hey, anyone else love the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas?? (W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, originally performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company) my personal favorites are the Pirates of Penzance, or the Slave of Duty; H.M.S. Pinafore, or the Lass who loved a Sailor; and the Mikado, or the Town of Titipu. i am also a pseudo-expert on the patter-songs. (The Major-General song, John Wellington Wells, the Nightmare Song, etc). other people have favorites?

I like the music from the Pirates of Penzance and the Mikado, haven't heard much of the others. I've been trying to find "We are Gentlemen of Japan" (not sure what it's called), but had a very hard time. I ike that song.

i think it's called "If you want to know who we are" and it's the second piece in Mikado (the first being the overture). you can find it in a score of the Mikado, which you can find in almost any music store, and most record stores have CDs of most of the G&S operettas. :)

so i'm guessing that nobody else is a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan...oh well. it was worth a shot. :)

I wouldn't call myself a fan: I like them, but I don't know much about them. I think the Mikado is my favourite... did you ever see Topsy Turvy?

no, sorry. :(
the Mikado is really cool - did you know that a lot of places use the "sit in solemn silence" song for tongue twisters?
"and you sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark, dock
in a pestilential prison with a lifelong lock
awaiting the sensation of a short sharp shock
from a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block."

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
i've information vegetable animal and mineral
i know the kings of England and i quote the fights historical,
from Marathon to Waterloo in order categorical!...etc.
i won't bore you with the rest of the song, but now i am happy! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

phew, only just found this thread. right *claps hands together* where shall we start? let me see. i love the major general song, tee hee. i had to see the pirates of penzance twice, because the first time i went to see it, one of the pirates was really gorgeous, and i couldnt' concentrate on the songs. ooops! oh well, at least i got to see it again. i also love the mikado, i have it on CD. i will post again with some more lyrics soon.

ok, i will occasionally post some lyrics to G&S songs, they will naturally be from the song(s) that i have stuck in my head day by day. the object of the game is to name the song, singer (that is, character), and operetta. we'll start with today's:
"The sun whose rays are all ablaze with ever-living glory,
Does not deny his majesty he scorns to tell a story
He won't exclaim "I blush for shame" so kindly be indulgent
But fierce and bold in fiery gold he glories all effulgent.
I mean to rule the earth as he the sky,
We really know our worth, the sun and I
I mean to rule the earth as he the sky we really know our worth,
The sun and I...."
and:
"Oh better far to live and die,
Under the brave black flag I fly
Than play a sanctimonious part,
With a pirate head and a pirate heart....."
toodles! :)

isn't anyone going to guess the songs? if not, i can just tell you the answer. :)
TinuvielChild
05-07-2002, 08:59 PM
k, assuming nobody's guessing:
the first one is from the Mikado, and it is The Sun Whose Rays are all Ablaze, sung by Yum-Yum (soprano).
the second one is from the Pirates of Penzance, and it is the Pirate King's Song, sung by the Pirate King (baritone).

OK, OK, OK - I couldn't resist coming here.
With Cat-like tread *STOMP* our silent way we feel *STOMP*
(forgot next line)
NO sound at all *STOMP!* we never speak a word! *STOMP*
A fly's footfall would be distincttttttt-ly heard!
Come, men, who plough the sea,
Truce to navigation, take another station,
Let's vary piracy
With a little burglary!!!!
(OH - just thought of Bilbo with that last line!)
TC - this is getting scary - are we long-lost twins or something? (wait, wasn't that a G&S .... oh, no, just babies swapped at birth)
I mean, ballet, tengwar, C.S. Lewis, G&S. Good grief! What excellent taste we have! :D
(I probably got a few words wrong in that song, it's been years! It sure is funny, though. I must rent the Mikado soon, never seen it.)

THAT is cool!!!!! "I am the very model of a hero in Lord of the Rings"....We love you, IP! :D :D
Yeah, Rian, I was thinking that earlier.
"A rolicking band of pirates we,
Who, tired of tossing on the sea,
Are trying their hand at a burglary,
With weapons grim and gory!
Hush hush! I hear them on the mannnnor poaching!
With stealthy steps the pirates arrrre aproaching!
We are not coming for plate or gold,
A story General Stanley told,
We seeeek a penalty fifty-fold,
For General Stanley's stoooory!"
