I dunno, in the past people just use these countdown threads as an excuse to increase their post count just by posting a single number. I think they are rather pointless anyway, as we will know when it'll be released anyway due to the marketing New Line cinema are said to put into this.
If any single member constantly posts in this thread and is obviously using this thread to increase their post count with little work I shall close this.

No, it'll be too early.

I have broken down and ordered the Special Edition VHS that comes out in November. It's on sale in many places. And no, I'm not buyin a DVD player just for this, my 10 year old VCR is in great shape. I hate being pushed into enhancing my technology just so corporations can make more money.
But of course we have to rent the regular edition when it's out in how many days? 19?

I hate being pushed into enhancing my technology just so corporations can make more money.So......you'd forgo the image and sound (and overall entertainment) enhancements afforded by DVD technology.........to spite big corporations??
Hmmm.....[your] VHS vs DVD....
240 horizontal lines vs 480......
Interlaced vs progressive scan......
Mono sound vs up to 8 channel cd-quality surround sound......
Shorter playback longevity vs longer.......need I go on??
Do you have a black and white TV, by any chance? Did you succumb to the evil propoganda and marketing of those evil evil corporations, and give up your hard-earned cash to them to buy your first TV??
Don't tell me you've purchased a radio! Alas, you fell into their greedy clutches a long time ago.....
Lo! I can sometimes be a little dry. Sorry.
The count-down is on at my house as well!
I warned everyone in my house that as of August 6 nothing but Lord of the Rings will be allowed on the television for a minimun of 5 days and that anyone caught turning it off will be dipped in boiling grease and eaten as hors d'oeuvres!
19 Days left!!!!!!

Grr. No, I have a large color TV. To tell the truth, I've never seen a DVD, so can't judge the difference. (No, I do not live in a cave) The VCR seems adequate -- I'll be able to tell Frodo from Sam.
They just seem to be rushing it a bit. Wait til my first VCR wears out. (But almost thou persuadest me)

Why bother ordering it in advance? Is there any reason why I won't be able to waltz into my local Wal-mart the day it's (super DVD!) released and buy it cheap? Seems like the stores are overly stocked with movies.???
Entlover
07-18-2002, 09:45 PM
Well, I asked myself the same question. And they were having a big sale (30%off) so I thought it would be good to take advantage of that (not being independently wealthy like some people who own DVD players). ;)
Now I know it will come to my mailbox and I won't even have to go after it, and worry about whether my local stores will be out of it etc. I would have liked to get it at Costco where everything is cheaper but they are apparently not even ordering the VHS version.

I see........Well, I give up on trying to controll the influx of "blackware' into the house. The techno lovers just keep carting the strange boxes in, I really don't know what they all do anymore. I was told :) the DVD was really cheap. I've seen them for less than $100. I'm not trying to be a wise a** (like some posters..:D) but you might consider it. Purchase one along with the new FoTR DVD, lump them both together as neccessary purchases, part of mom's Tolkien obsession! We have a whole spare room devoted to out- dated technology tho.........What do you do with all that stuff (SAVE IT! my hubby say's, yuck!)
Course if you wait awhile, the price on DVD's will probably get even cheaper. I remember buying our first VCR when they were new in 82. We paid almost $400 for this huge thing!, Our first microwave was about the same. I thought $400 for a cheese melter and popcorn popper was a bit much. I've since added the bread machine and yucky Foreman grill. :)

Well, I'm getting the DVD free, because Blockbuster is having a promo. Free DVD if you get a prepaid rental card ($25). It'll only cost me $100 for the DVD player I'll now have to buy:p That's why I ended up preordering it. I wasn't going to before then, because it's not as if they won't have enough to sell. I do hate to throw my money to the corporations, too. I mean I don't know how the DVD will enhance the sound and picture on my 20 year old TV.
I am waiting to get a new TV when the price of digital TVs goes down, as is everyone else. But that's not happening quickly enough for the changeover from analog broadcasts, so the gov. is trying to force the prices down. The companies are of course protesting that. Well, so much for my rant.
Yes, I plan to watch the movie at least 3 nights in a row. The first night for the pure enjoyment. The second night I will provide a commentary for my husband on changes made from the book, since he hasn't read the book, and what was left out. I know he's going to be thrilled by this. The third night, well now I forget what the purpose of the third viewing was going to be, aside from finding the little mistakes people have talked about (the car, etc). Maybe I'll invite some people over (off the streets, please, anyone come in and watch this with me so I have another excuse to watch it :D).

I'm buying the VHS from rogers cuz i'll be able to afford it ($16 yay!! wow i'm poor...) and cuz they'll give me 7 free 7 day rentals if i do! muhhahaa!! not that there will be anything worth renting once i OWN fotr

Amen. Luckily, both the DVD and VHS coming out in November will have the extra half hour. You have to decide on other bases - like whether you want to buy a DVD player, and figure out how to hook both VCR and DVD up to your TV without going nuts, or throw away your VCR which seems silly because it works perfectly well . . .I want both . . . we'll see.
"Not that there will be anything worth renting once I OWN FoTR."
That is a problem, I noticed that when I was in the midst of going to FotR frequently, I had no urge whatsoever so see anything else. (that was a 3 or 4 month period!) I still havent seen A Beautiful Mind.

