I am currently working on a field research project/paper for an anthropology class that explores how people bring Tolkien or Lord of the Rings into their daily lives. I would love feedback from anyone interested...and if you're in the greater boston area, I would really love to get together for a more in-depth discussion. Please contact me at laurdolinsk@hotmail.com!
Thank you!

For one thing, it has taught me to pay close attention to small devices and buttons, like the "close all tags" magical feature (enhanced mode only).

Ah come on guys she needs help. I call the valley and surrounding areas where I live after places in LOTR. I live on the Fields of Cormallen or Gem Valley in southeast Idaho. Soda Springs ID is Mordor because of it's orange glow from the slag dumps. Pocatello is west of the Cormallen fields and so I call it Isengard. Lava Hot Springs is Ithillien (or Rivendell. Depends on what mood I'm in) and Idaho Falls is Minas Tirith. Does anyone else do that and try to figure out where they'd live in LOTR from their surrondings. I also think it's normal for alot of Tolkienites to call themselves their favorite character. I take on the name Sam alot and I add that to my real name. I also think that it's normal to use qoutes from LOTR and what not. Like I call my self a nitwitted ninnyhammered numbskull OR a numbskulled ninnyhammer. I also use qoutes thogh I cant think of one right now.
Hope that helped,
Cheers and good luck
Sam

I constantly find myself quoting LOTR during the day, especially if someone starts saying something that is the beginning of a line in the book (for example, today a marker rolled away from me, and I was saying "Come back, come back", and automatically said [in a whisper] 'to Mordor we will take you).

Hmm...how do I bring it into my daily life...I write in the tengwar. I name things after things. And I quote it a lot too. That's all I can think of. It's kind of a really general question.
Samwise of the shire- I have this forest thing starting in my backyard (actually my brother and I have it divided into about seven forests-the first forest, the second forest, etc.) and one of the dividers between forests is a driveway called Brandy Lane. (There's a wooden sign that says that) and in the forest in that area is a stream that I am convinced is the reincarnation of the Brandywine. So I guess beyond that is Buckland. That's about it unless you count my backyard from when I reenacted book 4. (Shelob's lair, the Anduin/my garden hose, etc. which i mentioned in a different thread)

When ever I journey a long way on foot I imagine I am amoung the fellowship, enduring the hardships of the quest. It always makes my journey seem lighter by comparison and the fantasy is a nice distraction. It is convenient that there are so many terrains in the story, so that one can drop into a part of the story that matches one's environment.

Cirdan! Wow! I do the exact same thing! Except I start mumbling quotes and "new story lines" so if I'm with anyone else, I can't do this. :p
Here are some near- to-home "Middle Earth" places---Wisconsin in the winter makes an EXCELLENT Charadhras. My home (conviently located in a valley) is the Shire. Isengard would be my school, Mordor the west-leading railroad track which I never walk on. Rohan is the field behind the horse barn accross from my neighbor's house. Gondor is my front yard.

That is some front yard you've got there.;)
I haven't been to Wisconsin yet but I like places with a lot of green patures and such. I think I will do the north central on my next trip, whenever that may be.

In daily live, mmmm....
I used to write rune-letters to a friend but she couldn't reply anymore because she didn't have enough time to put into it. On holiday, on a hike through the forrest I often imagine that it used to be Lothlorien once. And how all the elves hide when they hear me stupid mortal come stamping by. :p I try to imagine how they watch from between the trees and I often recite then some of the poems from LOTR. I taught some to my sister and we often walk there side by side, saying each, in turn, one line. I also call my sister ninnyhammer when she annoys me.

I write in Tengwar, write Quenya, and am currently trying to learn Sindarin. I think I actually got interested in languages when my dad read LotR when I was 8 years old

Well if you do come, you'll see PLENTY of pastures. AND cows. Hope you like rocks and lakes!!! Oh...and the only reason my front yard reminds me of Gondor is that I used to (who am I kidding...) Okay, I still DO pretend that I was in Gondor in my yard. It was pretty fun.:D

I call the boiler room of my school Mordor, because it is always so warm and smells like leaking gas ;)

Well, you asked for it!
-Anytime I return from ANYWHERE, I say "well, I'm back" (quote from Sam at the end of ROTK).
-I can relate ANYTHING to LOTR (my friend tested me - I even got to 'locker' before she gave up!)
-I call any large hill Caradhras
-If the phone rings only once, I declare it 'the One Ring'
-I want to name my house Sharkey's End;)
Well, that's all I can think of for now. See ya!
Lanelf.

My friends and I are constantly quoting the books and the movie, but who doesn't? I sometimes find myself wishing certain people get captured by orcs and have their intestines eaten right before their eyes, but, again, who doesn't?

There aren't. I meant snow. There are a lot of hills and bluffs, though, which serves my purpose well! And ALOT of snow. It's cold. And did I mention the quantity of snow?:p
And cheese....but I have to admit...I've actually never seen a mountain of cheese! (I guess I'll have to look into it. :D )

Okay, well like it was said before I like to quote Tolkien,
talk to my teacher about it all of the time,
I named my downstairs room is Bag End (Frodo's and Sam's home, and Bilbo's home. Sam did move their, right?) and my upstairs room is Tirith-Ungle (I think, never pout up the sighn!)
I do that walking thing, where I pretend that I am a Hobbit
Whenever I don't fill like doing anything, my fried gose "now would a hobbit act like that?"
I am scared of Roses, because Sam marryed a hobbit named Rose (look at my name)
And finally and lastly, whene ever I hear sertan nouses, I amediantly relate them to Tolkien.
Oh yes, two more. I change conversations into Tokien talk (ex.
Friend: do you like my new shirt?
Me: Ya, did you ever see my shirt with Strider on it? I have worn it before....)
And I also say Ninnyhammers whenever I get mad at my self, or someone or something else.
That's all, have fun, and tell us your resolts on the grade you get and if you use any of the things we told you (also mention who's) so we know how it turned out. Oh yes, and don't leave us now after getting your info, stay for some converstion and read the books.:)
