My dad (who's in the restaurant business) read in a Restaurant News Magazine that Burger King has a struck a deal with whomever and are going to make toys based on the Fellowship of the Ring movie, if the first movie does well (gee, I wonder how it's going to do), they'll do toys for the other two.
This is just sad, and cheapening. We're in for battle-mode Legolases, shooting plastic arrows at little green goblins, and hack&slash Gimlis with kung-fu Khazad whacks. Oh well.
Perisil
06-23-2001, 09:09 PM
Well just a warning to them they better make the Balrog with the detachable wings option or else all hells gonna break out of the likes of wich has never been seen .
Hey by the way my dads in the restaraunt biz to where does your dad work?

Come on guys lighten up, the toys would hopefully be loads of fun. It will maybe cheapen the books for others, but for those who really like the books it shouldn't make a difference.
I agree on detachable wings though, if only we could bring Tolkien back to life then we could solve the second greatest question, "Do Balrogs have wings?". The first is unknown, but the answer is 42.

I didn't say it would cheapen the books, you can't do that. It cheapens the idea. When you start selling toys at Burger King, less serious respect and wonder is in the movies, and given to the Lord of the Rings as a whole. I don't mean less respect and wonder can be gotten from the books because of it.
Also from what I've read and seen little kids (who will enjoy happy meal toys probably more than older collectors) shouldn't see the movie. Too terrifying and un-kiddish. The battles* aren't Braveheartish, but they're still bloody, nasty battles, the Orcs are absolutely revolting and The Balrog is demonically terrible, I heard someone screamed at a private showing when the Nazgul were riding across the screen. Long term nightmare material. Should this be marketed to children?
Perisil, my dad works at a place called Mimi's Cafe.
*Come to think of it there's no large scale battles in the first movie, however.
Perisil
06-24-2001, 06:04 AM
Wowie! Mimis Cafe my dad works there too what a small world, whats his name maybe my dad knows him.
And I think i am being pretty light here im only kiddin around i dont realy care if they make toys at all it doesnt bother me any. And the movie is definatly not for kids in my opinnion i mean Shelob c'mon like i said before kids who intend on seeing that should bring a extra pair of undys cause theres gonna be some major pants creamage.

Know what would be funny? McDonalds having a Balrog toy with wings, and Burger King having one without, then they'd fight each other in ads saying that the other isn't true enough to the stories!

I can't say that I'm shocked by all of this. After all, fast food toys are a simple fact of life for a sure hit movie and with so many LOTR fans willing show up in theaters just to be sure that the story isn't to badly butchered how could the movie be anything but a hit.

Anyways, I thought it was only gonna be McD that had the figures in the Happy Meals? I don't want Happy Meals, Sad, Depressing Meals would be more up my lane, but I might have to buy some just to get the bloody figures... They should sell them without a "Happy" Meal, for half the price or something... I'm almost willing to pay full price for it, as long as I don't have to get the "Happy" Meal... Hmm... buy a couple, throw away the food, take the figures, go home and play with them?

Happy Meal toys are too breakable, but you know what's gonna be worse? The COMMERCIALS eesshh, you know those really tacky coms where this guy with this really deep voice comes on the television while these little boys are playing with these cars that turn into these power heroes and then they say something that make your eyebrows go passed your hair line?
Yeah imagine THOSE.This little toy Aragorn on Weathertop with this flaming brand(plasitc of course) then there's this Nazgul. You push a little button on Aragorns back he throws the firebrand and then you push another little button on the Nazguls back and FWOOOM he bursts into flame. Now THAT is enought to give me nightmares Brrrr.Or what if they come out with Arwen Barbies?Oh my goodness I think my Bunny slippers just ran for cover.

Burger King does *not* have better food. I have been to Burger King twice in the last year and both times (both at different locations) I have gotten hair in my burger.
Anyhow, I actually had a bad dream about a Lord of the Rings "Onion Rings" tie in a week before the news broke. It was scary seeing that same "Lord of the Onion Rings" as a headline.

Tolkien himself refered to the creature having wings. Yes, he did. When he first describes the creature, he refers to them as a shadow or darkness like wings. Then on the next page he flat out refers to them as wings. Not "like" wings, his wings. Reread that part of the book.
Anyone know exactly when the burger king promotions will start?

No idea but I wont be stepping one fooot inside Burger King after it begins. I mean some little kid on TV zooming Frodo across the table or having him chop at a Nazgul is going to make me sick:b. I dont think Balrogs had wings, the way Howe paints his Balrogs is totally amazing(cant say that for the Hobbits.*winces*)but the wings looks like a skimpy bats or something like that and what would be the use of wings if you could'nt use em so why have them if you cant? Just my view of things. Sam

I'm going to buy every single Kid's Meal it takes for me to have EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!! Making the movies cheapen it. Making the cartoons cheapens it. Heck, illustrating the movie cheapens it. Everything cheapens it! If you want to be negative. I don't. I like the illustrations of Middle-Earth. I like the idea of the movies being made. I hate the cartoons. I will buy the Kid's Meals, the action figures, and any merchandise that looks cool. Besides, this merger isn't simply to cash in, its to help keep New Line from going broke before the movies get released. Somebody's got to pay for this expensive set of films. Tesseract12, I like you name. Someone's Madeline L'Engle is showing. Is that how you spell you name? It's been awhile since I read her books. I read most of the Wrinkle in Time books.

I read an article in the newspaper a few days ago, talking about this. Apparently, if there is any action-figure merchandise created, it will be at least half-decent. Because LOTR has such a big following, they have to at least try and make the merchandise appeal to the fans -- so it can't just be stupid and shiny.
Personally, I agree with that.

my Tolkien-fan mother has already threatened me with a light-up Arwen goblet for Xmas if i'm bad...
and that burger poster is just despicable.
i'd be OK with the idea of LotR toys, "collectible figures," or anything else if i was sure they'd do a good job on them - but too many times i've seen the bad things they do to Star Wars characters when making them into toys. (my high school's SF club used to have contests for who could find the worst-looking, worst-represented SW toy - i think the TOTALLY out-of-proportion Boba Fett from a Happy Meal during the rereleases of IV-VI won once...)
it's hard enough to think of those dear Hobbits & Men & Elves as being ONSCREEN, i can't handle the idea of them as toys yet.
<speech style="Wednesday Addams"> Boromir burgers? are they made from real Gondorim? </speech>
whoever (Renille?) suggested T-shirts, that IMO would be a better way of accomplishing the inevitable merchandising. i'd wear a Gandalf shirt!
besides, the toys seem like a ploy to get little kids into the movie - they're obviously (based on rating) not meant for little kids. IMO if you're not old enough to enjoy the book, don't see the movie. and not just for the terrifying scenes (kids are more resilient than Society gives them credit for)
how ironic - a light-up goblet commercial is playing as i write this...
and i think at 5'0 (& 19 years old), i could compete for "Shortest on the Board"
