I have still not read the Sil, but yesterday at an antique shop I got a really old copy of the Sil. I've compared it to some copies I saw on eBay, and it appears to be a first edition (american). It has a cool fold-out map in the back. It is hard cover.
I bought it for $5, and it sells for around 3 times what I payed on ebay :D. It's cool.

Cool! I have a first (american) edition copy of Unfinished Tales that I bought at a used bookstore, but I'd rather have the Silmarillion. (or better yet, both) Now I'm jealous.:)

"I got a really old Sil"

*Ahem.*

There is NO "really old" Silmarillion in existence.

I am sure Sister Golden Hair will back me up on this one. ;)

It must be odd reading LOTR in hebrew. I wonder whether I could manage that. Probably not, my vocabulary is way too limited.

I got the '77 edition Sil as a gift a few years ago. It was that that first got me interested in Tolkien. I think its the best edition to have. I love maps; this one has a huge fold out of Beleriand in the back

Black hardcover, The Silm. written in big, red letters, and a round flower(s) in the middle.
On the bottomm it's written Tolkien in white letters...
The flower(s) is white, green, blue and gold, and apparently Luthiens mark/sign.

Hmmm. Yours sounds nicer then mine. Mine is green cloth with a gold symbol. The only writing is on the side of the book. It did have a paper cover on it when I bought it, but that is long gone. Can't even remember what it looked like. Who is yours published by? Mine is Houghton Mifflin.

I never really thought about the age of my copy of Sil (I bought it from a car-boot fair/flea market for 30p!) until I read this thread. It was published 1983!, nearly 20yrs old!.........amazing considering the fact that when I bought it the spine wasn't even cracked! ............it is now tho;)

I'd love to get hold of my own copy of the Sil. I first read a copy from the library, it was hardback with about five of those emblems on it. I want to get hold of a nice copy but the only ones at the book shops are little black paperback ones.
