I will be a ER doctor and no one can stop me! :p
Sorry. I do want to become an Emergency Medicine physician, because I've always wanted to something health related, and for me, ER work is the most challenging and exciting. I used to volunteer in an Emergency Room and hope to start again soon. It was an experience I could never forget...I was expected to be responsible. The doctors and nurses treated me as a co-worker, not the 14 year old child I was. It was awesome, and I want to be a part of that environment all the time.

So, my second choice... [drumroll] a writer or something along those lines. I've always loved to write and I enjoy the ability to bring others into your world or a world that you have created. I write poetry mainly, but I've written short stories and novellas. (Obviously, not published.) I'll probably never make anything of myself and I'll probably become a BK employee. Oh well.

Yes, Anduril, like you, I'd like to be a hermit if I could do it all over again (in some ways), or a wanderer. Or both. I always wanted to be a self-sufficient farmer.
When I was a kid/ teen, I wanted to be the following things when I grew up:
archeologist
baker
detective
dancer
actress
harpist
writer
filmmaker
forest ranger
psychologist
I also liked anything to do with animals, flower/plants and also the ocean.
Plus I wanted to join the Peace Corps.
And I ended up being an elementary school teacher. I still think about getting an add-on degree and teaching high school English. I think I'd be really interested in a career in neurology if I were more motivated (and younger :) ).

I won't grow up!
I don't want to go to school,
Just to learn to be a parrot (no offence, IP)
and recite a silly rule!
If growing up means it would be
Beneath my dignity to climb a tree
I'll never grow up, never grow up
never grow u-u-up, not me! (not I!) not me.
I won't grow up
I don't want to wear a tie
Or a serious expression
In the middle of July
And if it means I must prepare
To shoulder burdens with a worried air
I'll never grow up, never grow up
Never grow u-u-up, not me (not I) not me, so there

If not for that, I think I might have been a historian. I didn't think History was not all that exciting in school, though I got good grades because I was the one of the only students to pay attention in class. Of course, that changed after reading Tolkien, especially the Sil and *some* of the HoME. When I go traveling to historic sites I find it amazing to stand there and say 'Wow, so-and-so was actually here,' or 'I'm at the very place where this actually happened.'

I'm also considering EMERG as a specialty (well, among other things). Wow, it's pretty rare that you would get a chance to get some real responsibility as a high school hospital volunteer. At my hospital, the ER volunteers just restocked supplies and hardly ever got to talk to the doctors. That's awesome!

Restock shelves?? How boring! I had to clean the exam rooms, wheel patients in, file records, put patient info. on the big board, hold straws for poor old ladies who couldn't do it for themselves, take patients upstairs to be admitted (with nurses' help, of course), take stuff down to the lab...everything. I got to restock shelves, too though.:p
I talked to the nurses more than the doctors, mostly. The doctors were always REALLY busy. I talked to the nurses more. They were so nice! One doctor, though, had read the Silm. and was another Tolkien addict! I was extremely thrilled. It was so wonderful. I also loved the paramedics. No matter how busy they were, they always had time to talk to me. I can't wait to get back in an ER.
Good luck with your goal, Mirrille! What other specialties are you considering?? I used to think I wanted to be a psychiatrist, but the Emergency Room changed my mind.

When I was a little kid I wanted to be:
An Ice Skater
A Missionary
A Gymnast
A Missionary
A coral diver(but not in Florida because there are hammerhead sharks and barracudas)
A Missionary
A Marine Biologist
A Missionary
A Maid in waiting to Queen Elizabeth\bodyguard
A Missionary
Princess of Whales (My Mom talked about the Prince of Wales but I thought Whales as in Marine creatures. I thought there WAS a prince of "Whales")
A Missionary
LOL, I've brought some of that down now. I might consider a mission trip to oh I dunno Brazil or Mexico...but not a full time thing.
My soul dream right now is to be an actress on the big screen. I might move to England to become an actress there. I DO want to live in England after my first child so I can be an author. Then when the nest is empty I'll take acting up again.
So that's my Idea of grownupness

I've still got lots of time to decide, so I'm not set on anything yet. I was thinking of Emergency as my first choice, but I would also be happy doing some kind of surgical specialty. Maybe orthopaedics so something like that. Both are relatively competitive to get into. I used to want to be an OB/GYN, and I'd still like to. Just depends on which residency I can get, any of those would be good. I used to want to do opthalmology, but that was before I knew that it was one of THE hardest residencies to get.
The key thing is that I want something that will give me a good amount of personal patient contact and being able to work with my hands. That's why I was never really interested in things like psychiatry or pathology.
Good luck with your goal too! You are in high school, right? It's such a long road but don't let anyone stop you!

