I remember reading that another actor was originally cast to play aragorn but was replaced by Mortensen- does anyone remember who this was?

Stuart Townsend.

Yeah... according to Peter Jackson, the guy seemed right for the part at auditions, but when shooting began and he got into costume and all, Jackson realized that he wasn't right for the part.

wouldnt that suck to get into your costume and stuff and then have the director be like hmmm you look to young get out of here?

i couldnt be bothered reading that Stuart Townsend thing but what i read in Empire was that he was a big fan and about 4 days into it he said he thought he was too young then PJ decided to agree and they ditched him
they had that fella from willow cast for Bilbo and some other chick i forget for Eowyn

Yeah i bet he would be gutted even if he agreed he was too young!! I mean it's the lead role in LOTR!!
I wonder what he would have been like?
I doubt very much he would be as good as Viggo!

I read that Christopher Lee had a feeling years ago that they would do a LOTR film and that he would be cast as Saruman! and he was!!

I just read the artical posted by claudia.(Thanx, it was great!) Stuart Townsend sounds like a sore loser to me. I mean he must have been soooo embarresed to be fired the day before filming, and then they didn't even pay him! But I think he is just being spitful by not going to see either lotr movie. He should be happy that he was chosen in the first place and had the chance to meet such wonderful people. (ex. Peter Jackson, Elija Wood, and Orlando Bloom...ect) I think that Peter Jackson probably should have paid him. If only to prevent hardfeelings. Does anyone know where I can see a picture of Stuart Townsend, especcialy appreciated would be a picture of him in his Aragorn costume... :) :D

Eowyn I dont have a picture of him in Aragorn costume but I do have a website that I JUST looked up http://www.stuarttownsend.org
Be prepared for a fright. Just thank goodness PJ chose Viggo...he is MUCH better suited for Aragorn.
Cheers,
Sam

thank goodness they chose Viggo! He has a much more rugged look than Stuart seems to possess... and as much (or as little) as I know either or them, viggo seems much more gentlemanly.

The Townsend bloke looks more suited for the part of Haldir.

When the movies just started to be made, I got all confused and thought Viggo would be Boromir and Sean Bean would be Aragorn. I wonder how that would have turned out?! :D I tried to think back to previous roles, and it seems that Bean has pretty much only been cast as a baddy -- Janus/006 in Goldeneye, that Irish terrorist in Patriot Games, Boromir... I wonder if he could have pulled it off as Aragorn? Ach, who cares? Viggo does fine.

I am very very very very very very very very very very very very very glad that thye chose Viggo. He is sooo much better looking and probobly better for the part of Aragorn!:)

Interesting. I'm not very well equipped for weighing the looks of Viggo against the looks of Sean Bean. My wife, however, was crestfallen when she (i.e., we) learned that Viggo, rather than Sean Bean, would play Aragorn. She got over it, though! :)

Didnt PJ want Daniel Day Lewis to play aragorn before Stuart Townsend... coz i must admit he would have been an awesome Aragorn aswell... all you need is Hawkeye togrow a beard

They were going to use HIM!?!?
Some how he doesn't seem like Aragorn.

Willow was a fantasy film made in 1988 by Ron Howard and stared Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis as Willow. Had some dubious LoTR elements such as a race of Dwarves called the Elven

In the days before PJ's LoTR Daniel Day Lewis (as he looked in Last of the Mohicans ;) ) was my ideal Aragorn, but Viggo is absolutely perfect! Spooky though dont you think that both Viggo and Daniel D Lewis seem to have the same 'intensity' when it comes to getting in their character.

On the four disc DVD PJ specifically says Stuart Townsend was dropped because he looked too young. I haven't read the article posted yet but I noticed no one mentioned that.

Viggo is the perfect choice for Aragorn, in my opinion. Surprisingly, I thought the casting was excellent all the way around. The only blunder was Cate Blanchett as Galadriel. MMM, they were going for classic beauty but, no offense intended, she isn't exactly as beautiful as I would expect from an elvish queen of her lineage. Sorry Cate! All others were great, though, Even Agent Smith! Er, I mean Elrond Half-Elven. Long live the Dwarves!

Viggo was an excelent choice. It must be hard to be 'let go' because you are too young to play a part... It would be really embarrasing!;)
I thought Cate Blanchet was good! She has that mystical quality about her that makes her elf like. Did anyone ele think it was really cool that she has always wanted elf ears? She says that duringthe extended version of lotr disc 4.... I think. :)

Was who the guy from Titanic? I am asuming you mean Leonardo diCaprio (spelling?) He played Jack in Titanic... but I don't know about Viggo...:) I don't think he was in it, but I really have no clue...

I don't think I would have wanted Stuart Townsend as Aragorn. I'd be like, "Aaa! It's the guy from Queen of the Damned" the entire time.

I think Bruce Boxleitner would have made a good Aragorn, but then I'd be like, "Go Captain Sheridan" (B5) the whole time.

The nice thing about Viggo Mortensen, besides that he's really good as Aragorn, is I've never seen any of his movies before.

I don't think we're talking about Leonardo DiCaprio, if that's what you mean. (If that dude was in LotR, I don't know if I'd even go see it! I can't stand him or Hugh Grant.)

you dont be having a go at Priest Vallons son:mad:
well for one i like Leonardo Di Caprio he is a good actor and he just made a mistake with Titanic he was awesome in Romeo and Juliet and GoNY...
and as for Daniel Day Lewis not many actors can compair to the likes of him in terms of acting and i dont think anyone can say anything bad about him or his career...
mmm i agree that the casting was perfect but id probly say that if DDL did play aragorn anyways so it doesnt really mean much but as for Stuart Townsend now that id be angry about

I also thought that Daniel Day Lewis would have made a great Aragorn. When the cast was first announced, I was dubious of Stewart Townsend. I LOVED all the other cast members and thought most were inspired choices, but I had a sick feeling that the wrong Aragorn would ruin the whole thing. Then it was announced that Townsend was being replaced by Viggo and my concerns went from worried to VERY worried.

But I was wrong. Viggo was perfect and a FAR BETTER choice than Daniel Day Lewis. Both would have been great, but Viggo is not as classically handsome as Lewis and has the exact "look foul and feel fair" quality that Tolkien described. Also, since Viggo is not as well known an actor, he became Aragorn much easier than Lewis would have. Try as we might, we'd have still thought of him as Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans.

I completely agree with ya. Especially about the Bruce Boxleitner thing. However...........
VIGGO MORTENSEN IS DA MAN!!!!!X9999. There is NO ONE ELSE that could have done a better job as Aragorn. He is the One, the Only, the Man.

Age would definitely have been a part in it. As the real Aragorn had some grey hairs, and I think that guy is what? Like in his 20s?

Millane
03-12-2003, 12:04 AM
age definately but a bigger part of it would be acting abilities and both Viggo and DDL are obviously very top actors...
Try as we might, we'd have still thought of him as Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans.
no way, i thought about that before i went and saw GoNY but as Bill the Butcher he looked nothing like Hawkeye and even less as Aragorn... mainly because it has been a few years between movies for DDL and he is ageing... anyways i cant complain Viggo did a perfect job but that they even considered Stuart Townsend us enough to make my stomach turn

Who could have guessed that the redhead loverboy painter in the film (what was the name again?) with Douglas and Paltrow would become Aragorn. He really is good and mature Aragorn (but looks much younger than 89, ha ha), and is my wife's favourite.

Viggo was just the perfect choice (not the first - like Miranda Otto - but the perfect). I mean his looks, his voice. He is Aragorn.
