My first was Air Supply at Six Flags over GA in 1982.
My last one was Greg Allman at the Roxy in Atlanta.
My favorites are every Grateful Dead I went to.
Weirdest -- Iron Maiden @ the Fox Theater in Atl. (they cancelled the first night half an hour after the show was to have started, and the next night we saw them, but if you saw the inside of the Fox theater you'd know why it was a weird place to see Iron Maiden).
Worst -- Steve Miller band -- there was a big thunderstorm and we were seeing it at an outdoor amphitheater.
One of my dad's friends worked on an early computer program for selling tickets, so we used to get floor seats for every concert (1980s).

First - David Cassidy at the Forum in Montreal (no laughing!, I was young)
Last - Just saw the Moody Blues 2 weeks ago at the Casino in Rama.
Weirdest - Alice Cooper's Welcome to my Nightmare
Funniest - Erasure (1980's dance band) had a very entertaining stage show.
Favorites - Tragically Hip
- Moody Blues
- The Pogues
Worst - Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie ( Same bill). Bowie played all new stuff that I wasn't familiar with and NIN had so much stage fog going on , it was hard to see if they were really on stage.
I will be seeing Meatloaf next month. Even though I live in the boonies (so to speak), we have a world class casino in Rama - just outside of town. Recently they've been getting a few baby boomer nostalgia bands. Kind of nice to see them in a relatively small venue (~2000) with a fairly relaxed crowd. At the other end of the spectrum is Edgefest, a 2 day Alternative concert event is held in Barrie every year. Nickelback is headlining this year ( some of the other bands are - Silver Chair, Default, Tea Party, Finger 11, Simple Plan) Its only 20 min away, and lots of fun. I've gone in previous years, a rougher crowd, but still a good time.

OK, It's hard to remember!
first...Alice Cooper-1st tour when I'm 18 was new (before the snake and the guillotine, those were great on subsequent shows :) )
Last...Dwight Yokum-Time after Time
Favorites...Roxy Music-Siren, all the Springsteens, Bob Marley
Weirdest...Bowie-He came west as a Diamond Dog, (maybe it was that Station to Station set??, It was an elaborate "city structure, with him riding out in a cherry picker bucket!?) then back east as a Young American (blank stage, just black back up singers, everyone dressed retro twenties swank, standing in a line being oh so cool. all glitter gone, except on the goofy fans!)
Funniest...Parliment/funkadelic (Bootsey was in his giant diaper!)
Worst...The Dead (sorry!) fell asleep, McCoy Tyner, fell asleep again, the really stinky ones you can leave and hopefully forget!
Wished I seen...The Clash and that ChiliPeppers one in 81 when I had to work. I've forgotten so much, you know!

First: The first one I remember was Ricky Van Shelton in around '89 or '90. I was about 5.:)
Last: Atlantafest '00 with Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day, and some others.
Favorite: Atlantafest. I don't really remember very many.
Heck, just fill in the rest of them as Atlantafest. It's really the only live concert that I strongly remember.

I've been to a lot. But mostly against my will, lol.
I dont't even remember some of the names currently.
Steve and edie - against will
Judy Cuhn
a dozen other old dudes that my parents liked. they arent that bad, they can sing but i am not interested in the songs that they are sining. So I naturally would not care to remember the names of all the ppls concerts that I have been to. I could name a whole list of people, but I dont quite remember who i've seen live.
I only remember Judy Cuhn and Steve and Edie because they were the WORST live concerts that I have ever been to.
Stever and Edie: My dad is a fan, I dont really like them. at all. we went to atlantic city to see them. ben got poop dropped on him by a seagull. buffet wasn't all that great. I couldn't go into any of the casinos. WORST OF ALL: we only got to hear the opening song. We literally got kicked out of the theatre. You know how there are different degrees of tickets? We didn't have the super-duper tickets but we also did not pay the 'elcheapo' tickets. We got put in the nose-bleed section. We were talking to the people sitting at the table with us and discovered that they had paid about $20 less on their tickets. So we asked to be moved to a better table. We were. Then during the first song, some people came by with an atendant claiming that they had 'reserved' seats and that this was table such and such and their ticket said so, which it didn't. There were no reserved tables. But we got kicked out. There were no tables left (big place too..old people like to listen to Steve and Edie i guess). They were rude and literally kicked us out. Made us get up and leave. I think we got our money back.
Judy Cuhn: She didn't sing any of the songs that I liked from her (les miz would have been good, disney songs). She sang what she wanted, which were all boring songs. She has a nice voice though. Reason why this will stick in my mind: We went to see it in NYC, when we arrived home at a flooded house. While we were away seeing smelly ol Judy Cuhn an upstairs toliet turned itself on and literally flooded the whole house (second floor, first floor, basement). What a fun experience, eh?
GOOD CONCERT
I only went to one concert that I can think of off the top of my head: Weird Al Yankovic (sp? I think that is spelled right).
He does great parodies. The Weird Al band is by far my favorite out of the horrible popular music of today (well, I dont like it). The parodies of popular songs are 10X better than the originals. I haven't listened to any of his songs in several months, but he is still my favorite and his songs are still funny. I went to one of his "running with scissors (is that how you spell it?)" tour. It was in Morristown NJ. A town that was only about an hour or so away from me. Greg (gdl96) went to a Weird Al concert of the same tour a couple months before me.
It was great.

