Not trying to spoil the fun, (sorry incase you already knew) Sith are taken from their parents like Jedi are. Maul's family wasn't evil.

I'm not so sure:

After all, there can be only one apprentice at a time, and so it's more of an exclusive position than that of jedi padawan. I really don't know if the sith would stoop to kidnapping-it wouldn't be terribly efficient, would it?

Perhaps maul went through a situation more like Anakin/Vader did?
