These are a series of storys by Henry Kutner...using the pseudonym of Lewis Padget, about an inventor named Gallegher, who could only invent things when he was drunk! The problem was, he would come off his "binge", find some contraption he'd invented, but not know "what it's for, or how it works"! :D
The first story "The Proud Robot" he wakes up with a hangover, to find a robot he had made, but the robot would not listen to him, until he figured out it's (prime directive). The robot would talk, and talk, and talk. One day, Gallegher got upset with it and said "SHUT UP AND GO OPEN ME A BEER"! The robot, went and got a beer for him, and opened it...he had invented...you guessed it...a bottle opener! The robot is with him for all of the rest of the stories, and they are all extremely funny...but the inventions are really cool!
These stories are "way out of print" I lost my book, a long time ago...Found some places on line, that had them, but they wanted $99 and up for the hardcovers  and this (http://www.rebookonlinebooks.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=6484&CLSN_199=1019528004d766827dc96518b2bd300b) paperback edition, which I also used too have until l lent it to a jerk!