Right now I'm considering Library Science and specializing as a children's librarian. I'm a computer assisstant at my local library, and I love all the exposure to books and different things. If I majored in that I would probably minor in computer technology, since computers are now an intergeral part of libraries everywhere.
That and I would love to be on Broadway one day. It's my fantasy world life to be a Broadway star, and then be a screen actress. :D
Back in real life, ;) I'd also like to write screenplays and television scripts, and I've been interested in journalism for a long time.
Something in the medical field always appealed to me too, but the amount of time one has to spend in college to be a doctor was rather discouraging.
So one never knows. I have a couple of years to decide.

First answer to what I want to be when I grow up: living and healthy and hopefully wealthy!
As for careers, I am thinking about becoming a professional writer, but I've never considered that an easy thing to do. I know of certain people that consider my writing good (and *should* know what they're talking about), but sometimes it's hard for me to have faith in my writing.
Oh, by the way, the wealthy part was a joke, though I wouldn't MIND being rich! ;)

Writer, artist, actress, drummer. I've been told I'm a good writer and I like to write. Artist for the same reason. Actress because I think I would be good at it and drummer, only Eru knows why.

Being a Bouncer is not easy, it takes a lot of self restraint......a boxier on the other hand....only takes discipline;)

I am 13 years old, and I have started studying for A+ and (if minors can take the test) ill be certified in a few months.
My mum, brother, one of my sisters, and my dad all have jobs relating to computers.
Im not so into the programming/software as I am into the hardware, but I know ill end up learning a few programming languages if I am going to have a job with computers..

Artist, wife, director. I'm already an artist, but I'd like to take some courses to get better. I want to get married someday, though I don't know about having kids (not that I don't like them, I just don't want to raise them wrong). I want to direct movies, cuz there's lots of movies I want to see, but I wouldn't trust anybody but me to make them right. Also, I love the whole movie-making process (at least what I've seen of it).

I love the theatre, I love to act and sing. Even memorizing the blocking and lines i miss. I am probably the youngest person on this board, yes I am in the 8th grade. I thought about being a pastor. As a little kid i always wanted to be a singer, but hey, if i'm on broadway, i can sing, dance and act! I was recently in Alice in wonderland, (love jabberwocky and can recite from memory) and the sound of music. I will never listen to edelwiess again. The 'captain' was a jerk. sorry, didn't mean to spill my every being to you, thanx for listening anyway!

When I was little, I wanted to be a wildlife veterinarian. Then, when I hit my teens, it was all about being a movie star; I wanted to be a major film star and director. I got accepted into the A.C.T. in San Francisco - which was a big deal, and that plus my great screen presence and prior high school experience (was Drama Club president; directed & starred in school play yada yada yada) BUT I had no faith in myself, which by the way is a TERRIBLE, terrible mistake to make when one is young & trying to come up in the world. ALWAYS believe in yourself, if you can, no matter WHAT your upbringing might have warped your mind with.
What did you guys want to be when you grew up? Or when you grow up? (This is a bump after 2 years, is why I ask everyone again)

I want to be a novel writer and illustrator, failing that, or as a supplemental career, I'll probably be a psychologist. I think that come time to declare a major I'll choose to double major in Psychology and English with a concentration in creative writing; and maybe, if I decide I can manage the load, a minor in Classics. Oughta be interesting.
Lotesse
12-17-2005, 10:43 PM
that's very cool, to be a novelist! I'd definitely read your novel, Lady M, if and/or when you write one. Studying the Classics as a minor is an excellent idea to that end, too.

I'd like to be an international human rights lawyer or a human rights advocate. Something like that - involving human rights and all that jazz.
Everyone seems to think that just because I got such a high score I'm going to be a doctor. NO. I used to want to, but not anymore.
I want to either be an author, an oceanographist, or I want to go to Loch Ness and find ol' Nessie. So I guess I' wan't to be a Lochnessmonsterstudierandprooveshe'sreal-er. :D

I'll do something in psychology, because it's all I'm good at. I'll work either with criminals (that would be cool, and would entail lots of money), or with high school and college students who could use my good influence at that point in their lives. I already know that I'll most likely wind up a simple professor, since that's what about 90% of people with psych MAs do IIRC. And also that I'll write books for extra cash flow, since I'm a rather good writer.
Hey, Eowyn1! Welcome to Entmoot. :) In a perfect world I would be able to hope for some place as a film writer or director, maybe actor too. But today things are too structured, and that's not something I feel like pursuing. I feel like, I've got the talent, so I shouldn't have to pursue recognition.
Whatever. Most importantly, I want to have done at least ten freaking cool things by the time I'm grown up, among them windsurfing, fighting, and spending a year far away from home very irresponsibly. I'll find contentment easily after earning a couple stories to tell.
BTW, nice bump.

You should read Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey: it describes this same kind of situation. (didn't get past page 13 yet, though, so don't know if it's good reading later on)
