This past week, theonering.net posted pics of the new Gollum from the movies. They were quickly taken down because PJ and the crew got mad, because it was a secret. I think they looked pretty neat, but nothing new or different? What did you think? If you didn't get to see them I'll post them here, if that is ok.

welcome to Entmoot OWotF! :)

i saw those picts and i liked´em. Not very original perhaps, but who wants originality? i´ve always imagined Smeagol so...

and those were only non-finished drafts of the wretched creature. Man, i think he´ll look very good, nassstily good i mean ;)

Hmm. I didn't see them.

And I don't know whether I should a) yell "post them! me want see!" or b) yell "no! keep it a secret like it was meant to be!" but I'll let you know when I've decided.

The pics are no longer at TORN......but I have them, if anyone wants to see. I was going to post them, but I too didn't know if it was the right thing to do. I think that is one of the reasons that they were taken down from TORN, and I know that is why AICN never posted them at all. It is up to you if you want to see them. I couldn't help myself so I peeked. Gollum does look......familiar.

It was good, but Gollum looked... dead. He'll be much more impressive if viewed while actually moving, I think ;)

Okay, okay... you all saw it, so now I feel left out :(

Post it, please... I happen to be an impatient person

ditto to that, he does look dead. But I think it works. He looks similar to how I pictured him.

I did some searching as soon as TORN took them down and found them the next day. I think he looks too cartoonish, but that may be fixed when he's colored and textured.

You guys don't seem to understand that those are NOT the finished images. These are intermediate images in the CGI process. They still have a long way to go in producing the final Gollum.

Don't worry. He'll be cool and hobbit-like. Have faith.

The only problem I have with those is that he's naked.
I really hope they aren't stupid enough to make him naked in the movies, which they probably aren't...

He's unfinished. That's not even a naked body your'e looking at. It's an early model for animation. The software has to build up the character in layers. Anyone who has seen the Star Wars Episode I wide screen edition video should know what I'm referring to. They walk the viewer through the process that brought Jar Jar and Watto to life. It was very interesting. People who think this is close to the final Gollum are quite mistaken. This is just a model.

It's an untextured framework, that's all.

FAR from the finished product. But keeping this stage of development in mind I like the direction this is heading.

I think that he looks just like I thought...

When he is finished, he will be a perfect Gollum!!!

he looks OK - but i need to see him moving to really judge. & he'll look a lot better finished, with textures & detail on teh eyes & all the other little touches they haven't doen yet. he's not exactly as i pictured him - the mouth makes him look too chimpanzee-ish & the ears are just a little too pointed (but these might be good things, i haven't seen the finished version & they might work with the rest of him); & he's as "stretched" as he should be. The hand we see is great, i think. the only real problem i have is with the last picture - the bags under his eyes make him look like a pouting kid, which just isn't the right look for gollum. it looks like they're going in the right direction.

addendum to the above:

if i seem overly critical, it's because i'm already annoyed at the Powers that Be - i heard the other day that they cut my favorite minor character from FotR, & i'm wondering exactly how they'll put the best book ever written into 6 (approx.) hours of movie & not destroy it. it'll probably be a great movie, but i'm very protective of the books/fantasies/worlds i love.

I agree, aryne...

And which character are you referring to, Bombadil?

yes... <hiss again>

Those "bags" under his eyes may represent a musculature bulge. You really cannot tell much from these images about what the final Gollum will look like, except he'll probably have pointy ears and will be very thin.

This is a perfect example of how us fans overanalize everything

arynetrek

did you mean "anal-ize" or "analyze"?

either way, it's because i love the books so much that if something doesn't exactly match the moving pictures in my head, i will ^&*#&^$ about it. and if the fans don't overanalyze, who will?

Oops, typo.
These movies won't be perfect, it's impossible to make movies of LOTR that will perfectly match everyones vision of it. I think we should accept these for what they are (unless they stray way too far from the story), someone's interpretation of the books we know and love, not in any way shape or form a perfect visual realization of LOTR.