You mean Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme(sp)? Whoo! That might be interesting. Sometimes really bad can be good. ( Like Elrond in the movie) They are really getting up there. Doesn't sound like a fun night tho!

Yup thats who I mean. They are really old now. My parents recently went to one of their concerts and Edie is so old that she is forgetting the words to songs. They can't really sing now any more either. Their music is ok - just too old for me. :p I have no idea why my dad likes them. Yup Steave Lawrence and Edie Gorme. Sorry for not saying their last names. I foolishly assumed that everyone would know what I was talking about. :p Well, somebody knew what I was talking about anyways.....

Hi Snowdog, Thanks for answering the old thread. Elvet told me many mooters are too young to do live concerts! Duh! Why didn't I think of that.:) I'm thinking the 77 Zep was the one I saw, The time seems right. Why was it weird. I remember it being in a huge venue, (which is yucky ,of course) and Robert Plant's voice not being on, he couldn't hit any high notes. Page was fine tho! Cause I live in the midwest, It seemed like Aerosmith played everywhere 2nd or 3rd bill for a couple of years there. It was yawn! What is 77's Nov 1999?

I saw Aerosmith in '86 with Ted Nugent. Aerosmith were all in their drug haze at that point, but I still thought it was a good concert, we were front row. Ted Nugent got really mad because some guy threw a full cup of beer at him and cussed the guy out.
I'm pretty sure I also saw the Permanent Vacation tour, but I can't quite rememberif that was me or my husband that saw it.
(:( to losing memory).
Hey, Snowdog, is your name a reference to the old Rush song? I also saw Rush's Power Windows concert. That was a really good show.

Front row is good! I worked in a record store throughout the 70's so we always got comps to all the concerts we sold tickets to . If it wasn't "festival"seating those seats were often good. Sometime it makes a big difference. Front row at Bruce Springsteen concerts is my idea of a good time!

I was wondering where to put my first post cause I know you all like it for people to start posting in established threads...so here I am..
I'm also glad to see people people here who are close to me in age...
Oh...the memories of David Cassidy and The Dead and Led Zeplin...
The most memorable concert I've been to was to the Tibetan Freedom Concert in 98 in DC and I saw Live...Dave Matthews...Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters (that's when the lightning struck!) and a bunch of other people....we managed to sneak around where the celebs were and Michael Stipe waved at me...and a very nice security guard asked us to leave...very politely...
The last concert I went to was R.E.M. in 99. Very good....even if the don't have their orignal drummer anymore...

Hi Dream Wanderer, welcome, and it's nice to meet you!

first: Kenny Marks (haven't ever heard of the guy after, like 1993)
Last: Amy Shreve (celtic)
Favorites: Newsboys, Third day and The Waiting (hey, any concert where you fill two 15 passenger vans with your youth group and drive from far away is going to be a memory)
Across the Tracks (local band)
Susan Ashton (my church brought her in, and my friends and I got to work backstage)
Weirdest: The night Rich Mullins died, I was at a Clay Crosse/Jaci Velasquez concert
Funnest: The aforementioned newsboys concert (or maybe that ancient Hokus Pick concert--they opened for DCTalk.)
haha you can tell that I was a christian concert junkie--no one but g88 and Emplynx will recognize any of those names

Hi Achoo! I went to a Texas Jam, it might have been a year or two later. I remember it was really hot (of course), and long, I think Heart played. I guess VH means Van Halen? A flock of Seagulls, ha! That was some hair, and a hilarious video too! My husband loves Merle also.

