When Morgoth first began to build forces, before the elves awoke, he had a Fortress called Utumno which was far to the north of Beleriand. He later built Angband and had Sauron hold it. After hios imprisonment, destruction of the tree and theft of the Silmarils he went to Angband and raised Thangorodrim over it. Why didn't he keep Utumno as an extra defense? Then he could have escaped to there after the great battle. And, was Utumno completely abandoned?

Although not all of its pits were laid bare.
