All right...I know this is a useless bit of trivia that I will never use, even if anyone even KNOWS, but...

Does anyone know whose hand reached into the "river" to get out the ring? Was it the actor who really plays Gollum? Or maybe PJ's hand sneaking another cameo? Or a member of the crew? Does anyone know this? It bugs me...I don't know why. I guess I think about stupid stuff that makes me wonder...

I'm assuming this: the hand the scooped the Ring out of the river was Deagol's hand, and the hand that was shown holding the Ring was Smeagol's (Gollum) hand.

If the rumors are true Renille PJ and crew are going to put the scene with Smeagol killing Deagol into TTT so I THINK that the hand that got the Ring from the river was Deagol and Smeagols hand was the one holding the ring...like Rana said. I wouldn't fret about it too much...:) Only 77 more days till TTT comes out BTW.
Cheers,
Sam

Well, the hand which snatches the One Ring from the mess of Cheap Plastic Aquarium Plants should be Deagol's, of course. Then, when the hand opens to reveal the ring laying in the palm, THAT hand is Gollum's.

Interesting repreating motif with the hand and the Ring; if you notice, the shot of Frodo's hand opening to reveal the Ring in the palm is the very same shot of Gollum's hand.

Long as we're on hands,
there's something I've been wondering.
Why does Frodo bite his nails?

He's supposedly living a comfortable, well-to-do, pleasant life in the Shire, but he bites his nails to the nub, which people usually only do when they're stressed out . . . is he not really happy in the Shire? Was he traumatized by his parents' death and his move to Bilbo's? Or is it Elijah that has the stressed out life, which I would believe.

Thoughts?

Frodo's stressed out cause his elvish spirit is repressed! :) Also, Gandalf doesn't come round often enough.

What I want to know is...why if that is Smeagol's hand holding the Ring after he kills Deagol then WHY is his hand dirty? Maybe it's Deagol's hand holding the Ring and that "my precious" you here in the background is Smeaol sneaking up on Deagol...but if they are BOTH in the boat when Deagol gets dragged under then HOW is Smeagol gonna sneak up on Deagol when e's back in the boat? Are they gonna drag the boat to shore and Smeagol gets out then sneaks up on Deagol? OR does he sort of move around Deagol's back to look over his shoulder?
I dont think Entlover that Elijah is that stressed out. From what I've heard from my friend (who had the pleasure of meeting him) and what I've read in interviews he seems to be a relaxed easy goin' guy, friendly and outgoing and all that. My big bro chews his nails BAD and HE isn't stressed he just does it out of habit, so I guess that Elijah bites his nails out of a habit too. A strange habit for a hobbit if you ask me.
Cheers,
Sam

I had always assumed that the second shot (of the Ring in Gollum's hand) was long after he took it from Deagol, hence the Gollumish color.

I always like how they made Smeagol or Deagols hand a hobbit hand, not a Gollum like hand.
Regarding Frodo's nails, were they really his hands or did they have a hand double? :) At least they wern't like Sarumans nails. :D

This is fun... anyway, thank you all. I doubt very much that Frodo had a "hand double..." it would be entirely funny, though. Maybe Frodo (Elijah) HAD to cut his nails like that to avoid scratching someone in action scenes...I don't honestly know.
I agree with Olsonm's "time-warp-Smeagol-hand-theory"

But I do have another hand question. Is there special significance that almost ALL the shown hands are at least a little filthy??

Well, thanks for the input.

Regarding Renille's question about dirty hands, I believe they're all grubby because PJ is trying to indicate the realistic nature of the world of Middle Earth, where they build a lot of campfires and don't have a lot of soap and water, kind of like the Middle Ages.

If you've ever gone camping for awhile, you end up looking just like characters in LotR.

Yes, Elijah Wood bites his nails. Bad nervous habit, which I also have. A nasty one, too. Luckily, my nails aren't as short as his, and no, he didn't have a hand double.

Hey, I've gone camping for four days, in the mountains, without a shower and my hair didn't look like Aragorn's! :)

My hair is like Aragorns if I go without a shower for a day! I'd like to volunteer to be Elijah's hand double *cough* ;)

I bite my nails simply when I find them too long and cannot find the nail clippers. :) They get reall short then and it takes a long time for them to grow back out.

Yeah, same here. Although, now that I have braces, it can be quite painful to bite them sometimes, so I have to hunt through the entire house to find a pair of nail clippers.

Well, if Aragorn wore brightly coloured shorts and actually cared about the state of his equipment (that is *camping* equipment you dirty Viggoholics!;)) that would be me on a school camp. Ooh, that one was nasty. I had my hair in the same hairdo for about four days! And I got it wet! And I didn't care!
Also, I think Frodo bites his nail because they probably didn't have nice little nail scissors in the Shire, and have you ever tried to cut your nails with a knife? Don't.

I didn't know Elijah's nail chewing was a nervous habit! I just thought he did it without knowing it...hmmm.

That thought did not even enter my mind *cough, splutter* ;)