First and best ever: I Muvrini's open air concert in Porti Vecchiu on Corsica. Maaaaarvelous!
Worst: I Muvrini in the AB in Brussels. The concert was wonderfull! We were sitting on the 4th row! Woohoo! The bad thing came the next day in school. My teacher accountancy came over me in the middle of the lesson and asked: "Well how was it yesterday night?" Me not quite getting what he was getting at asked: "How yesterday night?" "Well I Muvrini" and then my brilliant answer: "Oh were you there too?" "Yes" He said "I was sitting 2 rows behind you!" I smacked my head then.

Hi Snowdog, Thanks for answering the old thread. Elvet told me many mooters are too young to do live concerts! Duh! Why didn't I think of that. I'm thinking the 77 Zep was the one I saw, The time seems right. Why was it weird. Cause I live in the midwest, It seemed like Aerosmith played everywhere 2nd or 3rd bill for a couple of years there. It was yawn! What is 77's Nov 1999?Lizra, thanks for reminding me of this forum! Being away for weeks isn't conducive to seeing all the few threads I have posted to and any answers there may have been.
The 77s (http://www.77s.com) are a great rock band who have been around in one form or another since 1982. Love them, and if they are ever in town again I will be there. They did allow us to videotape the concert in November 1999, and so I have that memory preserved.
Many of the mooters may be too young to have gone to a concert, or a real one anyways (a real band= at least a drummer, bassplayer, guitarist, vocalist... no canned music tracks with only singers/dancers ;)) So what if many are too young... then they dont need to reply to the thread! ;) Thanks for this thread Lizra!
I too saw Led Zep in 1977 in the now defunct Seattle Kingdome, and it was the craziest one I can remember. The place was one giant party and the acoustics of the cement dome were terrible, for which they turned up the volume to compensate and drown out the echo. Musicly it was terrible, but memorable just the same.
I was an Aerosmith fan back in high school, and when a friend of mine went on a roadtrip in his 1968 Mercury Cougar, we had 3 cassettes.. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic, Led Zeppelin I, and Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run. We did get sick of them after the third or forth cycle. We couldn't borrow any tapes from our friends because cassettes were few and far between, with 8-tracks being the popular choice of format. I have a 1976 Ford with a stock 8-tracvk player in it, and about a half-dozen tapes... they do sound good except for that annoying track-change in the middle of a song... sorry, I digress... anyway, after seeing that terrible Aerosmith show, I basicly quit being a fan and buying their records.
Today I would like to go see many of the old acts that are touring, but to come up with $100 a seat is a little beyond what I an willing to spend. Ah yes... the $5, 3-hour concert... such memories! :D :D

I'm afraid I can't remember any dates, but this was all so long ago...and my mind was altered during most of them.:o
I stay away from all stadium concerts now, (and most rock concerts) -- too loud, and you can't see anything, and way too many people.
First -- either Grateful Dead or Yes, not sure
Last -- David Bowie, over ten years ago
Favorite -- a triple bill: The A's, followed by The Cramps with the Talking Heads as headliners (following the release of their debut album
Roy Orbison a few years before he died
Snakefinger a few years before he died
Weirdest -- The Residents -- but it was also one of the best and certainly a favorite -- whatever happened to them? I loved all the Ralph Records artists.
Funniest -- Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers -- another great concert, the humor was in his absolutely BRILLIANT lyrics!

Well, Thanks for the reply, Snowdog! :) I see LOTS of 8tracks at garage sales! They can't give them away! :D Hasty Ent, I remember one of my earliest concerts was seeing Yes (what was the album before Fragil? Yessongs??) in 1971 or 2, at the Coliseum at the Indpls. fairgrounds. It was so exciting. When they did "I've Seen All Good People" (or whatever that song was called!) some super long haired freaky guy ran out to the front of the stage (from the crowd) waving his walking stick around, all us budding heads and freaks went wild, ah youth!! :) I was talking about The Cramps with someone else a few weeks ago. They were a hoot! Not really that talented, but great attitude, (as was with many punkish, new wave bands). I remember the girl was Poison Ivy, what was that skanky singer's stage name?? I saw Talking Heads twice at Bogarts in Cinncy, now there was a new wave band that was HEAVY on talent! Didn't need that much attitude! I wouldn't go to a show now, except.... Springsteen, Junior Brown, BR549, or Brian Setzer, in small clubs! (I don't want too much, do I :) ) What bands would get you guys off the couch?
Snowdog
10-02-2002, 09:41 PM
this was all so long ago...and my mind was altered during most of them Um yes... here too.... though I can actually remember things is in itself a miracle. Also, I do attend some small club shows now and then, and a set of foam earplugs turns the volume down just about the right amount.
All the gatrage sales I go to have some 8-tracks, but are usually serious country or crap comedy...
Hasty Ent
10-02-2002, 10:32 PM
Good grief Lizra -- I'm so impressed you remember these dates/places! What would get me off the couch now? Maybe Lou Reed -- I love his music and never saw him live. BUT - it would have to be a smaller venue with relatively inexpensive tickets.
Snowdog, I can't imagine wearing ear plugs at a concert...but you're right. They are so loud now it's physically painful. Why? Why? Why? The concerts of my youth (ah youth...) were plenty loud, but they didn't make my ears feel like they were bleeding, for pete's sake.

