?
I am not trying to me funny or rude just curious if it was a labeling you may have dealt with.

In regards to the Jerry Springer Show, you can't take it seriously. You know that there aren't that many people who want to marry their daughters or worship the dishwasher or whatever. Jerry was on CNN and said that even he didn't take his show that seriously. Go figure...

I hate JS, it's so annoying, along with Jenny Jones. We shouldn't have to watch people discuss their problem on tv and be encouraged to fight. They should go see a pschiatrist(sp)

I saw Jerry on an interview also and he seem like an intelligent man. I and I do recall him sort slapping his own show.

Jerry Springer does come across as quite intelligent when he appears on UK tv (once interviewed he described his show as "a farce and a circus").
It's a shame that he found fame on that US show, he hosted a couple of one-on-one chat shows here and he did quite a good job with them.......he was charismatic and able to conduct both light-hearted and serious interviews with various celebraties.
If your talking trash tv then I must mention soap-operas......why on earth do people spend so much time watching soaps?
Gods.......nothing ever happens on them:mad: ...... they are the viewing equivalent of watching paint dry:rolleyes:

I'm glad my opinions get around - even if peole disagree. :D I hate the shows too - but like you said I would say - the networks only put out what will sell.
Why was the San Francisco season so much more popular than the London season? Because there was fighting and bickering and back stabbing constantly in SF. People would rather see people fighting and hating each other than getting a long and having fun.
I would include survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, Weakest Leak and all those as trash TV too. Trash TV doesn't just have to be talk shows.
By the way - Jerry Springer was one time mayor of Cincinnati.

Forgot about Big Brother........ye Gods! What is the point of that??!!
Watching ten people sitting around in a house eating, talking and doing bejesus knows what else........has tv taken over our social lives to the point that we think watching other normal people doing perfectly normal stuff is entertainment? .......absolutely bizarre:rolleyes:
I never made a point of watching the Weakest Link (Dunno if that's the same as the Weakest Leak JD) the first one I watched I did kind of enjoy........but it's been the same format ever since:rolleyes:
I wonder if the appeal of trash tv is that it never changes it's format........week after week, month after month....you switch on the TV and know exactly what you are getting from certain shows?

Dunno tho', Weakest Leak has a certain charm........maybe change the show so that the first one Anne Robinson scares to the point of incontinence becomes the first disqualified;)
ok, it's late, going back to bed .................:o

I'd prefer not to say. I'll take the 5th Amendment for $1000 - even if you guys don't have the 5th Amendment. :)

Bigbrother is an odd one i think if you have no life you get into it but if you go out a lot you just dont care. Its bassically for people that dont have better things to do with there time.
jerry springer is quite amuzing from time to time esspecially at 2 in the morning when quite drunk and with ur mates.seriously though all of the people that go on that are quite stupid as is anyone that goes on national tv to confess there problems. But i would prefer to watch ten episodes of jerry than god awful trisha which quite frankly is the worst program ever i just wanna run up and slap that woman

Have you heard the latest one? A bunch of Z-list celebrities are to be shipped off to a colonic irrigation camp for a big brother detox-style fly-on-the-wall fella.
Are they going to put the last of the cocaine on a eyot in the middle of a crocodile-infested swamp? Make them fight to the death for a cameo role in a Daz advert? Oh, to have the job of designing these shows...
Celebrity big brother is a hilarious concept. It's Pop Will Eat Itself all over. Not that I've ever watched it, of course (I tried once, to see what all the fuss was about, and was treated to the sight of some loud-mouthed twat washing his testicles in the shower. Now, call me weird, but that's not my idea of entertainment)
The formula for all this is:
1) massive TV airtime to production cost ratio
2) the sheer voyeuristic spectacle of seeing intimate details of someone else's existence
3) young un/lovelies walking around in their pants and poking each other's bits.
Soaps, confessional chat shows, fly-on-the-wall and these appalling CCTV clip shows all have these elements. Hence we're stuck with it, as long as most people like 2) and 3)

How about I'm a Celebrity, Lock the Door and Throw Away the Key.
Anne Diamond was a breakfast TV presenter in the 80s, and was pretty famous in her day. She went on to do some charity stuff to prevent cot death as a result of her own experience. As usual, though, once a woman in that business hits middle age the jobs suddenly disappear. Though she may have been cr@p all along, I can't remember.

im old enough to rember what she did but really is she a celebrity. People like posh spice and kylie are celebs not hosts of crappy 80's breakfast shows with some bloke called nick.
how about i used to be a celebrity but now i want to get my carrer back on track.
