The Three Elven Rings

what are the three elven ring's names and what do they do?

Vilya the Ring of Air, set with a blue stone, worn by Gil-Galad then Elrond.
Nenya the Ring of Adament, white stone, worn by Galadriel.
Narya the Ring of Fire, red stone, Worn by Gil-galad, then Cirdan, then Gandalf.

Their main fuction seem to be to slow or freeze the "fading" of the elves within cetain baound, and to help preserve their kindoms and works. Narya the ring of fire likely aslo had the power of rekindling hope, courage, etc, and help Gandalf do so with Theoden and others. The other two ring likely also had some such thematic powers, but they are not described anywhere.

I thought Vilya was the ring of Water (which explains why Elrond has control of the Bruinen). Adamant is just another word for diamond, I think that Nenya is the ring of Air.

The vilya was the air ring, SP. It's written in the silmarilion, and I think in Lotr and UT too.

I believe Nenya was the Ring of Water.

yes - it called the adament ring too - adament is a type of stone.

Almost every name in Tolkien's works has a meaning in one of his languages...