Well, well, well, a thread for oldies like me. Did someone mention the Cramps? I think they get my award for Weirdest Act I saw on stage, also Most Likely to Have Sex With Each Other (or On Their Own) During a Set. The singer was called Lux Interior.
The best was Frank Zappa, in his last tour, 89 I think it was. Also pretty weird because the audience was full of people who had tried, and failed, to grow a FZ-style moustache, but clearly no-one had had the heart to tell them.
Also up there: BB King, 88; Radiohead 95 (the height of their powers); Pigbag, 82.
Worst: Jethro Tull, 82. Really diabolical dinosaur rock by that time. Also Runrig, about the same time. Yawn.
Do DJ sets count as gigs? Or are we too old for that sort of thing?
I bow in homage to the person who saw Led Zep in 69. I wonder if we can collect a full set of cultural landmarks? Are there any here who saw the Ramones in 76/7? Stone Roses 87/8?
Lizra

Hi Dunadan! What fun, another oldy who talks music. :) Lux Interior! No wonder I couldn't remember him. (Aaack!) He was a groveling slime bag, wasn't he! Hee hee!...Hey! My old alias was Liz Ramone! I've seen them a good 6 or 7 times, can't even tell you everywhere, years would probably be in 77 thru 80 range.....the last time was in Bloomington IN, when my husband's band opened for them (Whee!) I think that would have been 1980. Someone stole Deedee's (?) leather jacket and also all my hubby's rockabilly stage clothes.. bummer! Their shows were fun, and pretty much all the same...ONE TWO THREE FOUR...BEAT ON THE BRAT, BEAT ON THE BRAT, BEAT ON THE BRAT WITH A BASEBALL BAT, OH YEAH, OH YEAH YEAH. ( rest in peace Joey) :) Now Frank Zappa was never one I could go for, Dinah Mo Hum and the Dental Floss song were funny, but the jazz noise stylings of his band hurt my ears! I like the thought of all those bad FZ moustaches though! :D Snowdog, I wear foam earplugs every night, and definately would at a show. They are great. I'm lucky I haven't lost any hearing, considering all the live music I endured, My hubby isn't so lucky, he is/was a musician, and turned it up too loud for too long. How about those shows were your seat would be in front of the sound system in a certain way that would make your breast bone rattle  Dunadan, I've never experienced the DJ mix, got too old, what's that like?

Oh my god, two heroes in one thread. Lizra, you rock, and your husband too. Me and my mates spent most of the 80s wishing it was the 70s and trying to get all those New Romantics to stop preening themselves and get a life.
Frank is a god, but it takes a lot of listening to get into him; I think the genius is in the timing and composition. Oh, and they're pretty good musicians... Uncle Meat is one of the top 5 albums in the world for sure.
IMHO, by far the greatest creativity in pop music in the past 10 years has been in dance music. I went to an awesome set a couple of weeks ago by Mr Scruff; you can hear some stuff of his totally excellent Trouser Jazz album on www.ninjatune.net. Very groovy. For a sad old punk like me, it's a familiar experience, where going to a gig means jumping around like a looney for hours.
I'm lucky, in that my colleagues keep me right on what's hot in the dance scene. Hopefully when the bairn gets a bit older he can point me in the right direction (though no doubt he'll be into Death Metal or some such nonsense).
salut!