My mom can be so cool sometimes.:D She said "We are buying the 1st edition DVD as a good, classic addition to our video library. But we can still buy you the 2nd editon as a birthday or christmas present." I wasn't sure I had heard correctly. But I did. :)
We just got a DVD player for free with our new car. It was a pretty good deal!:D

Wow. Everyone is waiting to buy the Special Edition one that comes out in November. Am I the only one planning on buying both? Actually, I'm pretty lucky, I'm getting the eighty-dollar one for a present since it comes out 3 days before my 19 birthday. Unfortunately though, that means I want get it until the 21.

Hmm, the Fellowship of the Ring DVD is popping up earlier than August 6, folks. Take a look you can now order it not only from play.com, but at LVS too. Only Region 1 is available, and they state that this is an early release and the price may come down on the date it is released:

I was weighing up the Pro's and Con's of buying the first edition DvD now or just rent it a few times and wait for the Director's Cut version later. Whilst I was still procrastinating, my other and better half took up the Blockbuster Deal, so now I shall chew my nails no longer with the anxiety that such choices cause us consumers!
I still use my VHS every day, and play the DvD's on my Playstation 2 - so why buy a second DvD unit anyway? Can't wait for the EA Games Lord of the Rings game for PS2 and other consoles to be released ... whenever! *Mental note: Must talk other and better half into pre-ordering game....*

Hmmm....I will be purchasing a 74cm Flatscreen TV in a couple weeks time, but....
...when I score the Special Edition DVD, I'll steal my company's video projector - up to 7.5m (diagonal) display. I will thus be chuffed.

i did pe order the dvd b/c it was $23 pluss i got ten free movie rentls at Blockbuster, any movie or dvd, new or old, but not any game or equipment rentls. plus, i have to pay for my movie rentles and for the lord of the rings movie (or any other movie that i wont) so, it is a very good dill for me!

what??? they are already sending them at amazon? thats cool. bit i'm also not getting the august 6th release. i'm gonna rent it, and but the extended version. i wish i could buy both, but unfortunately, i can't. but thats ok i guess. the only problem is that from what i've heard the extended version is only coming out on widescreen. i know some people like that better, but since we don't have that special tv it only ends up making the picture smaller. in my opinion its worse. oh well though, for all the special footage i think i can live through it!!! lol.

i know what the extras are gonna be for the november dvd. they are in empire well at least some are.
- the shire sequence is going to be greatlly exteded including a voice over by bilbo 'concering hobbits' and pippin will sing.
- Aragorn will be given a fleshed out back story, including him visiting his mother grave in rivendale and he will sing elvish.
- council of elrond extended with gandalf speak in the dar tounge of mordor and more confrountations with borimir.
- In moria the battle with the cave troll exteded with Aragorn saving Borimirs life.
- Lothlorien is much longer, including more of haldirs complaints over gimli, celeborn, and the famos gift giving sequence with galadriel. her swan boat makes its apperance.
- Gollum as the log with eyes
- the battle with Lurtz and the Uruk-hai has small sceans re inserted. that gives it more zip  . for example lurtz pulls the dagger from his leg and licks the blood away.
i also think think that it looks like the fellowship will be chaced though lorien as i have seen pics of this.

One week! I bought my dvd player last night. I just bought the cheapie one at Wal-Mart since I'm poor, and I figured we'll be getting a new TV in a couple of years anyway with a built in player. I already warned my husband that he wouldn't be watching Tuesday night fights next week (at our house, anyway).

5 more days!!! :D We just ordered a new sound system to go with our new dvd player. The only reason we got a dvd player is for lotr! And then I'm not really sure why but for some weird technical reason our old sound thing didn't work very well with the dvd player, so we got a new one. I am having a bunch of friends over the to watch lotr!! its gonna be great I can't wait!! After all I only got to seeit 4 times in theaters and once on this pay per view type thing at a hotel. Gosh I wanted to go see it all the time!!!!. But my parents wouldn't let me :( oh well, when I'll get to see it again soon!!!
samwiselvr2008
08-01-2002, 11:28 PM
i bought my dvd player back in i think april just for LOTR! and i bought a tv to go in my room, so that when i am half way through the movie, and for some reson, even though i have seen the movie 13 times in the theater, and have read the book three times, but somehow, i will slip away like i do not know what will happen and my heart will be pounding as some ugly lady named arwen apers on the screen with a sord and then...
JENNIFER!!! I WONT TO WACH TV! THAT IS THE MILLIONS TIME THAT U HAVE SEEN THAT MOVIE AND YOU HAVE IT FOR EVER, LET ME WACH TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and then i would have been kicked out of the movie and get in a fight with my older sister, so it was only smart to buy my own tv! plus, my sister would have taken and hidden the dvd from me, so that her and her tv would be able to have pease together. then i wouldn't be able to do anything about it b/c i hid her Shreck movie when she was driving me crazy with it!
but know, she will have no reason to do that!
