Has anyone read books by Michael or Jeff Shaara?
(Killer Angels, Gods and Generals, Last Full Measure)

They were required summer reading for my son's upcoming history class. He seemed to enjoy them very much. I believe the movie, "Gettysburg" (or was it a TV special or series?), was based on these books. I haven't read them or seen the movie, but I believe they are quite highly thought of and would be of interest to any Civil War buffs out there. :)

"The Killer Angels" was written by Michael Shaara, his father, and was indeed made into the movie "Gettysburg."

"Gods and Generals," the prequel to "The Killer Angels" and "Last full Measure," the sequel, were both written by Jeff using the same format as his father.

Jeff Shaara also wrote "Rise to Rebellion", about the pre- and early American Revolution. He's currently working on the second book about the American Revolution, which I believe is due to be published shortly.

Reading historical fiction is a bit dicey, because you can easily confuse the history with the fiction. Shaara's books are not only historically very accurate but are also highly entertaining.

I read as much Jeff Shaara as I can. Go for it!

I've listened to a recorded book of The Killer Angels. I really like Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. What was your favorite part?

I really like Chamberlain too....by favorite part was probably Little Round Top. Though I did cry during the end. :(

Historical fiction is different than fantasy, but also good. It has its own magic, in that the things really happened, those people were real, and they had there own sort of quests and adventures that really happened.

But I still prefer Lord of the Rings
