Richard Harris, who currently plays Professor Dumbledore for the Harry Potter movies, has died. Actor Richard Harris Dies at 72 (http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Entertainment/ap20021025_1718.html)

He was a great actor. He was very good iin Camelot - I liked the version he did on Broadway better than the movie he did with Vanessa Redgrave.

I wonder now what they're going to do about the future HP movies.

I think they are going to use his double, who looks very much like him and is a good actor. I don't know his name though.

I'm not really a big fan of the HP movies or books, so I don't know why I know this.

 Oh man, that is so terrible! Richard Harris was so good at playing Dumbledore, and he made a fine deceased Roman emperor (his small role in Gladiator) I'm going to miss him! :( *sniff sniff*

You know this is the first post I have ever made in this forum. I was shocked. No one can ever sing McArthur Park like he did.:(

I read the report when I saw it online at work. It was sad! My mom suggested that they'll replace him and dedicate the next movie to him. The dedication was a good idea. He was a great actor.

Ye gods!!

Harry Potter is gonna be this great mans Swansong?:( (apologies all you HP fans) this man was a great actor and probs the most publically satirical Irish man since P. O'Toole (he had a great interest in Private Eye Magazine, which Peter founded).

Geez this is the worst final performance since Rowel Junior starred in Mortal Kombat before he popped his clogs:(

Ach well, be some good re-runs on the telly soon of his piccy's (A Man Called Horse immediately springs to mind).

'Bless ya Richard, and we'll raise a glass to ya on the New Year;)

He made his granddaughter happy though by playing Dumbledore and he did make an excellent Dumbledore. Personally - I think he would have made a much better Gandalf than Ian McKellen.

That is so sad. I heard on the radio: "The actor who plays the wizard....." and I thought they meant Ian McKellan had died. I nearly had a heart attack.

That's too bad. I thought I had heard he was sick, but I don't quite remember. I have Camelot. I'll have to watch it as a tribute.:)

Someone had told me that the role might be offered to Christoper Lee, who plays Saruman. I don't know if that's true though, only one of many rumors I'm sure will follow about who will be the replacement.

it would have been nice for them to have a message, but isnt it possible that all the films had already been finished before he died?

Yep, sad news. I'll always remember him from "This Sporting Life", definitely the best rugby league film ever made.

Ok, just about the only rugby league film ever made, but it was still good.

Amazing actor. My favourite Harris role was of course English Bob from Unforgiven, just a classic and unforgettable Western character to whom he brought so much life... he was one of the highlights of Gladiator as Marcus Aurelius... and I thought having him play Dumbledore was an instance of perfect casting.

:( He will be greatly missed by myself and many others. My sympathies are with his family and friends, and especially with the HP cast. May he be blessed...

My local newspaper ran an article on this Friday. Some of the author's suggestions for replacements were Ian holm, Ian McKellen, Cristopher Lee, and Sean Connery, among others. I'll try to find the article and post the whole thing...

I was "pleased" to see that he had a private family+friends funeral........dignity and respect for a man who never saught the glamour and fame usually associated with a man of his talents.

I agree, Richard Harris would have made a better Gandalf than Ian MeKellen. Maybe Ian McKellen should be the next Dumbledore, then, as Galadriel88's local newspaper suggested. A nice parity, that would be.

Carrying on from the rumour thread (http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6615&highlight=Harry+Potter) in the Middle Earth forum that is now closed, it now turns out that Michael Gambon playing Dumbledore is being denied by Warner Brothers. What the?! So it's not Ian, and it's not Michael, then who is it??

Well, anyway, here's the Warner Bros denial of Gambon snagging the part:

http://comingsoon.net/cgi-bin/archive/fullnews.cgi?newsid1041527960,87740,

Guess it's back to rumour mongering. So who are the remaining contenders?

Seems that Gambon got the job afterall-

Somebody might have already said this, but the gut who plays Gandalf in LotR might take Harris' place. Harris was a great actor, though. :(
