It was a French comic book, but in the early '90s they did do a cartoon of them on TV.

So if anyone else does like them, which was your favorite? Mine are The Black Island, The Seven Crystal Balls, and The Secret of the Unicorn.

Who's Tintin, never heard of him.

azalea

It is a French comic about a young reporter who solves mysteries. (They are translated into English).

TwirlingString

O are they still in print?

galadriel
04-16-2002, 07:47 PM
I know that they're still in print in French; my French teacher has some of the books.

It was a cartoon too; I think they were once on TV here in the US (dubbed, and many, many years ago).

TwirlingString

Not french (insert high scream) I'm taking it. Oh well, it'll probably get me extra cred.

azalea
04-16-2002, 07:53 PM
I'm sure they're still in print. Most big book stores will have them or at least order them for you.

TwirlingString

Thanx for the tip, I'll go find them!:D :p anyone else notice that the sticks out tounge looks more like a cutesy embarrassed grin?

WHAT!!!!????
FRENCH!!!!!???!!!!IEIEIEIEIEIE!!!!!!*screams in rage*
NOOOOOOO BLOODY WAY!!!!!!!

I would turn around in my grave if I had one!

Tintin (Kuifje) IS SO NOT FRENCH!

IT'S BELGIAN people! Belgian!

And French fries aren't French either by the way but that's unrelated...

azalea
04-17-2002, 06:33 PM
Oops! sorry about that! I just knew them in English, and I assumed Herge was French (bu come to think of it, I may have known he was Belgian many years ago). Is that why it's pronounced Tonton instead of Tantan?

BeardofPants
04-17-2002, 06:52 PM
Yes, Herge was Belgian, with slightly Nazi'ish views, last time I heard.

Great comics though. My favourite one is of course, red rackham's treasure. Although, I like the secret of the unicorn, and that one about aliens, (flight 714).

Tintin rocks! And cap'in Haddock, of course!

azalea

I guess it's kind of like making the mistake of getting on Entmoot and saying LotR was written by PJ. We need to give the right country credit for doing something we like!

Uck, now you've done it, you've killed me. We try to get our own identity for 150 years and they still think we're some race of native indians speaking some weird french dialect (this was actually the conclusion of a survey what Americans knew of Belgium a couple of years ago. Imagine  )

You're right BoP, he slightly had that kind of views, that's why one of his albums was only very recently released because it wasn't deemed suitable then.

Tintin is the French name and the name used in every other translation.

I don't blame you, Belgium is easily overlooked and a large part of it IS Frenchspeaking. I just thought I'd rectify it. Sorry for screaming.:o

I quite understand -- it's like walking into a Canadian bar and saying that "Canada's just part of the United States anyway" or something like that.

Hey, how do you pronounce Kuifje?

Earniel
04-18-2002, 03:33 PM
Thanks for understanding *gives Azalea a virtual smartie*
The pronounciation of Kuifje, oh this is going to be a tough one getting it in phonetically English....This is the closest I can get: the 'ui' is pronounced as the 'u' in run but a bit more stretched, like 2 twice as long in sound. The 'j' is like the 'y' is 'yes' and the 'e' is very short like a cough the 'e' in 'trek'. The 'k' and 'f' are pronounced as in English. How does that sound?:)

azalea
04-18-2002, 04:52 PM
Mmmm, thanks!

Well, I am trying the pronunciation -- and of course everyone looks at me as if I've lost my mind! But thanks, it gives me an idea of it at least!:)

i LOVE Tintin!!! i don't have a favorite, i love them all! but i think the secret of the unicorn and red rackham's treasure, and one of the later ones, i forget which. wow. *sigh* nostalgia...see i used to read those about 4 years ago, loooong time to a teenager. :p

TwirlingString
04-20-2002, 03:45 PM
TinuvielChild if you have them, let ME borrow them. Oh yeah, don't forget to bring Small Gods to school Tuesday.

TinuvielChild
04-21-2002, 07:37 PM
k. i have the Shooting Star, the Black Gold (or something like that, i quite forget), ummmm the secret of the unicorn, red rackham's treasure, flight 714 or whatever it's called, and 2 others. i haven't looked at them in 2 years so please forgive me for mutilating the titles. and of course i won't forget Small Gods.

TinuvielChild
04-21-2002, 07:40 PM
oh and i don't think you can get extra credit with them in French class, as a) they're not in French, b) they're originally Belgian, and c) they are completely non-France-related (in fact i think many of them take place in England). *shrug* :)

Lady of Darkness
04-23-2002, 03:47 PM
I've read most of 'em. Where can you buy them anyway? I've looked everywhere and can't find them. oh well, I find my sister and bribe her to hand over her stash of TinTin books. Ever since I "forgot" to give her back one of them, she won't let me read them. *whimper* *whimper*:( :( :( :( :D :D :) ;) :p

I don't know if you have one there on the border of Mordor ;) , but I think Border's books and music has them, or can order them.

Lady of Darkness
04-24-2002, 03:39 PM
good idea. we do have a Border's out here, but everythings' in Orcish ;) . And I'm certainly NOT taking up orcish just for the sake of books. (no offense) I would be insulting my race!! Besides, it's much more fun to call them names w/ a smile in your face and a sweet tone so they think that you're complementing them!:D :D :)

TinuvielChild

I now have a little background onfo on Herge and the development of Tintin. I've just finished re reading the whole series of comics (excluding Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo). I love those comics, it's too bad he didn't write even more.

To clarify about Herge's persecution for nazi-ism: although he was never politically involved, since he had worked for a Nazi approved newspaper during Belgium's occupation, he was banned and arrested 4 times but never went to trial. He was always released within hours of being arrested.
