View Full Version : Guess The Song Game

Imladris
05-18-2002, 09:15 AM
A song quote game, Soomebody gives a quote froma song, afew lines or so, somebody guesses which song its from, if right, original quote giver verifies and the quote answerer turns into the quote giver.

I'll begin,
"...And all the peo-ple that come and go---- stop and say----'hello'. ..."

Can you guess it?
After three incorrect guesses I'll give a hint, after a further three, the answer and a new quote.

Lizra

Well, it IS an oldie, and here is the clue:

The song is composed by someone who has made it quite big in the movie composing industry....

Lizra
05-28-2002, 08:09 AM
Hmmm, Danny Elfman?(Oingo Boingo) Nah, that doesn't sound like him, I don't watch movies! I am/know oldies only.Come on somebody else, step up! Oh, Randy Newman?

BeardofPants

I just downloaded the Meddle album recently (great album! :)), and I had to give it a quick listen before I could narrow it down to Echoes. :o (Hence the edit)

azalea

How about an easy one?

"The killer awoke before dawn. He put his boots on and he walked on down the hall"

BeardofPants
07-25-2002, 10:35 PM
Sorry, Azalea, wrong song, wrong group! :) And yours is The End by the Doors.

Later edit: I checked out those lyrics btw, and they're *very* close, but there's a subtle word difference b/n the stones song, and the one I'm after. Didn't mean for it to be a trick question! :D

azalea
07-25-2002, 10:40 PM
WHAT!? Oh, well, sorry for jumping the gun on that one. Hmm, not Leaving on a Jet Plane by Peter Paul and Mary? Don't have any other guesses.

Edit in answer to your edit: Yes, now that I think about it, I remember that it's something like " Take me to the airport and put me on a plane."

Yes, it's Barenaked Ladies, but you have to name that tune!
I like all kinds of music, from old folk tunes to swing to blues to regae to classical to rock to showtunes to irish pub songs, and everything else you can think of. I think there is excellent music in all the genres and I love broadening my horizons with all the different types of music this amazingly diverse world has.
As for the Barenaked Ladies song, any song that mentions Kurasawa gets points from me. I like that song because it is clever, and pure fun.

Stake my place in the singles bar.
Face to face, toe to toe
Heart to heart as we hit the floor

A british band of the 70s/80s

Next hint: The first thing you hear on this song (that did recieve radio airplay!) are foot steps walking. Also, these GUYS are extremely cool, (as in swank and sophisticated).

Radagast The Brown

Lizra, could you give more hint?

Lizra
09-16-2002, 04:52 PM
The Band's name has two words, they have a sax player.

OK, That one must be too obscure :) Try this:

Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
Take away everything

But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth.........

Okay, try this for size:

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend

Lonely as I am, together we cry

I was kind of stuck between something very easy and total obscurity. And for a bonus point, who covered it?

Khamûl

That's "Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't know if they originally did it, or just covered it, but that's the version I'm familiar with.

Since BoP never posted one, I'll go. This one is probably pretty obscure:

Trouble will not wreck my life
Someday you'll like what I'm putting down

azalea

Hm. I guess it was a little too obscure. Time Was by Canned Heat.

I'll open the floor to whoever wants to post a lyric.

How sweet it is to be loved by you.......James Taylor? Is that the title or you the line?

Dussander
11-03-2002, 01:09 AM
Lizra,
How Sweet it is to be loved by you. - James Taylor is correct!

Perhaps I made that to easy? (ponders)

Lizra
11-03-2002, 01:20 AM
Better too easy than too hard! It's more fun to have lots of answers instead of a big DUH? This game is tough because of the different ages.

Since, since we've been together,
loving you forever,
is what I need......
Let me be the one you come running to'
I'll never be untrue

Tina Turner- Lets stay together

(or atleast one of the people who sang that...Eternal, and Al Green and someone else)????????????????????????

Lizra
11-03-2002, 01:39 AM
Well, you got the song right, but AL GREEN did it originally! I just love him, oooh! I have all his albums. :)

Your song quote.

This is probably way to easy but.

"West Virginia, Mountain mama."

TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROAD, JOHN DENVER!!

Lizra
11-04-2002, 11:20 PM
(Lizra tries to remeber the lyrics out of THE BLUE)

Blue Ridge Mountains, Shanendoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees
younger than the______ blowin in the breeze

Trees and breeze are a guess?? I have a feeling I could rewrite this song from memory, all wrong! :D

azalea

Lizra
11-05-2002, 10:05 PM
I could hear those lyrics with a Hendrix style delivery!

azalea
11-05-2002, 10:25 PM
Hey, I could, too! Too bad he didn't live longer -- he could have done a version of it. :) Didn't he have a song or album with gypsy in the title?

