Will you be surprised?

Seems like a lot of people here have been following all the news and rumors and stuff.

I was just wondering, Are you guys avoiding spoilers?

The way I see it, since I already know the story, and the backstories, the biggest things I have to look forward to are 1) the scenery, design and special FX; 2) the interpretation; and 3) seeing PJ direct a large-scale project
Thus, I have been avoiding all the pictures and rumors, etc (except the stuff about casting) so as not to spoil those three big things for myself. How does everyone else feel about spoilers?

I don't see how I will be able to avoid spoilers....and I have already watched the internet preview more times than probably one person should. I am not a big fan of surprises.....ever since I was a kid, I have sneeked peeks at my Christmas presents, now that I am older it is more of a tradition for me.....so by the time this movie actually shows up in theatres I should be pretty familiar with it.

Hmm...maybe there are other people at this board and elsewhere that feel as you do...I will talk to the other admins/mods about maybe making a rule about posting warnings to spoilers.....enjoy your stay, and please feel free to contribute to other forums where spoilers will not be a problem. ;)

I will avoid spoilers as much as I can. That is one lesson I learned while waiting for TPM. I did my best to not read any rumours or other things that revealed too much of the plotline. Well, I enjoyed the movie a lot and I think it was because of how little I knew. Therefore I will from now on avoid spoilers about any movie that I´d like to see. I feel like there´s no point in seeing a movie that I know a lot about.

With TPM I couldn't help myself. It was impossible to own a computer and NOT know the plot of Episode I months in advance :p . As you mentioned, we all pretty much know the plot for LotR, but I am always curious. As long as people have the information, it's difficult for me not to look :p .

It's impossible for me to avoid aspects of that nature, and even if I wanted to I couldn't. I'm not taking these new movies too seriously, so I'm sure I'll be pleased with the outcome since my expectations are low. I suppose it's similar to TPM; the people who thought it would be like the original were all let down, while people like myself who look at Star Wars as fun, but not LIFE, enjoyed it very much. :)

I don't understand why people who don't want spoilers are using the internet. It's the nature of the internet to provide every bit of information it can, and it assumes that's what the user is after. Also, life is short. The more you refrain from knowing out of some sense of surprise is the less you will ultimately know when you pass off. Ignorance is bliss - when you're a kid and you don't know that you don't know. But knowing that you don't know something can be tiring. And making other people make sure you don't know is equally tiring. All I know is that I want to know what I don't know. And there's plety of avenues to enjoy the thrill of authentic discovery, without killing yourself trying to find a forced, artificial sense of discovery, when you knew it was there all along. I think you're being a little unfair. The Internet wasn't created to force information into anyone's hands. It's as polite to warn people about spoilage on the Internet as it is NOT to burst into someone's home and shout out spoilers at the top of your lungs.

Martinez, what other Tolkien itinerary is there for DragonCon, aside from the Xenite schedule? Is that the total Tolkien presense at DragonCon, or are there any other DragonCon-approved tracks? Reason I ask is because the program is built for a rough two-day snapshot, and then repeats. What if someone wants more Tolkien seminar?

If I didn't know the plot already, I wouldn't want to know. But I rather like the sense of discovery as I find out more and more details--in some odd way it makes me feel like I'm part of it. :) And I don't feel that even knowing everything about the movie (which knowledge no mere spoilers can give us) could diminish my enjoyment of the actual experience. It will be so overwhelmingly great that I'll want to see it many times and be awed during each one.

I don't know of any specific content. Brad Dourif will undoubtedly be tagged for some main programming appearances, and I hear a couple of other fan tracks are interested in him, but I don't know which ones.

We're all pretty autonomous, and the reason why I repeat stuff in my schedule is so that people have a chance to see it all while attending other parts of the convention. There is also still a chance we may get other guests (but no one should count on that -- if it happens, it happens). So I would have to shuffle the schedule to accomodate them. There IS a STAR WARS track. I would guess a lot of the people here at Entmoot would be interested in that track.

The Masquerade is a great event if you can get into it. If I hear of anything specific outside my track I'll mention it here.

If i wanted to avoid rumors I wouldn't be here. That may sound harsh, but it's the simplest way to put it.
Also, I think I'll still be surprised at the theatre. Even with short spoiler films we won't see the whole thing before it comes out, so there will be new stuff.

I don't worry about spoilers at all. I posted a question under the book thread which asked how many times have you read LOTR. My guess is that most people here have read it more than once. If so, did reading it the first time spoil it for you the second time? Probably not. As Handshake mentioned in the original post, we are all going to watch the movie for one reason and one reason only... to be entertained. By the scenery, the drama, and the magic of Tolkien coming alive on the big screen.
