keltic red hello i need to know does the silmariilion get easier to read when you get further threw it. i'm on chap 4 and im still kind of dazed from the intros:confused:

The Silmarillion in some sens gets easier to read-it becomes a series of linked short (and not so short) tales that tell of the rise of the Elves and the War against Morgoth, followed by the Akallebeth (a summary of the fall of Numenenor) and a summary of the Lord of the Rings. The language gets toned down a bit.

Actually I found the introductory chapters to be the easiest to get through. The silmarillion is a heavy book all the way through. There are parts of it that are a bit easier but only a bit. The best way to read it is to plod straight through it in a daze the first time and then go back and re-read the parts you're the most interested in while skimmin the parts you're not. Plodding straight through will give give you a general idea of what's going on in it and then if you're confused about anything, (which you will be,) you'll know which parts to read in detail in order to get un- confused.

Do whatever it takes to make it easier on yourself. I literally made notes as I was going through, as my memory is a shocker at the best of times. Refer to family trees and notes at the back for helpful and quick access to information. And above all, don't give up! It's well worth the trouble.

I read it aloud! it was the only way to get thru he tough parts. Oh, boy, tho', once you get to the nitty-gritty nugat of Turin, you'll be solidly hooked. :cool:

I never liked reading Turin, I find it oppressive. That doesn't make it bad...but just well done. I preferred the beginning the most.

I agree about Turin. I find it hard to get all the way through that secton.
As to the rest, I still occasionally have to check the index etc for exactly who is who, but it does get better after the first time, and its addictive enough to make you want to read it over and over.

I'm in the middle of the Sil for the first time--the language begs to be read aloud!

If you have made it to chapter 4 then you should have knoe problem getting through the rest, you may have to keep going back to remind your self of who's who as there is so much to take in. But the Sil is well worth finishing and will give you a better insight into the making of Middle Earth
