So Melkor went bad because he wanted all of the power. Why would melkor hide if he is the strongest physicaly over all of them and i thought Eru made the elves look like the aniur. this forum is very helpful! :D

I think Melkor was afraid that the Valar would gang up on him, and so they did. There is power in numbers.

Eru did not make the Elves to look like the Ainur. He made them to be like the Ainur in spirit.

When the Ainur appeared in physical form, they chose to appear similar to the Elves, who were the Children of Illuvatar closest to the hearts of the Valar, rather than the other way round.

"Ther is nothing greater in Arda than the power of Melkor, yet he alone of the Valar knew fear."

Lefty, that's soo true. But even if he knew fear, and he wanted power, then even if he did defeat the Valar, wouldn't he have to deal with Eru himself?? or... sorry if I'm not making sense here...

How did Melkor know fear?
I think that was the problem too

Melkor wanted the Flame Imperrishable that only Eru had. I think that MElkor was the greatest vala but that Tulkas was the strongest of all the vala physically. It does say that Tulkas came and wrestled with Melkor and Melkor has always disliked Tulkas' laughter.

The Elves are like the ainur in spirit but there bodies are made from the earth and can be destroyed.

Why does it say Manwë was most powerful and that Melkor was almost as powerful as him and that was why they were almost like brothers?(or something like that:D)

From the Silmarillion, Houghton Mifflin edition, 1977

Manwe and Melkor were brethren in the thought of Illuvatar. The mightiest of these Ainur who came into the World was in his beginning Melkor; but Manwe is dearest to Iluvatar and understands most clearly his purposes.

Melkor was most powerfull because he was not limmited to use his powers, where as the other valar could only use their powers to a certain degree. This is what i think anyway. Melkor knew that he couldn't take all the valar at once because they would over power him.

Thats very true manafirogh melkor could not defeat the valar alone even if he was the greatest and that is why he alone of them knew fear. The good valar did not know fear becausr they had nothing TO fear.what could Melkor do to all of them??

Plus when melkor took physical form as a dark lord he lost some of his power as hurin said to him.He couldnt go among the people of beleriand anymore and cloud their minds with lies. which in the end caused most damage.