How about those shows were your seat would be in front of the sound system in a certain way that would make your breast bone rattle. Ah yes... except we had open floor in the Seattle Coleseum so we could crush up against the stage.. it was called 'festival seating' and if you wanted to sit.. you could anywhare around the place.
I do have a serious case of tinnitus in my right ear with a midrange loss which makes voice frequencys seem far away compared to background noise. I think the loud music had some to do with it, but moreso when at Led Zep 1977 an M-80 firecracker that was thrown went off not too far from my head on that side and my head rang for weeks.
I had the chance to see the Ramones in Seattle at a Rising Star concert, but didn't go. :(
On my Led Zeppelin 1969 show... it was my first ever concert, which was part of the Gold Creek Pop Festival. I didn't know any of the bands that played, like Vanilla Fudge, and Hot Tuna, or Led Zeppelin... I was 11 and went with my 16 year old neighbor who had just got his driver license. Of course the drugs and edbauchery all around me was interesting though I was still innocent and took not part in it. I was blown away by the high-power sets Led Zep played, and I was up near the stage! They played all of Zep 1, much of Zep 2 which wasn't released yet, and a load of covers and Yardbirds songs! It was about 3 hours as the band scheduled after them wouldn't play because they didn't want to follow such a high powered group. Another band scheduled didn't show up, so the Zep played so long! They othewr bands that played?? I dont remember much of them.

Ha ha! The New Romantic era was about when I "grew up", MTV came on then and kind of took the fun out of live music. I think the new romantic style was bigger in the UK than USA. The NR look was a little too much like dressing up like a pirate on Halloween :D US guys couldn't go for that, it seemed too "gay". (Why didn't the New York Dolls seem gay? I guess you had to have that "ugly" punk element thrown in. New Romantic was too serious and pretty) I did have a white heavily ruffled poet shirt, but that's as far as it went. I liked Adam Ant and Duran Duran.

First: Aerosmith with my dad in 8th grade (wow, five years ago already!)
Latest: Tonight I'm going to see Disturbed!! Woo!
Favorite: Ozzfest 2002. Ill Nino, lostprophets, Adema, Drowning Pool (two days before the lead singer died), Zack Wylde's Black Label Society, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, and the Ozzman himself! Hell yeah!
I also love Summerfest here in Milwaukee. It's every summer around end of June/ beginning of July for about a week. They have all sorts of great new & local bands on over a dozen stages, and at night you can see some great nationally known bands (Creed, Paul Simon, The Violent Femmes, Dave Matthews, Destiny's Child, The Moody Blues, and more than I can remember).

The Moody Blues! I think it was mid 70's & the early 80's I saw them! one of the cleanest sounding shows I had been to, along with Emerson, Lake, & Palmer in 1974 and Yes in 1984! The Yes show was where Chris Sqire's bass would nearly compress the breath right out of me!

I noticed there isn't a category for best stage show, so I hope no one objects if I add one.
For me it would have to be Rammstein. I had only heard two of their songs before I saw them last year, but the stage act totally blew me away! Heavy drums, strong vocals (even if I don't understand them at all), a guy in a lab coat, and PYROTECHNICS like you wouldn't believe! Just awesome!
The only other band that comes close would be Slipknot, with their masks and jumpsuits and whatnot. I loved it when the lead drummer's platform rose up and started spinning and tipping. I saw them at the same show with Rammstein and System of a Down. Needless to say, that was a great show.

Rammstein!? I remember a US air force base called Ramstein, in West Germany....Anyway, I wonder how their stage show rates with KISS (heavy deep voice!).. This is going to really sound stupid, but when we took our big girl to see NSYNC two years ago, well the stage show was pretty awesome! Hee hee. :D
Snowdog

Well, all that Slipknot has done has been done elsewhere before. The revolving and lifting drumkit was done by Rush in the late 70's/early 80's, and Kiss had the makeup and such with the outfits... also in the 70's.
I like Rammstein though I haven't seen them live, and I doubt I will with the cost of concert tickets these days.

I am so jealous, it is my dream to see Paul McCartney, since I can't go and see John or George. :(
I was going to see an Oasis concert, but then they cancelled to tour for some reason, so I have never been to a concert.

I might go- if my friends are up for it then sure!!! Maybe I'll see you there- there's rumour that they'll do the Astoria again soon and I'm always hauting that place so come along- I'm the one propping up the bar with a drag queen next to me (one of my mates- Benji) and a vodka and lemonade in my hand!!! I have to say though in the world of Bohemia Blue are a bit on the outside- give us Aerosmith any day though and you are talking PARTY!!!!!! Mx

Best concert I've seen: Neil Young
Best recent show: The Dismemberment Plan in June; it was their last tour and they took requests for the whole show. Very fun.
