Do we actually send you applications?

Did you look behind the couch?

Seriously tho'. If 'mooters want to suggest others would you prefer the suggestions through the pm system to stop any on-thread "arguments"?

NM, I hadn't read the anouncement yet.

What is the daily or weekly minimum time committment for being a mod?

What is the average amount of time spent on the 'moot for mods?

Ben
12-01-2002, 10:12 PM
There's no minimum time commitment. If you visit whenever is convenient, that would be fine. Checking in at least daily seems like a good starting point.

Personally, I spend about a 45 minutes to an hour a day on the 'Moot. It takes about half an hour or so to wade through General Messages and then I scan the rest of the board to see if there's something I want to reply to. It probably wouldn't take someone moderating the LotR forums as long as me, since GM is so big.

I like your commitment, Khamul. See how my name is under the moderator column for the Star Wars Forum? I have a confession to make. I haven't even been in that forum for several months!

So what kind of application would convince you to pick that applicant as a mod?

Rían

Oh TC, you naughty thing! ;) Don't even THINK of applying now, you should be doing your science project!! :D (joke!)

what kind of a "application" are we supposed to send you? ("you" meaning Bmilder) Can someone please give me a example?

Khamûl
12-03-2002, 01:00 AM
Check the announcement at the top of the forum. For an example, do it something like this:

Username: Khamûl
First name: Michael
(skipping a bit)
What Entmoot forums do you visit the most? Pretty much all of them, but mainly General Messages and the LotR forums.

Just make sure that you answer all the questions with an asterisk beside them.

Rían

TC - isn't caffeine one of the basic food groups? ;)

I wish I could apply, but I don't have time to do it right now :(
But I promise to obey whoever gets the job :)

Thanks, BoP and Coney! But SGH could still out-prank me, because she's an all-powerful admin, and I'd just be a mod. Maybe I'll apply for bmilder's job if he gets tired of it, then I could REALLY get SGH good - MWAHAHAHA! (hey, my custom title is still intact - whew!) (You know I luv ya, Janet!! :D)

I would apply, but my computer at home doesn't let me on. I can only get on from school.... :(
Anyone know why i'm having this problem?
I log on and it says "Thank you for logging in, Beleg Strongbow", but when I try to do something it says I'm not logged on! If I try to reply to a thread, it just keeps telling me I'm not logged in....

Oh well. Good luck to whoever gets it...

Rían

OMGoodness, Beleg, I just had the EXACT same problem last week. Are there 2 Entmooters using your computer? When my son joined, we got that problem, because we changed the "auto login" to "NO".

Anyway, SGH fixed me all up :D, so why don't you PM her and ask for her help. Good luck!

Oh well. Good luck to whoever gets it... This is the same problem that I fixed for Rian. You need to check and see if I'm on and log in on your home computer and email me at janetlf231@aol.com I can then go into the cp and fix it I think. It sounds like the same problem Rian had after she gave her son an account.

Thanks EXK! So would you!

No, you really didn't miss anything, we were just having fun teasing each other. I was getting a little out-of-hand :D on the "Did they go to the loo?" thread, and SGH had to bop (BoP??)me with her admin stick, and we were just joking about it.

Hey, if you were a mod, you could shoot offenders with virtual arrows instead of bopping with a stick! (I shot last week for the first time in 3 MONTHS! Wonderful! Only 1 more soccer game then back to archery!!!)

This is probably a stupid question to the "elders" but, what is a moderator? I mean, I KNOW what a moderator is. Basic english. But what EXACTLY are their responsibilities?

Ben
12-05-2002, 10:38 PM
Nope we won't make a decision until after the deadline.

Moderators keep order in the forums, and often lead discussions. They can edit out words from posts if they are offensive, close threads so no one can reply to them any more, and delete posts.

I've received 12 complete applications so far, which is a decent amount.

HOBBIT
12-05-2002, 10:40 PM
Good question. A moderator's responsibility is to keep order in his/her assigned forums. They help people out with questions, give assistance, etc. Moderators enforce the rules of the board. They can edit posts, delete posts, delete topics, and close/open topics. Spam and advertising threads are closed. If a topic goes off topic, they direct the discussion back to its orginal topic (they often lead discussions too). If a topic has been created in the incorrect forum, moderators can move it to the correct one.

Thats basically all their duties and responsibilities and powers. I haven't answered that question in a while so I just wrote what came to my mind :d.

Administrators (like me) have more power. They can do all that moderators can, and they also have access to the board control panel. From there we can ban people, make announcments, change layouts, change user options, etc, and tons of other stuff (the CP is so big i still dont know how to use all of it - and tater was never able to figure it out).

Moderators only have power in their assigned forum (unless they are admins or super mods). Super moderators (like Khamul) have all the moderator powers - but in all forums and have no access to the control panel.

edit: grr ben you just had to reply and not let me. :p

Humming bird

Humming Bird, are you a teacher? Lovely name, BTW. :)

It seems like we have a fairly good amount of applicants, don't want to have too many because the staff won't be able to wade through them all, or too few where none of them are good! Well good luck to whoever gets it, you've got you work cut out for you! :)

Hey, BoP you'd make a scary mod! I don't think toe-biting and living in a box is in the mod-description :p

Just a question, are you only appointing one new mod? I thought there used to be two for the books and movies forums. I may be wrong. I tend to forget things when they disappear and remember them differently later.

You are absolutely right that there use to be two mods for those forums and two for the Middle-earth forum. I think when Nolendil left as admin/mod, he was just never replaced and the forums seemed to do ok with just one mod, but they had to be mean guys like CBG and me.:D

I just included myself in that mean remark because CBG and I started the job at the exact same time, but to be honest, he was the real rascal.:D

You are not interfering at all. I think with all the admins and Khamul as a super moderator that Greg who moderates the movie forum will probably have lots of help without adding another mod to that forum. Of course all of this is Ben's call. As for the book forum, as you can see on the main index, there is no assigned moderator at all, and has been that way since CBG left. All the admins and Khamul have been moderating that forum, but once the movie comes out, the other forums will also increase in traffic and will need their assigned mods attention. Like me moderating the Middle-earth forum. I will probably have less time to look in on the LotRs book forum after the movie release.

that's good to think of the rush after TTT comes out. Tolkien Trail is like, the third or fourth down on a yahoo search engine (at least it is on my computer) when the search querey is "lord of the rings" and/or "Tolkien" so the moot might get a good sized Tsunami of newbies.

but i think that it's fun to have new people around. don't you?