Maybe I shouldn't have capitalized the word "gypsy" in the lyric. It seems to be a little misleading. It's NOT the person's name. It's what the singer is calling the character in the song.

Dussander
11-05-2002, 10:32 PM
Oh, I see.
Mine was just a shot in the dark anyway. It had Gypsy.

azalea
11-06-2002, 01:16 PM
I'll give a hint, then if no one guesses I'll give the answer.

The genre of music is "Southern rock," and the band member who wrote the song said in concert that this is the best song he ever wrote.

Lizra
11-06-2002, 08:46 PM
Oh! I never did cotton much to that Southern Rock! :) (except the Allman Bros) So...whozit? Lynyrd Skynyrd? Marshall Tucker Band? Charlie Daniels Band? Was Kansas Southern Rock? Headeast? I can't think of any others. What defined Southern Rock, besides "good ole hippie boys"! The long jam? At LEAST 2 lead guitars (dueling in the long jam)? A song with the word Boogie in it, on every album, hmmm, what else. Oh yeah, the guys always had long hair, well into the eighties, but NO hair spray! Sorry for rambling on! :)

azalea
11-07-2002, 08:24 AM
Actually, the lyrics are from a song by The Allman Brothers Band: Melissa. Why don't you go ahead since you mentioned them in your post?

Lizra
11-07-2002, 08:41 AM
Ha! Very funny! It' was the band I liked! :) OK !

I like to dream, yes, yes
right between the sound machine
On a cloud of sound, I drift in the night
Anyplace it goes is right
Goes far, flies near
To the stars away from here.

Ok! A band from Texas....

I would walk ten miles on my hands and knees
Ain't no doubt about it baby It's you I aim to please
I'd wrestle with a lion and a grizzley bear
It's my life baby, but I don't care.

Hint: The band is named after a car.
Hmmmm, this one might be too Tuff! (that'a another hint!)

Lizra
11-09-2002, 12:13 AM
I'll leave the above song open for extra credit! :D
Let's try this....

Maybe someday, You'll see my face among the crowd

Maybe someday' I'll share your little distant cloud

Hasty Ent
11-09-2002, 01:34 AM
is the band from Texas ZZ Top?

Lizra
11-09-2002, 01:47 AM
Which song Hasty Ent. I really don't think either one was in Last Waltz. The extra credit one (cobra snake for a necktie would fit right in it! probably the blues roots) is newer than that, the Motown one, nah! :) In the extra credit one, the lead guitarist had a brother who was greatly admired for his open ended, rockin blues guitar. Unfortunately he died way too young in a plane crash! (mega hints :D )

No, not ZZ Top, a car is in the name.....

Hasty Ent

Hasty Ent
11-09-2002, 12:18 PM

Oh NO!!!! I was right! :D, Now I've got to come up with more Lyrics! I'm playing this game on Xenite General topics also. It's getting tuff (ha ha) The hardest part is picking the lyrics! Not the guess. Lou Reed always has those drug/rush references. How about "Metal Machine Music"! Nice lyrics on that one! heehee. Give me a little while, and I'll give a clue.

Lizra

Darn, I would have got that socks bit in a second! For awhile there, the Chili Pepper "Behind the Music" was a weekly feature on VH1! Enough already! :) Let's see, Best buds in high school make a "mystical" connection on stage, wear tube socks on private parts, mom laughs, groupie drinks underwear sweat, the fools in the band discover heroin, death, strung out, success and money keep coming anyway, the drugged fools finally figure out they are rich rock guys, in the lap of luxury, and live their life the real way. Enough already! (sorry) :)

Dag! Ha! Ok, off the top of my head...

Our love is like a ship on the ocean, we'll go sailing with a cargo full of....Love and Devotion!

Lizra
12-13-2002, 07:28 AM
Who hoa! Not bad, considering where you were in 1975! (or was that 76?) :D It's The Hues Corporation, I believe! :)
Then the next "dawn of disco" hit seemed like that one where that guy sang "Woman, take me in your arms, rock me baby....with that catchy little guitar riff. Anyone wanna do "The Bump"?
Pick a good one BoP!

BeardofPants
12-13-2002, 03:38 PM
